Abstract

Directive shows a strong relationship between speaker and hearer moreover in the textbook that used by the students and teacher in the teaching and learning process. This research investigated the directive speech acts used in Bahasa Inggris textbook for senior high school grade XI. Descriptive qualitative of document study method was implied in this research. The source of data in this research is Bahasa Inggris textbook for senior high school grade XI published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. Document analysis was used to collect the data. The steps are looking for the English textbook entitle Bahasa Inggris textbook for senior high school grade XI, then reading the textbook and analyze the directive speech acts in the English textbook. The researcher used theory of Kreidler (1998) to analyze the type of directive speech acts. In this research, the researcher applied the technique of data analysis based on Miles, et al. (2014) theories. The data were analyzed through three steps, those are data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The result showed that 93 data of directive speech acts are found in the textbook. Command is the most frequent type of directive speech acts that appear in the textbook. The total of command is 70 data or 75,26% while request only appears three times or 3,24% in the textbook. There are 20 data or 21,50% suggestions those are used in the textbook to ask the students doing something in the teaching and learning activities. From this result, it is anticipated that teachers would be able to utilize more directing strategies to encourage students to actively think through and respond to questions from the teacher related to the textbook.Keywords: speech acts, directive speech acts, textbook

Abstract

The translation is an activity that increases students' awareness of the similarities and differences between the grammatical structure of the source language and the target language. Reveals that for a good translation to achieve or meet certain factors such as accuracy, readability, and acceptability. The difference in grammatical structure between the source language and the target language often results in some changes in meaning during the translation process. This research find out the student’s ability in English translation and also the accuracy, readability, and acceptability of the results of abstract translations. Method in this research was descriptive qualitative research with total number of population 80 student’s abstract translations.  The results of research on students' ability to translate from Indonesian into English in terms of accuracy is the total score 16.2, readability total score 17.4, and acceptability is 17.4%. the percentage of the mean score 95.6% with very excellent category. From the analysis of students' abilities in translating from Indonesia to English, the authors found that 80 students who translated abstracts achieved a very good level/excellent. In general, the author concludes that the ability of undergraduate nursing study program students in the 2020/2021 academic year in translating Indonesian into English was very good. Abstract

In communicating, humans sometimes need to show directly what they mean. The use of language in communication between humans in dating is a form of discourse. Besides discourse being a form of language use, discourse is also an utterance. Discourse analysis based on context is, of course, inseparable from the use of pragmatics. Pragmatic discourse analysis in literary works has been done—analysis of the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramodya Ananta Tour, translated into English by Max. This study aims to analyze discourse with a pragmatic approach in the short story Blarak by Yanusa Nugroho. The type of research used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study are the words or sentences contained in the short story Blarak by Yanusa Nugroho which are contained in the 2009 Kompas short story collection. The data collection technique in this study used note-taking techniques. This study's research instrument (data collection instrument) is from the researcher himself. The analysis technique used in this study is a qualitative data analysis technique. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the deixis in the short story Blarak by Yanusa Nugroho includes personal deixis, place deixis, and time deixis.
