Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out students’ learning style preference and its correlation with their English Proficiency. The research questions were as follows (1) what are the most preferred learning styles of EFL Learner at English Department? (2) Is there any significant correlation between students’ learning style preferences and their English Proficiency? The study used Correlation design. The number of sample in this study was 35 students from English department of Halu Oleo University in the academic year who had followed TOEFL test. The data were collected using questionnaire which adopted   Perceptual   Learning-Style   Preference   Questionnaire   (PLSPQ), developed by John Reid (1987) consisting of 30 statements and student’s TOEFL  score.  The  data  of  this  study  were  analyzed  through  descriptive statistic and Linear Regression Analysis. The results showed that (1) major learning style were tactile learning style and kinesthetic learning style (2) The coefficient correlation was 0.070 which was greater than 0.05 (level of significance).  It  means  that  there  was  no  correlation  between  students’ learning style and their English proficiency.Keywords: Student’s Learning Style, English Proficiency.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been discussed for a long time around the world in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). Teaching English based on students’ needs is  important,  particularly  for  those  learners  who  learn English beyond the academic purposes such as vocational high school students. The objective of this study is to analyse nursing   students’   needs   for   ESP   materials   at   SMKS Kesehatan Kendari based on Target Situation Analysis. Therefore, this study is conducted to identify the Target Situation Analysis (TSA) of one of vocational high school in Kendari.  This study employed  research  and  development design with 22 samples. The data obtained from questionnaire were analysed statistically by using SPSS version 16.0. The result shows that students need in learning English process for the tasks of speaking skill; how to ask question English well, how to answer question English well, do  communication  with  schoolmates,  do  communication with   teachers,   and   do   communication   with   patients. Listening skill; listening and understanding when do face to face conversations, listening and understanding through conversation on the phone, listening and understanding the content of forum discussions, and listening and understanding the content of announcements. Reading skill; how to read health magazine, how to read announcement, and how to read patient list, and Writing skill; how to fill the patients form and how to write medical report. Based on the findings, it concludes that speaking and listening skills are the most needed by nursing students in order to communicate in English. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Need  Analysis, Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Nursing Students

Abstract

Students’ speaking performance could be affected by factors that come from performance conditions (time pressure, planning, standard of performance and amount of support), affective factors (such as motivation, confidence and anxiety), listening ability, topical knowledge and feedback during speaking activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze, describe and determine factors affecting students’ difficulties in speaking  performance  of  the  tenth-grade  students  of SMA Negeri 1 Tiworo Kepulauan. This study employed quantitative design in the form of survey. The samples were 30 students of X MIA 2 which were taken by using random sampling. The data were collected by using close ended questionnaire and were analyzed by using SPSS version 16. The results of this research showed that of the three factors affecting students’ difficulties in speaking, the highest percentage was linguistic factors including grammar,  vocabulary  and  pronunciation.  It  was concluded that the students got difficulties in performing speaking task. Keywords: Students, Difficulties, Speaking Performance

Abstract

Paraphrasing is one of the major skill for academic writing and some have considered that the teaching of paraphrasing can help students avoid copying from source texts. The objective of this research was to find out the problems faced in paraphrasing the text and how to deal with the problems. Quantitative design was used in this study to answer the research questions. There were 10 participants as the subject in this study. The data were collected from paraphrasing text, questionnaire, and interview. The finding of the data analysis shows that lack of vocabulary and lack of grammar knowledge are the problems faced by most of the participants in paraphrasing the text. From the text, it was found that just 17% of students were able to change the word or synonym from the original text and 17 % students were able to change grammar or structure from original text. From the questionnaires, the means score shows that the students have most problems in grammar and lack of vocabulary in paraphrasing the text in which the highest means score fall into the question 17 and 19 with score 3. From the interview, it was also found that most students mentioned lack of vocabulary and grammar as the problems in paraphrasing the text. Furthermore, practicing more, reading more the original text, reading the dictionary and learning more from the internet are the solutions to deal with the problems in paraphrasing the text.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether Moodle E-learning has a significant effect on students' writing achievement at SMAN 1 Kodeoha or not. This research used pre-experimental design. The population of this study were all of the X grade of math and science students. The sample of this research were 28 students at X MIPA 1 class which consisted of 12 females and 16 males. The sample taken by using random sampling. The instrument of this research was writing test and used five writing’s components of ESL composition rubric profile by Jacobs (1981) namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. To collect the data, the researcher giving pre-test, the treatment by using Moodle E-Learning and also giving post-test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 20.0 version and used paired sample t-test to test the hypothesis of this study. The result of this study showed that students’ mean score were 64.58 at pre-test and 86.66 at post-test. As the result, the mean score of post - test was higher than in pre-test. Based on the calculation of t-test, it showed that the score of t- t-test = 14.424 was higher than t-table = 2.051 and the p-value = 0.000 was lower than = 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. This can be concluded that Moodle E-learning has a significant effect on students' writing achievement at SMAN 1 Kodeoha, Kolaka Utara. Therefore, in improving students writing competence, Moodle E-learning can be used as one of effective methods on upgrading students ‘writing achievement.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) has significant effect on students’ writing explanatory text at SMAN 2 Raha. This research used pre experiment design One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design of class. The population of this research was all eleventh grade students in SMAN 2 Raha who registered on academic years 2019/2020 which were 488 students, while the subject of this research were students at class XI MIA1 which consisted of 40 students, but only 25 students were participated. The research instrument was written test which focus on explanatory text. The researcher collected data by provided pre-test, gave the treatment by applying Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS), and gave the post-test. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version. To examine the hypothesis, the researcher used a paired sample t-test. Based on the result finding, writing explanatory text help students’ on developing their Higher Order Thinking Skill. Writing explanatory text acquired students a great deal of content knowledge before beginning the explanation. Students should be writing detailed and explained sequences of event. In addition, students expect to think critically to showed how and why something happen. Therefore, writing explanatory text has significant effect on students’ higher order thinking skill (HOTS).
