Abstract

Temperature measurement is important in various applications; therefore, various temperature sensors have been developed. Due to its advantages, many optical fiber-based temperature sensors have been proposed. The wavelength modulation-based optical sensor is interesting due to high accuracy. However, the complex fabrication process and high cost limit the advantages of the sensors. Therefore, we proposed a simple and low-cost Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensor using step-index plastic optical fiber (SI-POF). Performance characterization of the sensor to temperature variation is presented. The sensor consists of two tapers at several distances, forming an interferometer. The first taper was designed to be steep to allow excitation of cladding modes, while the second taper was gradual to suppress power loss. Characterizations were done in terms of sensitivity, hysteresis, and repeatability by analyzing the output spectrums recorded by the spectrometer at various environment temperatures, 35oC to 85oC, with an increment of 10oC. The results showed that the sensor has a sensitivity of 0.0431 nm/oC and a correlation coefficient of 0.9965. Hysteresis of 6.9×10-3 was observed. In terms of repeatability, the sensor shows a maximum deviation, ±3oC, which was mainly resulted from the fluctuation of the oven temperature. Despite its high deviation, the sensor has advantages of simple fabrication, low cost, robust, and low power loss, which make it a good candidate for temperature sensors.

Abstract

The absence of ideal characteristics from the use of practicum can be solved based on empirical data which makes the practicum more effective. Reality construction is a way of taking pictures based on what students get from practical experience. The purpose of this study is to identify indicators of reality construction formed by students in online practicums. The method used is a meta-analysis by reviewing 24 international journals. The data analysis used is quantitative data analysis with effect size and percentage, while qualitative data analysis is for data resulting from narrative studies of the studies encountered. Based on analysis study of reality construction indicators can be generated five indicators that often appear, which is conceptual understanding, relevance and contribution of laboratory activities, student satisfaction, interaction and laboratory work patterns, resources and instructional. Students' conceptual understanding can be increased by applying online practicum. More than 60% of respondents stated that the contribution of online practicum is the same or better than conventional practicum. Overall, students feel quite satisfied in accessing online practicum, especially satisfaction in terms of time. However, students have more difficulty collaborating in online practicums. Along with the development of digital technology can facilitate interaction by communicating virtually. In addition, adequate quality of resources and instructional resources are needed so that they can effectively frame student learning.

Abstract

The concept of diffraction and interference of light is one of the abstract concepts of physics. The process of light diffraction and interference occurs in the abstract. Learning about diffraction and light interference requires media that represent the events. Cognitive structures can represent the quality of students' understanding. Learning Physics is easier to understand through direct experience in the form of practicum. Abstract Physics concepts will be easier to learn with the appropriate visualization. One of the virtual practicums' media uses PhET virtual simulations to improve students' cognitive structure is measured using concept map questions and supported by description questions. The purpose of this research is to increase the cognitive structure of students by using PhET. This research is quantitative research and the experimental design used the experiment method. There are three groups in the experiment, that is a virtual simulation, a real practicum as an experiment class, and a control class. The results of the one-way ANOVA test on the concept map questions showed a significance value (p) 0.05, meaning that there were differences in cognitive structure between groups. The significance value (p) between the virtual simulation group and the real practicum group was 0.014, while the significance value between the virtual simulation group and the control class was 0.00, meaning that there was a significant difference in learning effectiveness between groups. Based on the data of the research concluded that physics learning assisted by virtual simulations can develop students' cognitive structures on the concepts of diffraction and light interference.

Abstract

Polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA)-based optical waveguide is a good candidate for a simple and low-cost waveguide. However, the thermal properties have not been investigated. In this work, thermal durability characterization of PMMA-based waveguide was carried out. Waveguide fabrication process was done in three stages, which are patterning the PMMA cladding, core material synthetization and core material application to the cladding. Core pattern with cross section area of 1×1 mm2 was engraved on the 4 cm long PMMA sheet. Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) was used as a core material. Characterizations were conducted for temperature dependent loss (TDL), temperature working range, and long exposure durability. For TDL characterization, the temperature varied from 30°C to 75°C. Meanwhile, for temperature working range, the waveguide was exposed to cycled heating. The thermal durability characterization was done by immersing the waveguide in distilled water at temperature of 40 °C for 288 hours. The results showed that a little change of output intensity occurred due to temperature variation with TDL of 0.0235 dB/°C. The maximum limit of the temperature is 70°C. For long exposure to temperature of 40oC, the results showed that the waveguide has a good performance.
