Abstract

This study analyzes the chemical properties of Meranti Tembaga wood (Shorea leprosula Mig.) from natural forests and intensively managed plantation forests (Silin) at PT. Dwima Jaya Utama. Samples were taken from trees with diameters of 28 cm, 36 cm, 43 cm, and 51 cm to compare extractive content (cold water, hot water, ethanol-toluene), holocellulose, α-cellulose, lignin, and ash levels. Results showed that Silin-grown wood had higher extractive content in cold and hot water but lower lignin and ash levels compared to natural forest wood. α-Cellulose content was consistently high across all diameters, meeting industrial standards. The findings suggest that Silin techniques can produce quality wood with shorter harvest cycles, though chemical properties vary by diameter and origin. This research provides valuable insights for sustainable forest management and industrial applications of Shorea leprosula.

Abstract

Wood durability is a crucial factor in its utilization, especially in tropical regions with high humidity levels. Terantang wood is classified as lightweight wood with low resistance to wood-degrading organisms. Preservation using liquid smoke is one of the alternative methods to enhance the durability of Terantang wood. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of liquid smoke derived from Gelam wood (Melaleuca sp.) as a natural preservative for Terantang wood. The preservation process was conducted using a cold-soaking method for 48 hours with three different liquid smoke concentrations: 10%, 20%, and 30%. After treatment, the wood samples were dried and tested to determine their retention and absorption values. The results showed that increasing the liquid smoke concentration directly correlated with higher retention and absorption values. The 30% concentration exhibited the highest retention (0.055 g/cm³) and absorption (0.241 g/cm³), indicating superior effectiveness in enhancing wood durability. Retention was highest near the heartwood, while absorption was greater near the sapwood. These findings suggest that Gelam wood liquid smoke has significant potential as an eco-friendly and cost-effective wood preservative. Its use can serve as a safer alternative to synthetic preservatives, supporting more sustainable wood processing practices. Abstract

Terantang is commonly found growing in the peat swamp forests of Central Kalimantan. It holds significant economic value in the wood processing industry; however, it has low durability, requiring preservation treatments to enhance its wood quality. This study aims to analyze the impact of Gelam wood liquid smoke concentration and the radial direction of Terantang wood on its physical properties, particularly wood weight and specific gravity, after being stored outdoors under shaded conditions for 5 weeks. A factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed, incorporating two factors: liquid smoke concentration (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) and radial direction of the wood (near the bark, middle, and near the pith). The data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s HSD test to determine significant differences between treatments. The results indicated that increasing the concentration of liquid smoke significantly enhanced both the wood weight and specific gravity. The 30% liquid smoke concentration produced the highest increase in specific gravity (0.5240 g/cm³). The radial direction of the wood also had a significant effect, with the near-pith section showing higher specific gravity. The interaction between liquid smoke concentration and radial direction significantly influenced the wood weight. These findings suggest that Gelam wood liquid smoke is an effective natural preservative that can significantly maintain the physical quality of Terantang wood stored outdoors under shaded conditions for 5 weeks, specifically in terms of wood weight and specific gravity. This method shows potential for use in sustainable wood processing industries.
