Abstract

This research investigates the use of poster making to teach social justice issues to undergraduate students of Law and Criminology at a private Islamic university situated in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the study focused on 54 students and their creation of posters on human trafficking, corruption, and cyber crimes. Data were gathered through a peer-assessment rubric with five major indicators: poster appeal, graphic support, slogan, delivery, and time management. Findings revealed that students’s scores for time management (M = 4.06) were the highest and for slogan writing (M = 3.69) were the lowest, suggesting that students were more proficient in collaboration than in persuasive expression. Poster qualitative analysis highlighted the students’ perception of injustice and their call to action through the use of symbolic and powerful imagery of chains, blindfolds, cuts of striking women in red, and simplistic, yet evocative, text. These elements illustrated a heightened sense of awareness, ethical reasoning, and empathy. The results highlight the feasibility of incorporating poster making as a form of instructional practice in social justice pedagogy in law and criminology alongside other non-humanities programs within Islamic universities in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students’ autonomous learning after students experienced synchronous learning. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The study’s instrument is questionnaire through Google Form. The questionnaires consist of 15 items about students autonomous learning during synchronous learning and 10 items about students’ opinion of implementation of autonomous learning during synchronous learning. The data is described from 100 respondents to by descriptive analysis approach. The finding of this study reveals that there were four activities among other which students get, namely getting information about learning objectives for each new topic in synchronous learning, having different learning strategies for each different subject, looking for supporting materials that suit their needs, getting motivation during the class and students carried out learning activities as stated in the course outline from the lecturer's lesson plan. In addition, students' synchronous learning has become one of the factors that has assisted them in encouraging individual learning or keeping them autonomous with the assistance of lecturers' instruction and learning sources.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a key competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly in higher education. This study examines the effect of extensive reading on Quora on EFL students’ critical thinking at the English Language Education Department, Universitas Islam Riau. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 60 second-semester students divided into an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The experimental group received extensive reading instruction using Quora, while the control group used conventional materials. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments, adapting Facione’s critical thinking framework. The outcome revealed that the experimental group's mean score increased from 62.40 to 78.60, and the control group improved from 61.90 to 69.30. An independent samples t-test revealed a significant difference between groups (t = 4.85, p 0.05). These findings indicate that Quora-based extensive reading effectively enhances EFL students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

Background: This study investigates the effect of web-based independent learning (WBIL) on students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), with self-efficacy (SE) and self-concept (SC) as mediating variables, within the context of translation learning in higher education. Methodology: A quantitative research design was employed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected from 55 undergraduate students enrolled in translation-related courses through validated instruments measuring WBIL, SE, SC, and HOTS. Findings: The findings indicate that WBIL has a significant positive effect on both self-efficacy and self-concept. Furthermore, both SE and SC significantly predict students’ HOTS, with self-efficacy emerging as the stronger predictor. Mediation analysis reveals that SE and SC partially mediate the relationship between WBIL and HOTS, indicating that WBIL enhances higher-order thinking skills both directly and indirectly through psychological mechanisms. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence of the WBIL–HOTS relationship specifically within translation learning, a context that requires complex cognitive processes such as analysis, evaluation, and creative decision-making. Unlike prior studies that primarily focus on general digital learning or STEM contexts, this research highlights the role of psychological factors in shaping higher-order thinking in language-based disciplines. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of integrating learner autonomy and psychological readiness in designing effective web-based learning environments for translation education. Originality: This study provides empirical evidence of the WBIL–HOTS relationship specifically within translation learning, a context requiring complex cognitive processes. Unlike prior studies focusing primarily on general digital learning or STEM contexts, this research highlights the crucial role of psychological factors in shaping higher-order thinking in language-based disciplines.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve students’ English reading ability and digital literacy by using Quora as an authentic digital learning platform. A total of 25 students and 2 English teachers from SMAIT Imam Syafii 2, Pekanbaru, participated as partners in this program. The activity was implemented using a participatory training approach based on digital practice. Evaluation instruments consisted of questionnaires, which were analyzed descriptively using interval assessment techniques. The results of the program showed that the use of Quora as a digital reading medium, which provides authentic reading sources, diverse topics, and opportunities for real interaction with global users, was effective in improving students’ reading comprehension and digital literacy. In addition, students demonstrated increased motivation and self-confidence in understanding and responding to English texts. This community service activity highlights the importance of continuous mentoring in integrating technology into English reading instruction and is expected to serve as a replicable model of digital platform-based reading instruction for other secondary school contexts.
