Abstract

At present, there is still a lack of teaching materials in Elementary Schools, specifically science that is suitable to the needs of students and encourages students to care about their environment. The purpose of this study is to develop a Natural Sciences module with the STSE (Science, Technology, Society, Environment) approach to strengthen cognitive learning outcomes in Elementary Schools. The method used is the research development of the modified Borg and Gall model, namely preliminary studies, development stages, and evaluation stages. The research subjects were grade IV students, Public Elementary School Kangkung 1 Mranggen. Data collection instruments used were observation sheets, tests, questionnaires, and documentation. Analysis of research with t-test and n-gain test to determine the comparison of modules, as well as improvement of learning outcomes. The results of the study that the Natural Sciences module, with the STSE approach, is valid for use. The results of trials with the t-test show the difference between the use of modules and student books, N-gain module usage scores 0.723 with a very high category. The practicality test shows a practical module so that students and teachers can accept it. The Science Module STSE approach can be used as a substitute for teaching material on the theme of the environment around Grade IV Elementary School.

Abstract

Temperature measurement is important in various applications; therefore, various temperature sensors have been developed. Due to its advantages, many optical fiber-based temperature sensors have been proposed. The wavelength modulation-based optical sensor is interesting due to high accuracy. However, the complex fabrication process and high cost limit the advantages of the sensors. Therefore, we proposed a simple and low-cost Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensor using step-index plastic optical fiber (SI-POF). Performance characterization of the sensor to temperature variation is presented. The sensor consists of two tapers at several distances, forming an interferometer. The first taper was designed to be steep to allow excitation of cladding modes, while the second taper was gradual to suppress power loss. Characterizations were done in terms of sensitivity, hysteresis, and repeatability by analyzing the output spectrums recorded by the spectrometer at various environment temperatures, 35oC to 85oC, with an increment of 10oC. The results showed that the sensor has a sensitivity of 0.0431 nm/oC and a correlation coefficient of 0.9965. Hysteresis of 6.9×10-3 was observed. In terms of repeatability, the sensor shows a maximum deviation, ±3oC, which was mainly resulted from the fluctuation of the oven temperature. Despite its high deviation, the sensor has advantages of simple fabrication, low cost, robust, and low power loss, which make it a good candidate for temperature sensors.

Abstract

This study aims to describe teachers' perceptions of practicum in physics learning, the implementation and obstacles of implementing physics practicum in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic in the even semester of the 2019/2020 academic year and the odd semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. The research method is descriptive quantitative. The instrument used was a google form questionnaire. Samples were taken using simple random sampling technique, obtained 50 SMA / MA physics teachers in Central Java and East Java. The results showed that all teachers have the same perception that the application of practicum in learning physics is important. However, during the online learning period the teachers rarely applied practicum. Some teachers even argue that they haven't thought about how to implement online practicum. More than 50% of teachers have tried to do practicum during online learning. The types of practicum used are various, ranging from virtual laboratories, simulations, video demonstrations and hands-on. The implementation of practicum in online learning experiences various obstacles, both hardware (practicum material tools, computers / notebooks, smartphones, networks) and software, namely practicum procedures that are not understood by students and students' activeness control mechanisms.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a five-tier form of fluid misconception diagnostic assessment and to reveal the profile of student’s conceptual understanding in maritime-based schools in the city of Tegal. This study used a 4D model (defining, designing, developing, and disseminating). The sampling technique used purposive sampling. The research samples were Bahari Vocational School Tegal, Al Maarif Vocational School Tegal, and Nahdlatul Ulama Senior High School Tegal. Methods of data collection used documentation, questionnaires, tests, and interviews. Expert validation states that the instrument was valid, has good readability, was easy to understand, and the sentence structure was correct. The reliability of the instrument is 0.958 and declared reliable. A total of 39 questions were categorized as medium, and one question was easy. The discrimination power of the questions obtained was that 30 questions were accepted, eight questions were received with a little improvement, and one question needed improvement. Seventy student misconceptions were identified from seven fluid sub-concepts. The biggest misconception, as much as 46.5% was found in the buoyancy sub-concept, while the smallest misconception was found in the application of Pascal's law at 35.2%. The most dominant misconception is that the deeper a point in the fluid is, the greater the buoyancy. Students assume that the greater the depth, the greater the fluid pressure, so that the buoyancy force is greater. Students believe that buoyancy is influenced by fluid pressure. This misconception is influenced by conceptual appreciation and intuition in daily life.

Abstract

Learning materials are needed in the implementation of student learning activities to achieve learning success in accordance with the achievement of competencies. Preliminary studies showed that there was still a lack of learning materials development according to the students’ needs. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of science learning materials based on Project Based Learning with integrated STEM to improve students' creative thinking skills and teacher responses to the use of learning materials. The research method used was research and development (R&D) which included several stages, namely problem identification, data collection, design of science learning material using project-based learning with integrated STEM, design validation, design revision, small-scale trials, and big-scale trials. The results showed that the science learning materials developed were suitable for use, namely 3.87 categorized as a very valid category. Moreover, teacher responses obtained 97.33% (very good). Students have an increase in their creative thinking skills up to 0.37 (moderate). Therefore, the use of learning materials using project-based learning with integrated STEM becomes one of the best solutions to improve students' creative thinking skills.
