Abstract

High intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes several adverse effect such as erythema, sunburn, pigmentation, early senescence, and skin cancer. These effects can be prevented by using sun protection product. Wali (Brucea javanica L. Merr) is one of natural plants that contain phenol and flavonoid. These compounds are proven to have sunscreen effect. The purposes of this studies are to formulate and evaluate the effectivity of oil-in-water-type sunscreen cream using 1% ethanol extract of Wali seed. The sunscreen cream is developed by using a fusion method and the evaluation of the effectivity is conducted in vivo on the skin of mice (Mus musculus). The formulated sunscreen cream is then tested for its physical properties, including homogenity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and stability. The effectivity of the formulated cream is also tested by observing the formation of erytema on the skin of mice (Mus musculus). Erythema appearing on the mouse skin is analyzed with ImageJ and SPSS v23 using the one way anova method. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Wali seeds could be formulated into sunscreen cream. Furthermore, the formulated cream was also able to protect the mice skin against the formation of erythema significantly compared to negative controls (p

Abstract

Drug misuse is an urgent public health issue, often arising from a lack of knowledge about proper medication use. Research shows that over half of the medications worldwide are used irrationally. The DAGUSIBU program (Dapatkan, Gunakan, Simpan, Buang or known as Get, Use, Store, Dispose) was developed as a solution to address this issue by providing education on proper medication management. This community service activity was organized by the Pharmacy Study Program and the Pharmacy Professional Education Program (PSPPA), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), Universitas Mataram, on August 9, 2024, at Kesuma Catholic High School in Mataram. The primary goal of this activity was to teach students the correct ways to obtain, use, store, and dispose of medications, as well as to introduce the pharmacist profession and the Pharmacy program at UNRAM to high school students. The activity included interactive presentations on DAGUSIBU, an introduction to the pharmacist profession, and a quiz competition as an evaluation method. The quiz encouraged active student participation, with prizes to boost motivation. Despite challenges such as varying levels of student comprehension and time constraints, the activity successfully improved students’ understanding of rational drug use and introduced career opportunities in pharmacy. Overall, this activity proved effective in raising student awareness and knowledge, positively impacting their health literacy.

Abstract

Abstract

Cutaneous Candida albicans infection is characterized by persistent inflammation, epidermal damage, and dysregulated immune responses. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as promising antifungal agents with additional immunomodulatory properties; however, their effects on skin pathology and local immune responses during candidiasis remain incompletely defined. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of a topical AgNP-based cream in a murine model of C. albicans–induced skin infection. AgNPs were green-synthesized using an aqueous leaf extract of Piper ornatum. A murine model of cutaneous C. albicans infection was established, and infected mice were treated topically with AgNP-based cream formulations at concentrations of 4% or 6%. Disease severity was assessed through macroscopic skin evaluation and histopathological analysis. Immune modulation was examined by flow cytometric analysis of CD4⁺ T-cell subsets expressing TNFα and IL-17, as well as CD11b⁺ myeloid cells expressing IL-6 and IL-10. Untreated infected mice exhibited severe cutaneous pathology, including persistent erythema, erosive lesions, epidermal hyperkeratosis, and acanthosis. These changes were accompanied by marked immune dysregulation, characterized by expansion of CD4⁺IL-17⁺ T-cells, suppression of TNFα-producing CD4⁺ T-cells, increased IL-6 expression, and reduced IL-10 production in CD11b⁺ myeloid cells. Topical AgNP treatment significantly ameliorated macroscopic and histological skin damage, restoring epidermal architecture toward normal. Immunologically, AgNP therapy attenuated pathological Th17 responses, reduced IL-6-producing myeloid cells, enhanced IL-10 expression, and maintained TNFα at controlled levels. Both AgNP concentrations were effective, with the 4% AgNP formulation showing slightly superior normalization of epidermal thickness and inflammatory markers. Overall, topical AgNP-based cream effectively alleviated cutaneous C. albicans infection by combining antifungal activity with coordinated immunomodulation of both adaptive and innate immune responses. By suppressing excessive IL-17– and IL-6–driven inflammation while promoting regulatory immune pathways, AgNP treatment supports tissue repair and immune homeostasis, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic strategy for cutaneous candidiasis.
