Abstract

Coal ash from the Sawahlunto City coal mine is used to backfill former mine land. This application poses a clear threat to groundwater quality. The objective of this study is clear: to analyze the concentration of heavy metals, including Ni and Cu, and their distribution in groundwater around the coal ash landfill area using response surface methodology in design of experiments. Groundwater samples were taken three times at four locations spaced 0 m, 365 m, 730 m, and 850 m by guiding SNI 6989.58.2008. Laboratory tests of metal concentrations refer to SNI 6989-84:2019. Water quality analysis showed Ni concentration exceeded drinking water quality standards with a measured concentration of 0.227 mg/L, while Cu parameters were still within safe limits with concentrations of 0.0002 mg/L and 0.02 mg/L. The metal distribution analysis definitively showed that coal ash landfilling in the former mining area contributed to groundwater pollution by Ni. The distribution pattern of Ni and Cu decreases with increasing distance. It is imperative that the FABA landfill area be located away from settlements that use groundwater to protect consumers. Further research is needed to determine the safe distance between the coal ash landfill site and groundwater sources.

Abstract

Domestic wastewater management on university campuses is a crucial aspect of supporting sustainable development. As a center of academic and non-academic activities, Universitas Andalas produces a significant volume of domestic wastewater from the daily activities of its 31,549 academic community members as of 2023. One of its key facilities is the Shared Lecture Building complex, consisting of 10 buildings (A–J), which applies a separated wastewater management system: greywater from floor drains and washbasins is discharged directly into the nearest drainage, while blackwater from toilets is channeled into septic tanks. Currently, Universitas Andalas lacks comprehensive data and planning related to its Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD), despite Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 requiring domestic wastewater to be safely treated before discharge into water bodies. This study aims to evaluate and provide recommendations for an effective and efficient SPALD, specifically for the Shared Lecture Buildings. The method used involves field observations to collect data on the existing conditions. The results show that of the 19 septic tanks observed, 36.84% did not meet vent pipe requirements, 21.05% did not follow the appropriate desludging interval, and 42.11% lacked inspection openings. Furthermore, the effluent from these septic tanks is directly discharged into drainage channels without further treatment, posing a risk of contamination to surrounding water bodies and groundwater. This study is expected to serve as a basis for improving septic tank systems in accordance with SNI 2398:2017, so that wastewater management at Universitas Andalas can operate more optimally and sustainably.   Keyword: domestic wastewater; blackwater; greywater; SPALD; Universitas Andalas

Abstract

This study analyzes the potential to reuse AC condensate water in Andalas University. The research was conducted in the Rectorate Building, the Civil Engineering Department, and the Environmental Engineering Department. AC condensate water sampling was conducted in 8 locations from the Rectorate, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering office buildings. The parameters analyzed were pH, DO, Turbidity, COD, Metals, E.coli, and Total Coliform. Water quality was compared with the Minister of Health Regulation Number 2 of 2023, World Health Organization (WHO) for Drinking Water Quality Standards and Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021 concerning implementing Environmental Protection and Management. The results of water quality testing show that in addition to the parameters of pH, DO, Turbidity, COD, and Metals that have met the quality standards, the levels of iron (Fe), COD, and Total Coliform exceed the quality standards of the Minister of Health Regulation Number 2 of 2023. Used AC water is not recommended for consumption as drinking water. However, condensate AC water can be used for several activities, such as watering plants, cleaning floors and specific areas, and flushing toilets. The AC condensate water characterization results show that iron (Fe), COD, and Total Coliform parameters exceed the quality standards for drinking water requirements. AC condensate water is not recommended for consumption as drinking water without prior treatment. Used AC water can be utilized for several activities, such as watering plants, cleaning the floor, and cleaning the toilet. Keyword: condensate water; office building; potential; water source

Abstract

University students are key agents in promoting environmental sustainability, making it essential to assess their level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions regarding environmental awareness. This study aims to evaluate environmental awareness among university students through a structured questionnaire survey. The instrument was distributed to 71 students across different academic levels at a university in West Sumatra Province. The results indicate that while most students possess a basic understanding of environmental issues, their ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate such issues remains limited. In terms of attitudes, students generally demonstrate positive dispositions, although further development is needed to foster active participation and social responsibility. Regarding environmentally conscious actions, students have not yet consistently adopted sustainable behaviors, particularly at the level of habitual and innovative practices. Key behaviors that require improvement include waste separation, refusal to use plastic bags, the use of reusable food containers, and recycling practices. These findings highlight the need for more practical and reflective environmental education at the higher education level. Keyword: university students, knowledge, attitude, action, environment

Abstract

Fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) in Sawahlunto City are backfilling materials for former mining areas. The FABA dumping is estimated to hurt groundwater. This study aims to analyze the concentration of Pb metal in groundwater and its distribution using response surface methodology. This study is a quantitative experimental field research using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The research subjects involved were groundwater samples from four different points around the fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) dumping location in Sawahlunto City. The data collection method was carried out by taking groundwater samples three times consecutively with a three-week interval, following the procedures of SNI 6989.58: 2008 and SNI 6989-84: 2019. Data analysis methods included ANOVA and RSM tests in the SAS platform. The research findings showed that the groundwater at the study location did not meet drinking water quality with a Pb concentration of 0.144 mg/L exceeding the quality standard (0.01 mg/L). The accumulation of FABA in former mining areas pollutes groundwater with Pb parameters. The distribution pattern of Pb decreases with increasing distance and increases with increasing time. Therefore, the government needs to re-evaluate the implementation of FABA utilization as a filling material for former mining areas. The implications of this study indicate the need to re-evaluate the practice of FABA disposal in mine pits, as improper waste disposal will negatively impact groundwater quality.

Abstract

The growth of illegal shrimp ponds in Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman Regency has been very widespread recently. This is because the advantages of shrimp cultivation include fast growth, high survival rate, high shrimp appetite, greater resistance to disease attacks and relatively short rearing time, namely 90-100 days per cycle. As shrimp cultivation develops in this area, environmental pollution problems arise. Of course, this is contrary to Law number 36 of 2009 concerning Health, Article 4 and Article 6 states that everyone has the right to health and everyone has the right to a healthy environment for achieving a level of health. Based on preliminary interviews with the community around the shrimp ponds, it was stated that the existence of illegal shrimp ponds does not take into account the impact on the environment, and even disturbs the community. Meanwhile, there is no action by the district or local government to control or manage the impacts, so various efforts are needed to restore optimal health status for the surrounding community.

Abstract

The high demand water for sanitation purposes in Engineering Faculty, Andalas University, particularly for toilet flushing systems, has not been balanced by utilization of sustainable alternative water sources. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate feasibility of rainwater quality as non-potable water source planned for implementation in the buildings of Engineering Faculty, Andalas University. The feasibility assessment refers to Regulation of Health Minister of Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023. Rainwater samples collected directly from building roof downpipes, with three repetitions at the same location. The parameters of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature were measured in situ using Lutron DO-5510 dissolved oxygen meter and portable pH meter, while turbidity, BOD, COD, TSS, and total coliform were analyzed at Environmental Engineering Department Laboratory of Andalas University using standard methods based on SNI 6989.57:2008 and US EPA Method 1699. The results indicate that pH, DO, temperature, BOD, COD, TSS, and turbidity comply with the established quality standards, whereas total coliform levels exceed the permissible limit. The presence of total coliform is presumably due to contamination from bird droppings on roof surfaces, particularly in areas surrounded by vegetation.

Abstract

This study evaluates the efficiency of water usage in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Universitas Andalas (Unand) by analyzing water consumption volume, identifying potential leaks, and comparing the findings with applicable standards for laboratories and offices. A 1.5-inch water meter was installed at the outlet of the rooftop reservoir on the 4th floor to measure water usage volume, and manual attendance devices were used to record the number of water users in the office and laboratory. Leakage testing was performed using the step test method, where water flow was stopped for 16 hours overnight to monitor changes in the water meter readings, with results indicating no leakage. The study found that the highest water consumption was 39.66 L/person/day in the laboratory and 55.06 L/person/day in the office. Water consumption in laboratories was found to be 100-200 L/person/day according to the standard, while water use in offices slightly exceeds the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 03-7065-2005 of 50 L/person/day. The study recommends implementing water conservation technologies, such as automatic faucets and dual-flush toilet systems, to reduce water consumption and enhance water efficiency.
