Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to metabolic disorders related to insulin resistance and decreased pancreatic ?-cell secretion function. The high prevalence of DM, which continues to increase every year, indicates the need for comprehensive treatment to prevent complications. One non-pharmacological approach that can be used to help control blood glucose levels is autogenic relaxation therapy. This study used a case study design with a qualitative descriptive approach to explore in depth the phenomenon of changes in blood glucose levels in a patient with Type 2 DM. The research subject was one patient residing in Cokro Hamlet, Sukoanyar Village, with inclusion criteria including Type 2 DM patients, GDS >200, not consuming DM drugs or certain drugs, able to communicate, and willing to be a respondent. Primary data were obtained through interviews, observation of physical and psychological conditions, and blood glucose tests using a glucometer. Secondary data were obtained through patient health documentation, daily treatment records, and family statements. The research process was conducted in three stages, namely orientation, the working phase with the implementation of autogenic relaxation therapy in several sessions, and termination through subjective and objective evaluations. The results showed a decrease in blood glucose levels from 345 mg/dL to 216 mg/dL (a difference of 129 mg/dL) after the intervention, accompanied by improvements in physical and emotional complaints in the form of improved sleep quality, reduced fatigue, and decreased anxiety. These findings indicate that autogenic relaxation therapy can be an effective non-pharmacological intervention in helping to control blood glucose levels in patients with Type 2 DM.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease that causes global health problems in society. The International Diabetes Federation predicts that the prevalence of diabetes worldwide will increase to 853 million by 2050. The increase in the number of diabetes patients is due to unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as lack of physical activity. Therefore, interventions such as foot exercises and warm water baths are needed to help control blood glucose levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a combination of foot exercises and warm water baths in reducing blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. The study design used a descriptive case study. The sample size was n=2 people, conducted from May 25, 2025, to May 27, 2025, in the Sukoanyar Village RT 03/RW 03 area, Pakis District, Malang City. The results of this study showed that after three consecutive days of intervention, there was a decrease in blood glucose levels in both research subjects. In Mrs. S, the initial GDS level of 360 mg/dl decreased to 240 mg/dl after the third day of intervention. Meanwhile, in Mr. D, the initial GDS level of 349 mg/dl decreased to 220 mg/dl after the same intervention. Thus, the combination therapy intervention of foot exercises and foot soaking in warm water can lower blood glucose levels in diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract

Abstract

Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder with a high prevalence that often leads to complications and reduced quality of life. Management of T2DM requires not only pharmacological therapy but also complementary non-pharmacological interventions such as Benson’s relaxation technique, which may lower blood glucose levels through physiological and psychological mechanisms. This case study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of Benson’s relaxation in reducing blood glucose levels in an elderly patient with T2DM. The subject was a 70-year-old woman residing in Cokro Hamlet, Sukoanyar Village, Pakis District, Malang Regency. The intervention was conducted over three consecutive days, with each session lasting 20 minutes. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and measurement of random blood glucose (RBG) before and after each intervention. The results showed a gradual reduction in blood glucose levels, from 462 mg/dL (pre) to 440 mg/dL (post) on day one, 325 mg/dL to 301 mg/dL on day two, and 164 mg/dL to 146 mg/dL on day three. The patient also reported reduced fatigue, decreased tingling, improved sleep quality, and a greater sense of calm after undergoing the therapy. These findings indicate that Benson’s relaxation is a simple, safe, cost-effective, and feasible complementary intervention that can be practiced independently by patients and families at home, supporting holistic management of T2DM.

Abstract

Gastritis is characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dull epigastric pain, upper abdominal discomfort, early satiety, and loss of appetite. Some patients also report dizziness and neck discomfort. Without proper treatment, gastritis may progress to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), causing severe symptoms such as chest pain, heartburn, and sleep disturbances, which can significantly reduce productivity. Gastritis commonly affects individuals in their productive years, including students, due to irregular eating patterns, poor sleep quality, and high stress levels. This study aims to identify the dominant risk factors contributing to gastritis among nursing students. The research of an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. A total of 107 students were purposive sampling technique based on inclusion criteria: being active nursing students with a history of gastritis. Data were collected using dietary patterns questionnaires, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS), and gastritis symptoms questionnaires. Data were analyzed using chi-square and logistic regression with a significance level of p<0.05. Results indicated that 52.3% had poor dietary patterns, 90.7% had poor sleep quality, and 26.2% experienced stress. Logistic regression analysis revealed that stress was the most dominant risk factor (OR=11.78; 95% CI: 3.72–37.29; p<0.001), followed by dietary pattern (OR=2.49; 95% CI: 1.02–6.08; p=0.046), while sleep quality showed no significant association (p=0.448). In conclusion, stress is the primary risk factor for gastritis among nursing students. Therefore, stress management and lifestyle interventions are necessary to prevent gastritis and promote students' well-being.
