Abstract

ABSTRACTSmoking is commonly viewed as a masculine practice, particularly among men. This attitude persists among today's youth, who see smoking as a sign of maturity and masculine identity. This community service activity attempts to enhance adolescent understanding of the dangers of smoking while also dispelling the favorable image of smoking that is frequently connected with masculinity. This activity also improves assertive communication skills by teaching English terms for declining requests to smoke. The method employed is Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), which emphasizes active collaboration among researchers, facilitators, and participants throughout the process. A total of 19 mosque youth from Masjid Jami’ Al-Muttaqin, Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, participated in a series of community service activities, including interactive lectures, discussions, and conversation simulations. Data were collected through observation and participant satisfaction questionnaires. The results showed a very positive response; the majority of participants expressed satisfaction to very satisfaction with the material, speakers, and activity facilities. All participants (100%) expressed interest in participating in similar activities and demonstrated an increased understanding of the dangers of smoking and the ability to refuse invitations to smoke assertively in English. This activity also changed participants' perceptions of smoking, from a behavior perceived as a symbol of masculinity to a habit detrimental to health. The integration of health education and assertive communication has been found to help encourage healthy behaviors and dispel unfavorable attitudes toward smoking among adolescents. Keywords: Community-Based Research; Community Service; Smoking Behavior; Assertive Communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of illocutionary speech acts, determining the most dominant type, and realization lyrics in the album Being Funny in a Foreign Language by The 1975. This study uses a qualitative method with Searle’s (1979) theory of speech acts as the main framework. The results showed that four main types of illocutionary acts were found, namely expressive, assertive, commissive, and directive. Expressive acts are the most dominant with around 40,14%, as the lyrics often express sadness, happiness, longing, regret, complaining, anger, and blaming. Then followed by assertive around 38,03%, directive around 13,38%, commissive around 8,45%, and no declaration speech acts are identified in this data analysis. The illocutionary acts are expressed implicitly, using poetic and symbolic language styles. These findings highlight how song lyrics function not only as artistic expression but also as meaningful communication tools within the field of pragmatics. Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the practice of real-time or synchronous written corrective feedback (SWCF) delivery via Google Docs as a platform to deliver feedback, known as a linguistic feedback tool (LiFT) in ESP (English for Specific Purposes) classes, students’ preferences and viewpoints of SWCF. The research employed a qualitative case study involving 15 students from an advanced English correspondence course in a non-English department of a private university in Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Open-ended questionnaires, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews were used to gather the data. The findings revealed that auto-generated and human feedback are used to deliver SWCF via Google Docs, inferring that those features can build students' awareness of language aspects, content, and context in composing professional documents. Direct feedback was delivered more frequently, regarding the learning time efficiency and the students’ ability to identify errors. Further, the students preferred frequent SWCF, direct and indirect feedback, and correcting delivery methods. Finally, they considered that SWCF delivered via Google Docs assists them in improving letter accuracy. Their preferences and viewpoints might allow the lecturer to choose appropriate feedback delivery strategies and material reinforcement. The present research implies a balanced use of auto-generated and human feedback from LiFT in SWCF delivery. Evaluating the effectiveness of SWCF delivery via Google Docs for different levels of achievers in ESP classes might be a potential area of future research. Other LiFTs’ infusion into ESP classes is also worth researching to provide language instructors with alternative applications for SWCF delivery.
