Abstract

Areca nut husk fibers have the potential to be used as reinforcement in polymer composites as a substitute for synthetic fibres. In the manufacture of fibre composites, one of the important factors in determining the strength is the matrix to fibre ratio. This study aims to determine the effective ratio or fraction between areca nut husk fibre and orthophthalic polyester resin. Before using areca nut husk fibre, it was chemically treated so that only cellulose remained in the fibre. The areca nut husk fibre was processed into sheets. The composite was manufactured using the hand lay-up technique. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties. Based on the results of the tests conducted, there are differences in the mechanical properties of the composites. The tensile test results show that the 40% fibre fraction has the highest tensile strength and modulus values. On the other hand, in the flexure tests, the highest tensile strength and modulus values are found in the 30% fibre fraction.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of short tutorial videos in teaching the essential operation of lathe machines in mechanical engineering. Utilizing the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the research was conducted at SMK N 1 Sumatera Barat, involving 65 vocational school students. The short tutorial videos were designed to enhance students' comprehension and cognitive ability in lathe machine operations, addressing the challenges posed by traditional teaching methods. Data were collected through questionnaires and practical tests to assess students' understanding and skills. The findings revealed that the short tutorial videos significantly improved students' comprehension and cognitive ability, although variations in understanding levels were observed. Normality tests confirmed a normal data distribution, allowing for the use of paired sample t-tests, which indicated no significant difference between the Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Mechanical Engineering groups after using the tutorials. Validation by media and content experts demonstrated the high quality and relevance of the instructional material. This study underscores the importance of developing more interactive and adaptive learning media and highlights the need to explore further other factors influencing cognitive ability.

Abstract

Abstract

Study towards the recycling of PET waste has arisen in the last decades. One of the most widely used methods was the mechanical recycling process due to its simplicity and low cost of production. In this research, PET waste obtained from the disposable water gallon containers was used to produce recycled PET fibers for textile applications. The PET fibers were prepared using the extrusion technique by varying the processing temperatures, i.e., 200, 210, 220, 230, and 240°C. The diameter, FTIR analysis, XRD analysis, and mechanical properties of the PET fibers at various processing temperatures were studied. The results showed that the optimum processing temperature for preparing recycled PET fibers was 210°C with a diameter of 0.23 mm, a degree of crystallinity of 8.9%, a tensile strength of 70.4 MPa, and an elongation at break of 83.6%. In conclusion, PET waste shows a promising application to be processed as recycled PET fibers for textile applications.
