Abstract

Abstract

River water pollution due to high organic waste load has become a serious environmental issue, marked by high COD values. This study aims to analyze the potential of eco-enzyme from fruit peel waste in reducing COD values in batch-contaminated river water. Eco-enzyme was made from banana, orange, watermelon, papaya, and pineapple peels with a ratio of 3:1:10 (organic material:molasses:water) thru three months of fermentation. Testing was conducted on artificial river water with concentration variations of 5%, 10%, and 15% over 12 days. The parameters measured included pH, temperature, DO, and COD. The results showed that the eco-enzyme has protease, amylase, and lipase bioactivity. The decrease in COD values was intensive from day 1 to day 5 and reached a steady state from day 9 to day 12. A 5% concentration provided the lowest final COD value (22-30 ppm) with banana and pineapple peels as the best raw materials

Abstract

The increasing organic pollution in lake water systems due to continuous domestic wastewater discharge presents significant environmental challenges, particularly in urban areas. This study investigates the biocatalytic performance and dosage-dependent behavior of fruit peel–derived eco-enzymes in removing organic matter from simulated lake water under laboratory-scale batch conditions. Eco-enzymes were produced from banana, pineapple, papaya, watermelon, and orange peels, including a mixed formulation, produced through a three-month anaerobic fermentation process. The products were characterized based on physicochemical properties and enzymatic activities, including amylase, protease, and lipase, to evaluate their biocatalytic potential. Batch experiments were conducted using eco-enzyme dosages of 5%, 10%, and 15%, with continuous monitoring of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) over 12 days until steady-state conditions were achieved. The results showed that eco-enzymes exhibited significant biocatalytic activity, promoting enzymatic hydrolysis and degradation of complex organic compounds into simpler biodegradable forms. Treatment performance was strongly influenced by dosage, where the 5% concentration achieved the highest removal efficiencies, with maximum reductions of 71.7% for COD and 74.6% for BOD, while higher dosages reduced performance due to additional organic loading. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA confirmed that eco-enzyme dosage significantly affected treatment performance, with highly significant differences for COD removal (F = 280.684; p < 0.05) and significant differences for BOD removal (F = 185.117; p < 0.05). The 5% dosage consistently produced the highest kinetic constants for both COD and BOD removal. The highest COD rate constant was obtained with the banana-based eco-enzyme (k = 1.0815 day⁻¹), whereas the highest BOD rate constant was achieved by the pineapple-based eco-enzyme (k = 1.0387 day⁻¹). Higher dosages (10% and 15%) resulted in negative removal efficiencies, suggesting inhibition due to excessive organic loading and preventing meaningful kinetic interpretation. These findings demonstrate the dual role of eco-enzymes as both biocatalytic agents and contributors to organic loading, highlighting the importance of dosage optimization supported by both statistical and kinetic approaches in sustainable lake water remediation systems.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the potential of utilizing rainwater at the Rectorate Building of Universitas Andalas by examining both its quantity and quality, and by proposing an appropriate rainwater harvesting system (RWHS) design. The quantitative assessment employed 20 years (2003–2022) of maximum daily rainfall data collected from the Batu Busuak Station as the primary reference, supported by three additional stations. Based on a planned roof catchment area of 53.25 m², the calculated runoff discharge is 0.00013 m³/s, indicating that rainwater has considerable potential to serve as an alternative water source. The quality of rainwater shows that parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) comply with the water quality standards set by the Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 2 of 2023 and Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. However, the rainwater exhibits an acidic pH (4.14 ± 0.53) and elevated Escherichia coli levels (34.03 ± 41.86 MPN/100 mL), which exceed permissible limits and require treatment prior to use. The selection of suitable treatment technologies was conducted using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. The analysis showed that sand–calcite filtration system combined with chlorination as the most effective option, achieving a score of 95.90. This system is recommended for non-potable applications, specifically for toilet flushing, with an estimated water demand of 4.93 m³ and a ground tank capacity of 5 m³. The total estimated cost of the proposed RWHS is approximately IDR 26,258,000. Keyword: rainwater, rainwater quality, Log Pearson Type III, Simple Additive Weighting, Rainwater Harvesting System
