Abstract

There are several factors that influence problem-solving abilities including cognitive styles and learning models. This research aims to analyze the profile of students' mathematical problem-solving abilities with field dependent cognitive style and to test the achievement of classical learning completeness of students in solving mathematical problems with discovery learning models. The method used in this study is the mixed methods with concurrent embedded design. Data collection techniques were carried out using the Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) test, Problem-solving ability (TKPM) test, interview, and documentation. Based on the analysis of obtained data that in solving the problem with Polya's steps, field dependent subjects are able to understand the problem but still uses mathematical language that resembles the problem, unable to device a plan on a particular problem that requires deeper analysis, unable to carry out the plan properly on certain questions that require more analysis  and look back the answer but cannot correct the mistake and the learning with the discovery learning model achieves average score of 77.39 of classical completeness in solving problems with which is higher then the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) score of 65. Thus cognitive style is very important to be considered to determine the learning model that is suitable for students to be able to solve mathematical problems.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of project-based learning in improving concept understanding through the creativity of making zigzag books. This type of research is a mixed method research with concurrent embedded designs. The sampling technique in this study was conducted by purposive sampling technique. Research instruments in data collection using tests, observation sheets, product assessment, questionnaires, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used the Normalized Gain test, Kruskal Walls Test and Simple Linear Regression test. The results showed an increase in understanding of the concept from the results of the pretest-posttest of students as much as 0.38 belonging to the medium category. The creativity profile of students resulted in the creativity of students in the category of quite creative. The magnitude of the influence between understanding the concept and creativity is indicated by the coefficient of determination of 0.320 which implies that the influence of the creativity variable on understanding the concept is 32%. One of the benefits of project-based learning can be used as an alternative model for learning the 2013 curriculum and zigzag books can be used as projects resulting from the implementation of project-based learning. In conclusion, this project-based learning can improve students' conceptual understanding and creativity by making zigzag books.

Abstract

At present, there is still a lack of teaching materials in Elementary Schools, specifically science that is suitable to the needs of students and encourages students to care about their environment. The purpose of this study is to develop a Natural Sciences module with the STSE (Science, Technology, Society, Environment) approach to strengthen cognitive learning outcomes in Elementary Schools. The method used is the research development of the modified Borg and Gall model, namely preliminary studies, development stages, and evaluation stages. The research subjects were grade IV students, Public Elementary School Kangkung 1 Mranggen. Data collection instruments used were observation sheets, tests, questionnaires, and documentation. Analysis of research with t-test and n-gain test to determine the comparison of modules, as well as improvement of learning outcomes. The results of the study that the Natural Sciences module, with the STSE approach, is valid for use. The results of trials with the t-test show the difference between the use of modules and student books, N-gain module usage scores 0.723 with a very high category. The practicality test shows a practical module so that students and teachers can accept it. The Science Module STSE approach can be used as a substitute for teaching material on the theme of the environment around Grade IV Elementary School.
