Abstract

Purpose – In response to the challenges posed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, enhancing lecturer competitiveness has become crucial to ensuring the sustainability of higher education quality in Indonesia. This study aims to empirically examine the influence of spiritual leadership, organizational culture, and self-efficacy on lecturer performance, with a particular focus on higher education institutions in Probolinggo Regency, East Java—an area previously underexplored in academic research. Design/methods/approach – This study employs a quantitative correlational approach involving 220 lecturers from ten higher education institutions in Probolinggo. Data were collected through a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 through the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method to assess the causal relationships among latent variables. Findings – The analysis reveals that all three independent variables—spiritual leadership (β = 1.330; p < 0.001), organizational culture (β = 1.588; p < 0.001), and self-efficacy (β = 0.503; p < 0.001)—have a significant impact on lecturer performance. The model demonstrates an R² value of 0.598, indicating that 59.8% of the variability in lecturer performance can be explained jointly by these three factors. Research implications – The findings have direct implications for higher education human resource development policies, particularly in fostering value-based leadership, strengthening adaptive work culture, and enhancing lecturers’ psychological capacity to promote sustainable academic performance.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to explore the implementation of the prophetic values of shiddiq (honesty), amanah (responsibility), and fathanah (wisdom) in the leadership of Islamic education in madrassas in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results of the study show that the value of shiddiq is realized through budget transparency, consistency of actions, and open policy delivery, which strengthens trust and fosters an honest work culture. The value of the mandate is realised through systematic supervision, competency-based task distribution, open reporting, and collective deliberation, resulting in a credible and accountable work system. Meanwhile, Fathanah is reflected in data-driven strategic decision-making, participatory dialogue, and wise responses to crises, which increase organizational efficiency and participation. These three values contribute significantly to building ethical, transformative, and benefit-oriented leadership. This research strengthens the position of prophetic leadership as a strategic framework in contemporary Islamic education governance, while offering an applicative model for the development of competencies of madrasah heads.

A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis at MA Negeri 1 Nganjuk. The findings show that the principal proactively develops strategic, emotional, spiritual, and digital intelligence, which contributes significantly to strengthening organizational culture, improving teacher performance, and enhancing the quality of learning for santri. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic educational leadership theory and broaden understanding of the role of adaptive intelligence in responding to contemporary challenges. The study concludes that developing holistic intelligence is crucial for madrasah leaders in the context of Islamic education and suggests that Kementerian Agama facilitate professional development programs focused on these aspects. The implications of this research include theoretical contributions to enriching the literature on transformational leadership in madrasah settings, practical implications for policymakers and education practitioners in designing more comprehensive leadership development strategies, and opportunities for further studies on the impact of collective intelligence and shared leadership within the madrasah ecosystem.
