Abstract

In the contemporary globalized society, addressing the challenges of low academic performance and limited English reading comprehension is paramount. This study investigates the potential of the KWL (Know-Want-Learned) learning strategy, a technique posited to enhance student outcomes, in bridging the observed gap between theoretical pedagogies and practical interventions. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, diverse students from varied grades and backgrounds were divided into two groups: one exposed to the KWL technique and another receiving traditional instruction. Standardized tests were employed to measure outcomes. Notably, students undergoing KWL-based instruction exhibited significant advancements in academic performance and English reading comprehension. These findings underscore the value of integrating the KWL strategy into educational curricula. While the results are promising, further studies are warranted to understand the long-term effects and the strategy's adaptability across diverse educational settings and demographics. In essence, this research not only highlights the pressing educational challenges but also introduces an evidence-backed solution for substantial improvement.

Abstract

Pelestarian budaya dengan menggunakan teknologi digital akan memberikan keuntungan bagi pelestarian budaya tersebut. Namun, masih sangat jarang siswa SMK Yapim Pekanbaru mempelajari kebudayaan yang ada di Tanah Melayu sebagai penduduk lokal Pekanbaru. Hal ini dikarenakan kurangnya media informasi terhadap budaya melayu tersebut. Berdasarkan permasalahan yang terjadi di SMK YAPIM Pekanbaru, maka solusi yang ditawarkan adalah pendampingan implementasi Digitalisasi budaya melayu melalui program film animasi “Tajau Emas” pada siswa di SMK YAPIM Pekanbaru selama kurang lebih 1 tahun ajaran. Hasil dari pendampingan ini adalah siswa SMK YAPIM bisa lebih memahami budaya melayu khususnya di Provinsi Riau melalui film animasi “Tajau Emas”. Melalui film tersebut siswa SMK YAPIM lebih dapat mengenal dan melestarikan budaya melayu agar kebudayaan tersebut tidak tergerus oleh zaman.

Abstract

Mata kuliah Critical Reading di perguruan tinggi memainkan peran sentral dalam mengembangkan keterampilan membaca kritis mahasiswa. Dalam konteks global yang terus berkembang, kebutuhan akan pendekatan pembelajaran yang inklusif, adaptif, dan responsif terhadap keberagaman mahasiswa semakin mendesak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi dampak optimalisasi literasi akademis dalam mata kuliah Critical Reading dengan mengintegrasikan kearifan lokal, elemen audio visual, dan American Sign Language (ASL). Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan campuran (mixed methods), menggabungkan analisis kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa meskipun sebagian besar mahasiswa mengakui manfaat mata kuliah Critical Reading, terdapat kebutuhan mendesak untuk meningkatkan dukungan tutorial dan kontekstualisasi materi dengan disiplin studi masing-masing. Implikasi hasil penelitian ini sejalan dengan teori literasi akademis, yang menekankan pentingnya pengembangan keterampilan membaca kritis melalui pendekatan holistik. Rekomendasi yang diajukan mencakup pengembangan modul tutorial tambahan, penyesuaian kurikulum untuk mencakup konteks disiplin studi, dan penerapan strategi pengajaran yang lebih adaptif. Simpulan penelitian ini menegaskan perlunya optimalisasi mata kuliah Critical Reading sebagai bagian integral dari upaya meningkatkan literasi akademis mahasiswa.

Abstract

This research is important in analyzing and describing language styles, which have become one of the linguistics categories. The use of language and language style in literary works has also been studied and is very important for linguistic and literary studies. This article illustrates that stylistic analysis is an effective method to help students improve their reading and appreciation skills. It begins by briefly reviewing how stylistics is applied to teaching English by researchers. It then discusses stylistic analysis and how to do it by providing some examples. Finally, it concludes that teaching advanced English should incorporate stylistics, which are both necessary and practical. Stylistics is one of the sub-topics of learning English in high schools. It can also help students understand advertising language. It also helps students learn foreign languages in English language teaching, such as Indonesian, by preparing them to learn and use foreign languages effectively. Furthermore, Students are expected to be able to understand the language of advertising. To understand the language of advertising, teachers must provide understanding to students through stylistics.

Abstract

Intellectual intelligence is not the only main focus of education but it is also the ability to think critically and read critically as a key element in preparing future generations. This research aims to investigate the impact of parenting styles on the development of children’s critical thinking, critical reading, and multiple intelligences in the educational context. The data collection techniques used were interviews and observation. The research data validity used source and technical triangulations. The research participants were elementary to middle school-level children who came from different parenting styles. Democratic parenting style appears as a strong factor to influence the development of children's critical thinking and critical reading skills. Parents who open the discussions, provide encouragement to question information, and provide space for exploration against the ideas at home, are positively correlated with higher levels of children's critical thinking. In the context of multiple intelligences, a democratic parenting style is also proven to play a key role. This research also provides limitations, especially in terms of the generalization of findings because it uses a case study design with a limited sample.

Abstract

Sosialisasi program desa binaan ini dilakukan di salah satu desa yang ada di Kabupaten Kampar. Desa yang menjadi desa binaan disini adalah Desa Empat Balai, Kecamatan Kuok. Sosialiasasi program desa binaan ini bertujuan sebagai studi pendahuluan tim FKIP UIR, Sembilan Program Studi di lokasi masing-masing sesuai kebutuhan Kepala Desa dan Masyarakat Desa Empat Balai, Kecamatn Kuok, Kabupaten Kampar. Program studi Bahasa Inggris FKIP UIR pada Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat kepada Desa Empat Balai Kecamatan Kuok, insyaAllah meliputi antara lain (1) Memberikan asistensi dalam proses peningkatan kemampuan sumber daya Aparatur Desa dibidang pelatihan Bahasa Inggris. (2) Memberikan asistensi dalam upaya pengembangan peningkatan kemampuan PPK Desa dengan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris. (3) Memberikan asistensi pembinaan kepada Pokdarwis dengan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris. (4) Memberikan asistensi kepada karang taruna dan Siswa SD dan TK dalam pengenalan Bahasa Inggris. (5) Memberikan asistensi kepada desa untuk menjadi Desa Wisata Kuliner. (6) Memperoleh umpan balik bagi perguruan tinggi. (7) Memberikan asistensi dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kesadaran serta kompetensi pemerintah desa serta sumber daya alam yang ada di desa sehingga memberikan kebermanfaatan yang positif untuk peningkatan ekonomi desa. Hasil sosialisasi Bina Desa ini diharapkan agar Mitra mendapatkan asistensi yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan desa sehingga program Bina Desa ini perlu diadakan sebagai guna peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat desa. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dihrapkan adanya respon yang positif terhadap program Bina Desa di Desa Empat Balai, Kecamatan Kuok, Kabupaten Kampar.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the difficulties of English Language Education PPG students at FKIP UIR in carrying out the field experience program in Pekanbaru, Riau. This research is a type of descriptive research that uses a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were 10 students of PPG English education at FKIP UIR who were carrying out a field experience program in Pekanbaru in the 2023/2024 academic year. Data collection in this research used a questionnaire technique and the data analysis technique used a percentage test. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that the difficulties of PPG English Language Education FKIP UIR students in carrying out lesson opening activities were classified as low, the difficulties in mastering the learning material were classified as low, the difficulties in applying educational learning strategies were classified as moderate, the difficulties in applying the scientific approach were classified as moderate, the difficulties The use of learning resources and media is relatively low, the difficulty in involving students in learning is very low, and the difficulty in carrying out lesson closing activities is very low. Overall, the level of difficulty for English Language Education PPG students at FKIP UIR in carrying out PPL is relatively low with a difficulty which shows that PPG English language education students at FKIP UIR Pekanbaru Riau do not experience difficulties in implementing it.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the digital literacy and digital competence of teachers on teaching English and its effect. Quantitative data is the result of the correlational study in the form of a questionnaire on teachers' digital literacy and digital competence. Data processing is done by simple regression, multiple regression test and correlation test using spss version 25. The simple regression test results concluded that the literacy and competence of digital teachers on teaching English at SMKN 4 Pekanbaru are high scores. The coefficient of determination (R Square) of digital literacy and digital competence is 90.3 % and 85.4 %. Then, the effect concluded that T calc < T table ; 1,182 <4,302 and 0,567 < 4,302. According to the basis of decision making, it was concluded that the null hypothesis is accepted. it means that digital literacy and digital competence in teaching English are not significant.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of the reading literacy of deaf students, who are still relatively weak. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of local wisdom-based English reading teaching materials on improving the reading literacy of deaf students in class XI SMALB. This type of research uses a quantitative approach with an experimental research design. The sample for this study used the purposive sampling technique; the research sample was in class XI with 25 students. Data collection techniques include tests and documentation. Instrument testing uses validity and reliability. Data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis and pre-requisite tests, namely the normality test, hypothesis test, and N-Gain test. Based on data processing, the results of the study show that English reading teaching materials based on local wisdom effectively improve the reading literacy of deaf students. This is evidenced by the results of the sig value of 0.000> 0.05; thus, it can be said that there is an increase in reading literacy with local wisdom-based English reading teaching materials, which are in the high category, where the N-Gain value is 0.76.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to create a YouTube-assisted contextual-based e-module that functions as a pedagogical component that can basically be applied to improve speaking skills. Contextual learning provides tools for teaching that can be developed and designed in an innovative way to increase learning for all students. This contextual-based e-module incorporates YouTube as an integrated resource, offering lecturers a valuable tool to enhance their teaching with a wide range of engaging and relevant content. The videos available on YouTube align well with the instructional material, providing both interesting and practical support to enrich the learning experience. This study employed the Borg and Gall research and development (R&D) model, which consists of six stages: needs analysis, objective planning, and development of the initial product, preliminary field testing, main product revision, and main field testing. A total of 50 students from the English Language Education Study Program at the Universitas Islam Riau, who were enrolled in the Speaking for General Communication course, participated in the study. This research used a mixed-methods approach, utilizing tests, questionnaires, and interview guides as data collection instruments. The results show that students responded positively to the use of the contextual-based e-module, which effectively improved their speaking skills. The e-module was also found to be practical, engaging, and supportive of independent learning. Importantly, the findings indicate that the module fosters greater student responsibility and autonomy in their learning. These results have practical implications for classroom instruction, suggesting that the integration of multimedia and contextual strategies can significantly enhance speaking pedagogy in higher education.
