Abstract

Urban forest is one of the public open spaces with a minimum area of 2,500 m2(0.25 hectares) which has various functions, both ecological, social and cultural, economic, and aesthetic functions. Each urban forest has its own potential and function. The urban forest in Palembang has not been used optimally in accordance with its function, especially as a learning space (natural laboratory). This research aims to optimize the function of urban forests in Palembang so that they can be used as natural laboratories in Plant Ecology courses. The method in this study uses a qualitative approach with applied research. Data collection techniques include (triangulation techniques), including: observation on 6 urban forests in Palembang: Punti Kayu Natural Tourism Park Forest, Bukit Siguntang Forest, Bumi Perkemahan Pramuka Gandus City Forest, Forest Area of Sri Mulyono Herlambang Palembang Air Base, OPI Retention Pool Area, and Jakabaring Stadium Area; Interview; and documentation. Based on the results of field observations and interviews with the six urban forests in Palembang, they have various functions including ecological, social and cultural functions, as well as aesthetics. Urban forests that have low biodiversity are the Gandus Scout Campground City Forest and the OPI Retention Pond Area Forest. The Urban Forest of the OPI Retention Pool Area and the City Forest of the Gandus Scout Camping Ground have no potential to be used as natural laboratories, especially in the Ecology course on vegetation analysis material. There needs to be good cooperation from the government, the industrial world, and the community to optimize the function of urban forests.

Abstract

Bukit Siguntang Forest, an urban forest on a hill filled by trees that are believed to be a tomb complex of Malay kings. As an ecosystem, Bukit Siguntang Forest also consists of various understorey. Because of the tourist location, the understorey of Bukit Siguntang Forest tends to be easier to encounter cleaning which is considered as weed and disturbs beauty. The study purpose was to explore the aesthetic potential of the understorey vegetation of Bukit Siguntang Forest. The study method used vegetation analysis with the plot measuring 2m x 2m, which was followed by species identification. The results showed that the understorey identified as dominating species with aesthetic potential were Asystasia gangetica, Bidens pilosa, Borreria laevis, Drymaria cordata, and Mimosa pudica. The understorey which is included in herbs and shrubs had beautiful flowers, unique leaf shapes, and attractive colors. These plants provide the beauty of their parts so that they can be applied to form a flower bed, green coverage and refreshing scenery. However, the growth of understorey also needs to be controlled. That is because understorey can grow rapidly, so that will be growing too densely and messy planting mode. Keywords: aesthetic function, Bukit Siguntang, tourism, understorey vegetation.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore lecturers' knowledge of the Shannon-Wiener index and Effective Species Numbers in the context of biodiversity measurement, examining both factual and conceptual knowledge dimensions. A mixed-methods design with an embedded component was employed. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling, and data were collected using an open-ended questionnaire and a procedural competency test (to reinforce qualitative results). The factual knowledge dimension focused on the relevance of species as a measurement unit, while the conceptual knowledge explored index selection, application, and interpretation of the logarithmic base of the Shannon-Wiener index, and emphasis on Effective Species Numbers. The data analysis was carried out through the stages of qualitative and quantitative data analysis, data integration, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that, regarding factual knowledge, lecturers agreed that species remain the basic unit of biodiversity measurement because they reflect ecosystem conditions and serve as a basis for representing environmental health. In the conceptual dimension, the dominant use of the Shannon-Wiener index, based on the natural logarithm, as a methodological standard was found, driven by pragmatic considerations and its suitability with academic textbooks. Lecturers also pointed out the unitless, scaling, and monotonicity properties of the index, as well as the mathematical implications of choosing a logarithmic base. However, absolute differences in logarithmic bases can make index values incomparable across studies. Despite this understanding, a notable gap emerged regarding Effective Species Numbers. While some respondents acknowledged its importance as an advancement that addresses the limitations of entropy-based measures, others were unfamiliar with the concept. This disparity highlighted the need for curricular enhancement and academic updating. Overall, the study underscored the importance of strengthening mathematical-biological literacy and updating ecological education. Beyond routine calculation of traditional biodiversity indices, learning should encourage deeper conceptual reasoning, ecological interpretation, and awareness of contemporary methodological developments. Keywords: shannon-wiener index, effective species numbers, factual knowledge, conceptual knowledge.
