Abstract

Greenpeace Indonesia looking for Wilmar International as actor for making deforestation.. Greenpeace Indonesia pressured Wilmar International to commit to implementing their No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) policy through the establishment of a transnational advocacy network to make enough power to put pressure on Wilmar International. Through this method, Greenpeace Indonesia succeeded in making Wilmar International pressured and changed its behavior. This research analyzes how Greenpeace Indonesia's strategy in forming transnational advocacy networks so that the network suppresses and monitors the behavior of target actor through the Keck & Sikkink Transnational Advocacy Network theory. Researchers used qualitative methods with a case study approach. Data collection comes from primary and secondary data and data collection through literature studies from books, journals and articles. The results of this study indicate that Greenpeace Indonesia is very optimal in carrying out Information Politics and Leverage Politics strategies. Greenpeace Indonesia has creative and confrontational methods in implementing the Symbolic Politics strategy. But the weakness of this strategy is that Greenpeace Indonesia seems to be exclusive in carrying out its actions by other environmental NGOs, especially domestic-based environmental NGOs. The weaknesses of these four strategies are Accountability Politics where Greenpeace Indonesia does not have the commitment of Wilmar International which has binding legal force.

Abstract

This article examines Indonesia's One Channel System (OCS) as a strategic labor migration policy. Grounded in a qualitative content analysis of policy documents and bilateral agreements, the study moves beyond a descriptive account to offer a critical evaluation of the OCS. It utilizes Michael G. Roskin’s theory of National Interest as a foundational framework for understanding the state’s motivations. Still, it enriches this with complementary lenses from the International Relations literature, including migration governance, labor diplomacy, and human security. The findings affirm that the OCS serves as a key instrument of Indonesian statecraft, advancing national security, securing economic interests through remittance formalization, and enhancing international prestige. However, the analysis reveals that significant challenges severelly constrain the policy’s effectiveness. These include a persistent lack of bilateral cooperation from Malaysia, critical on-the-ground implementation gaps, and the unintended risk of state overreach. A fundamental disconnect between the policy’s top-down objectives and the lived realities and agency of migrant workers. The study concludes that while the OCS is a vital assertion of regulatory sovereignty, its success is contingent on bridging the gap between state-centric interests and worker-centric protection. It suggests that future policy must prioritize legally binding bilateral enforcement and address deep-rooted implementation failures.

Abstract

The Palestine–Israel conflict, is one of the most complex and prolonged issues in modern international politics, marked by an acute humanitarian crisis since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. In this context, Indonesia holds a distinctive position as a country that has consistently supported the Palestinian struggle, from the era of President Soekarno to President Joko Widodo. This research, aims to analyze Indonesia's foreign policy toward the Palestine–Israel issue through the lens of normative theory in International Relations, which emphasizes the importance of moral values, ethical principles, and international norms in state decision-making. Utilizing a qualitative method based on literature studies and in-depth interviews, this study explores how the constitutional foundation of the 1945 Constitution, the values of Pancasila, and the nation's moral identity shape Indonesia’s consistent stance in international forums. The findings reveal, that Indonesia’s support for Palestine is not merely a political strategy or a response to global dynamics, but rather a representation of a normative commitment to justice, human rights, and anti-colonial principles. The normative theory approach in this study demonstrates that Indonesia’s foreign policy reflects the nation’s ethical identity as well as its moral stance in confronting global injustices experienced by the Palestinian people. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how normative theory can be applied to analyze foreign policy in the Global South, particularly in post-colonial contexts. The study also provides insights for policy makers and scholars in recognizing the enduring role of ethical considerations in shaping international relations.

Abstract

This research examines dual subordination of Indonesian female peacekeepers experiencing layered control from private institutions (family/husbands) and public institutions (state/military). Using critical feminist methodology through qualitative literature-based discourse analysis, this study applies feminist state theory and intersectionality analysis to reveal how the state instrumentalizes marriage institutions controlling female soldiers' professional autonomy. Findings indicate spousal permission requirements for peacekeeping assignments create dual ownership: women belong to husbands privately and the state publicly, making career advancement contingent on spousal approval rather than solely professional competence. Three operational mechanisms function: juridical domestication (codifying marital status as professional determinant), institutional collusion (domestic-military patriarchy collaboration), and internalized patriarchy (women accepting subordination systems). Comparative analysis reveals male soldiers face no equivalent requirements, perpetuating hegemonic masculinity. This study offers a new analytical framework conceptualizing dual ownership through three subordination mechanisms for understanding spousal-permission regulations in troop-contributing countries, advancing knowledge on domestic-institutional patriarchy intersections limiting women's peacekeeping participation.

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyzes the effectiveness of the Indonesia-Malaysia cooperation in implementing the One Channel System (OCS) concerning the enhanced protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMW) in the domestic sector. The primary issue investigated is the suboptimal substantive protection for IMW, despite the new policy framework established by the 2022 MoU. Using a qualitative research method involving policy document analysis and stakeholder interviews, this study examines the dynamics of OCS implementation. The findings indicate that the improvement in protection is more procedural, such as the legalization of tens of thousands of placements, rather than substantive progress, which relates to the improvement of workers’ real conditions. The effectiveness of OCS on the ground is undermined by three main factors: an asymmetry of national interests between Indonesia's focus on protection and Malaysia's orientation towards fulfilling labor demands; weak bilateral oversight and law enforcement mechanisms; and the continued operation of non-procedural recruitment channels by illegal brokers. This study recommends strengthening joint oversight institutions and enforcing strict law enforcement to bridge the gap between formal policy and on-the-ground reality.

Abstract

This research aims to examine human trafficking along the Indonesia–Malaysia border in Kalimantan and analyze how bilateral cooperation in border management addresses this issue. Using a qualitative descriptive approach within a normative legal framework, the study finds that human trafficking in Kalimantan is driven by several key factors, including geographic location, cultural ties, economic pressures, and government policies. Border areas such as Entikong, Aruk, and others are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to Malaysia and strong cross-border ethnic connections. Economic factors, especially limited job opportunities in Kalimantan, push Indonesian migrant workers to seek employment in Malaysia, which offers better income and work options. Government policies, including ratification of international conventions and the establishment of a Task Force, face challenges in implementation. Effective handling of human trafficking requires strong cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, including joint patrols, intelligence sharing, joint training programs, collaboration with NGOs, and the development of operational protocols to strengthen border management and protect vulnerable populations.
