Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools is still predominantly based on textbooks, resulting in the underutilization of the local environment as a contextual learning resource. Consequently, students have not yet gained meaningful learning experiences that connect scientific concepts with real-world phenomena in their surrounding environment. This study aims to analyze the potential of Lubuk Larangan in Merangin Regency as a contextual learning resource, examine the integration of ecosystem concepts and local wisdom into science learning, and explain its contribution to students' conceptual understanding, science process skills, and environmental awareness. The findings indicate that Lubuk Larangan functions as a natural laboratory that supports contextual learning through direct observation of river ecosystems, thereby enhancing scientific thinking skills, learning motivation, active participation, and appreciation of local culture. Its implementation requires the support of instructional materials, collaboration among stakeholders, and school policies to ensure sustainability. The novelty of this study lies in the development of a community-based natural laboratory perspective of Lubuk Larangan that integrates river ecology, ethnoscience, conservation practices, science learning, and character education.

Abstract

Character education among elementary school students is becoming increasingly complex due to social change, technological development, and weakening connections between students and local culture. Merangin local wisdom has the potential to serve as a foundation for contextual character education; however, research that conceptualizes it as an integrated ecosystem in elementary schools remains limited. This study aims to analyze the forms of Merangin local wisdom, mechanisms for integrating them into learning and school culture, family and community involvement, and supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation at SD Negeri 001/VI Bangko. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design through observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving the principal, teachers, students, parents, and community leaders. Data were analyzed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that values of mutual cooperation, deliberation, responsibility, care, politeness, and togetherness are transformed through culture-based learning, exemplary practices, habituation, cultural projects, and social activities. The novelty of this study lies in its conceptual model of local wisdom as a character education ecosystem integrating schools, families, communities, and responses to digital challenges.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum requires teaching materials that align with learning objectives, student characteristics, and school conditions; therefore, the feasibility of printed and digital teaching materials needs to be analyzed. This study aims to compare the feasibility of these formats in fourth-grade learning at SDN 002/VI Bangko based on content, language, presentation, graphics, facilities, and teacher practices. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving one teacher as the informant, while data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and triangulation. The results indicate that printed teaching materials are considered feasible and serve as the primary learning resource because they provide equitable access, are easy to use, can be reused, and do not depend on devices or internet connectivity, while digital materials are feasible as supplementary resources for concept visualization and stimulus variation, although their use remains limited. In conclusion, neither format is absolutely superior, as printed materials provide a foundation for accessibility and learning structure, whereas digital materials enhance visualization and learning variety; therefore, their selection should be flexible, contextual, complementary, and adapted to classroom needs.
