Abstract

The data of this research was taken from Raymond’s Run by T. C. Bambara. This short story is interesting because it contains several verbal communications. This research aims to identify non-verbal communication di Raymond’s Run Short Story. This is library research. The result of this study is there are seven types of nonverbal communication are found in the short story, which include kinesics (body movement and facial expression), physical characteristics, proxemics (space), chronemics (time), paralanguage, artifacts, and environment. It is found that kinesics (body movements and facial expressions) is the most dominant type of nonverbal communication in that short story.

Abstract

Terdapat dua pelaku UMKM di wilayah Malang yaitu Mustika Jamur dan Sari Kedelai Alfi yang memerlukan solusi untuk meningkatkan penjualan mereka setelah terjadinya pandemi. Solusi untuk membantu dua pemilik usaha UMKM yaitu ide kegiatan pelatihan dan praktik pembuatan vlog bisnis berbahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di tempat usaha Mustika Jamur dan Sari Kedelai Alfi yang berada di Malang. Pemilihan lokasi didasarkan pada produk UMKM yang bergerak di bidang makanan dan atau minuman yang berada di wilayah Malang. Beberapa tahapan kegiatan yang sudah dilakukan ada empat tahapan, meliputi (1) memberikan pengetahuan tentang pengertian dan konsep vlog bisnis, (2) memberikan pengetahuan tentang teknik-teknik pembuatan vlog bisnis, (3) menyusun naskah untuk pembuatan vlog bisnis berbahasa Inggris, dan (4) praktik membuat vlog bisnis berbahasa Inggris. Hasil Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini telah memberikan dampak yang baik untuk pelaku UMKM yang dipilih. Mereka mampu membuat vlog yang digunakan untuk bahan media promosi UMKM guna meningkatkan penjualan. Vlog yang dibuat dalam bahasa Inggris juga diharapkan untuk mendatangkan konsumen dari luar.

Abstract

Online learning has been one of crucial topic in the Covid-19 pandemic era. This paper aims to describe the student's perception on the use of YouTube application as online learning media. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach by using survey and discussion. The class of this study was twenty-three students. The questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert-Scale and the interview was analyzed qualitatively. The interview script presented to get students statements about their perceptions of English for MICE online learning via YouTube, whether in positive or negative. The result of this research displays that using YouTube as English for MICE’s online learning media gives many positive effects to the student’s English mastery, such as vocabularies, practices and also increased of their English four skills. Though, frequently pupils had anxiety around deficiencies of internet joining, but this problem perceptibly resolved thriving by them.

Abstract

With a limited number of characters per tweet, writing on Twitter requires creativity. It is unique media format has not only revolutionized online communication but also created a distinct style of writing. In this case, Twitter stands as a platform that reflects the way we write and communicate in English. Researcher wants to investigate the effects of twitter on students’ English writing skill. This is a case study method. This method helps the researcher to identify the problem in detail information. The data collected from questionnaire in English writing learning process. The lecturer becomes the observer or researcher of the research. On the other hand, students become the object of the research. As the conclusion, Twitter had a significant impact on students' writing skills in English. It challenges them to express their thoughts succinctly and effectively within a limited number of characters, encouraging creativity. However, it can also lead to errors and the use of informal language. Meanwhile, Twitter provides exposure to a variety of content and interactions with people from diverse backgrounds, which improves grammatical understanding. It also helps expand vocabulary by offering different words in context.

Abstract

Puisi dan lirik lagu sangat menarik diteliti apalagi apabila kedua sumber data tersebut sama-sama menampilkan tokoh yang sama, namun dicitrakan berbeda satu sama lain. Penelitian ini membandingkan dua karya sastra yang berbeda untuk menggambarkan karakter Richard Cory. Data berasal dari sumber data puisi karya Edwin Arlington dan lirik lagu karya Paul Simon. Dua sumber data tersebut menggambarkan tokoh Richad Cory yang berbeda. Metode penelitian menggunakan metode perbandingan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Edwin Arlington Robinson dan Paul Simon menggambarkan tokoh Richard Cory yang berbeda berdasarkan diksi dan citraan. Edwin Arlington Robinson lebih menekankan diksi yang merujuk kepada tokoh Richard Cory sebagai golongan bangsawan yang hidup pada masa sistem kerajaan. Di sisi lain, Paul Simon lebih menekankan diksi yang merujuk kepada tokoh Richard Cory yaitu merupakan salah seorang selebritis politik.

Abstract

This research explores the intersection of project-based learning (PBL) and technology-enhanced language education, specifically focusing on the implementation of PBL through Google Sites to enhance students’ travel writing skills. The research aims to evaluate both the implementation of PBL in travel writing and students’ perceptions of this learning model. Utilizing a case study methodology, data were collected through observations and questionnaires. English for Tourism Industry students were divided into four groups, each consisting of five students, and each group created one Digital Travel Writing project. Findings indicate that all groups effectively followed three key steps in the PBL process: project preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The resulting Digital Travel Writing projects focused on Central Java, Bali, East Java, and West Nusa Tenggara. Questionnaire responses indicated that most students enjoyed the PBL activities. In conclusion, the implementation of project-based learning using Google Sites was successful in enhancing students’ abilities in the Travel Writing course.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine. There were two purposes of this research: (1) to identify the types of figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine and (2) to describe the meaning of the figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine. The data source of this research was advertisements from 12 Red Digital Magazine, 15 fashion advertisements, and 12 beauty advertisements published in 2022. The data of this research were sentences written in the texts of the advertisements. These data were analyzed by using the qualitative method. This research collects, analyzes, and interprets data through data collection techniques such as observation, documentation, and questionnaires. Based on Johnson & Arp's (2017) theory, it is shown that there were 7 types of figurative language. Starting from the most frequently occurring, they were overstatement/hyperbole, metaphor, personification, simile, paradox, metonymy, and allegory. Overstatement/hyperbole was the most commonly found in advertisements among those types of figurative language. The use of this type can give an impression and influence to the readers; therefore, it is often used to describe the exaggerated quality of the product. Furthermore, the use of figurative language is one way to improve writing in advertising, using figures of speech can make the memorability of advertising sentences, creates imagination, makes sentences more meaningful, and most importantly increases the interest of the reader.

Abstract

Several problems are faced in the English for Public Speaking course. Lecturer wants to implement project-based webinar which held by students’ teamwork. This research aims to identify the implementation of project-based webinar from teamwork’s experiences to organize webinar in English for Public Speaking course. The researcher conducted qualitative method with basic interpretative approach through observation. This research conducted at D-4 English for Tourism Industry, Politeknik Negeri Malang. The subjects were 18 students of the third semester students. Observation was managed along the process of the Project Based Learning implementation in the English for Public Speaking. The result of this study about teamwork’s experiences are being a chief committee, secretary, treasurer, event division, public relation division, also publication and documentation division. The process of the Project Based Learning implementation by creating webinar gives many advantages for the students. It makes the students become more creative and train to be critical due to the problem which is given is based on real problem faced in that time.
