Abstract

The strengthening of globalization and the dominance of modern popular culture have contributed to the gradual fading of local cultural values, especially in rural areas that are rich in traditions. To respond to these challenges, community-based cultural events are used as an important strategy for cultural promotion and the development of sustainable tourism. This research aims to analyze the role of participatory communication in increasing tourism attraction and encouraging the advancement of Sundanese culture through the Pakuwon Earth Market event in Bantaragung Village, Majalengka Regency, focusing on its communication mechanisms, impacts, and strategies. This study uses a qualitative method, specifically a case study approach, in which data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three informants, participatory observation, and documentation studies, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that dialogical, open, and inclusive participatory communication can increase awareness of Sundanese cultural values and strengthen community involvement by presenting meaningful tourism experiences. In addition, participation plays a role in transmitting cultural heritage values orally and strengthening a collective sense of belonging. This research concludes that participatory communication is an effective strategy for linking cultural advancement with the development of community-based cultural tourism and provides both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of sustainable tourism communication.

Abstract

Background. The evolution of video games as a complex narrative medium has raised new challenges regarding players’ interpretation of characters. Aims. This study examines the phenomenon of “mischaracterization”—that is, errors in understanding and representing characters resulting from a partial or distorted reading of the narrative—within the player community of Genshin Impact, an action-RPG developed by HoYoverse that delivers its story episodically through periodic updates. Methods. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Potter’s (2021) Media Literacy Theory framework—which encompasses the dimensions of access, analysis, evaluation, creation, and self-awareness (personal locus)—this study collected data from an online questionnaire administered to 44 active players. Result. The results reveal patterns of imbalance in media literacy competencies: respondents demonstrated relatively high abilities in accessing information and awareness of the industry’s commercial motives, yet their conceptual analysis skills (distinguishing between canon and fanon) and reflective awareness of personal bias were low. These findings reinforce the view that media literacy is multidimensional and cannot be generalized based on a single competency dimension alone. Conclusion. This study also highlights that mischaracterization is not merely a matter of individual cognitive deficits but is also influenced by the episodic narrative structure of the games themselves, as well as the pressure for convergence of opinion within the participatory culture of online communities.

The research method used is qualitative with a literature study approach for data collection and analysis. The results show that Instagram plays a significant role in every stage of the innovation diffusion process, including: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. Optimizing Instagram features, using communicative language, and emphasizing the concrete benefits of the program proved effective in encouraging innovation adoption. This study contributes to the understanding of the application of innovation diffusion theory in the digital era and the effectiveness of social media as a strategic instrument in sustainable community development.

Abstract

Culture is a way of life that develops and is shared by a group of people, which is passed down from generation to generation. Tarawangsa is one of these cultures and is a medium of cultural expression that contains traditional values that must be continuously preserved so that they are not lost to the times. However, with the development of the digital era and modern popular culture, the authenticity of the meaning and spiritual function of Tarawangsa has begun to erode, because the younger generation has easier access to global digital entertainment and less respect for traditional values. This study aims to understand the symbolic meaning of Tarawangsa art, analyze the younger generation's understanding of the symbolic meaning of Tarawangsa, and analyze the spiritual meaning in Tarawangsa that has been eroded in the younger generation. In this study, the method used is a descriptive qualitative method by conducting in-depth interviews with artists, namely Abah Abun and field observations to gather information about the younger generation's understanding of Tarawangsa art. Based on the analysis using Semiotic theory, Tarawangsa art has a deep meaning in the lives of Sundanese people. The results of the study indicate that the younger generation's understanding of the symbolic meaning of Tarawangsa is still limited and tends to be superficial.
