Abstract

This research aims to explore and describe the social phenomena of urban adolescents represented in the novel Marmut Merah Jambu by Raditya Dika. The novel, categorized as humorous autobiographical fiction, has gained immense popularity among young readers. This study seeks to reveal the forms of representation of urban youth life, including lifestyle, communication patterns, and social dynamics presented in the novel. The research employs a qualitative approach through content analysis method, supported by a sociological literary approach as its theoretical foundation. Data are analyzed based on narrative observations, dialogues, and language use within the text. The findings reveal that the novel reflects the social realities of Indonesian urban youth, characterized by a consumerist lifestyle, digital communication, fluid romantic relationships, and identity struggles. These elements are conveyed through humorous and reflective narratives. The use of popular language and code-switching serves as a narrative strategy to construct an authentic urban youth atmosphere.

Abstract

In the modern era full of moral challenges, literature is present as an effective means to instill moral values. One of the literary works that contains a strong moral message is the novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. This study aims to reveal the forms of moral education contained in the novel using qualitative descriptive methods and content analysis. The results of the study show that this novel is full of Islamic moral values ​​that are reflected through the characters, plot, and story conflicts. Values ​​such as honesty, patience, responsibility, sincerity, and respect for others are the main focus. The character Fahri is described as a personal representation of Muslim ideals who is able to be a role model in calmness and action. Therefore, Ayat-Ayat Cinta not only functions as a work of entertainment, but also as a medium for inspiring and relevant moral learning, especially for the young generation of Muslims. This research is expected to be a contribution to the development of character education through literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the song "Selalu Ada di Nadimu" by Laleilmanino using the mimetic approach in literary criticism. The mimetic approach views a work of art as a reflection of social reality and human experience, so this analysis focuses on how the song’s lyrics represent the emotional relationship between parents and children as well as the strong family values in Indonesian society. The song is considered a reflection of the creator’s personal experience as well as a broader social reality, especially regarding the hopes and prayers of parents for their children to remain strong in facing life’s challenges. The method used is qualitative descriptive with content analysis of the lyrics as the main data. The results show that "Selalu Ada di Nadimu" functions not only as an aesthetic work of art but also as a medium of social reflection conveying moral messages and real-life values through symbolism and metaphors in its lyrics. Thus, the song reinforces the function of music as a communication tool capable of portraying and strengthening the social and emotional experiences of its listeners.

Abstract

Based on the results of the study, the application of the Mind Plus strategy using event picture media proved effective in improving students' poetry writing skills. Through the processes of observing pictures, asking questions, developing ideas, and composing poems, students became more creative, systematic, and directed in expressing their feelings and thoughts into literary works. The use of visual media as a stimulus helped students more easily find main ideas and enriched their imagination in choosing diction, building atmosphere, and forming aesthetic poem structures. The implication of these results indicates that the Mind Plus strategy assisted by visual media is feasible to be implemented in poetry writing instruction at school. This strategy can create a more active, enjoyable, and motivating learning atmosphere, encouraging students to be more confident in producing creative works. Teachers are expected to adopt this method to optimally develop students' literacy skills, thereby making poetry writing learning more contextual, inspiring, and relevant to the development of students' creativity.

Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate that creative writing, particularly in the form of poetry, can serve as a powerful and effective medium for social criticism. The focus of the study is the poem Peringatan (“Warning”) by Wiji Thukul, written in the context of political repression during Indonesia's New Order regime. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a literary social criticism approach, the analysis examines each stanza of the poem, which delivers a sharp warning regarding the imbalanced relationship between the people and those in power. The findings show that the poem reflects creative aspects through its direct diction, symbolism of resistance, and rhetorical structure that poignantly exposes social and political realities. Through this work, Wiji Thukul voices the people’s frustrations against silenced aspirations and authoritarian control. Thus, “Peringatan” becomes a form of creative expression as well as an ideological weapon against structural injustice.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relevance of the main character's traits in the short story Sri Sumarah by Umar Kayam to the values of everyday life, particularly within the framework of a patriarchal culture that shapes and restricts women's roles. Utilizing Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminist perspective, the study employs a qualitative descriptive method combined with content analysis to explore and interpret the character of Sri Sumarah. The findings reveal that women are often idealized for their sacrifices, which, in reality, are manifestations of gender inequality and the suppression of individual autonomy. Female identity is constructed through social norms dictated by patriarchal structures. The characterization of Sri Sumarah is profoundly relevant to contemporary life, especially in relation to modern women who are increasingly expected to demonstrate independence and psychological resilience. Despite societal and cultural limitations, she retains the freedom to make decisions that shape her life. Her determination and ability to endure in challenging situations demonstrate that women can define the meaning of their own lives without depending on societal recognition or patriarchal definitions. The values presented in Sri Sumarah, such as patience, sincerity, perseverance, and self-reliance, can inspire contemporary women to face life’s challenges with greater strength and independence. Thus, this short story not only teaches moral values but also offers a new perspective on understanding women's struggles within broader social and cultural contexts.

Abstract

The novel Jejak Langkah by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is a novel that contains strong moral values, especially those related to the struggle against oppression, freedom of thought, and social responsibility. Through the main character, Minke, he experiences significant moral development along with the socio-political dynamics that surround him. Through the characters and storyline, this novel shows how moral values ​​are shaped by life experiences, education, and awareness of injustice in colonial society. The moral aspect in the novel Jejak Langkah is very important because it describes the growth of character and the shift in values ​​experienced by the main character as a representation of the colonized people who are beginning to rise intellectually. The results of the analysis show that this work not only raises historical aspects, but also provides deep reflection on the importance of struggle, courage, justice, strong principles and a critical attitude towards power. Thus, Jejak Langkah becomes a literary work that not only has aesthetic value, but also educational value that is relevant in the context of character education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the style of language in the symbolism of the sunset in the novel Sunset Bersama Rosie by Tere Liye using a stylistic approach. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with documentation techniques to identify quotations containing sunset symbolism. The results of the analysis show that the use of the style of language in the symbolism of the sunset in the novel Sunset Bersama Rosie by Tere Liye plays an important role in describing the emotional journey of the main characters, namely Rosie and Tegar, who face the process of loss, healing, and sincerity. Through the use of rich language such as metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, paradox, imagery, repetition, poetic diction, and contextual symbolism. Tere Liye not only uses the symbol of the sunset as a background element but also as a means to convey deep feelings of the heart. The sunset symbolizes sadness, hope, and acceptance, and shows that every ending provides space for a new, more peaceful beginning. Through the symbol of the sunset, the novel Sunset Bersama Rosie by Tere Liye invites readers to reflect on the cycle of life and the potential for resurrection that arises from every loss.

Abstract

This study attempts to explore more deeply the poem "Aku" by Chairil Anwar through an expressive approach introduced by M.H. Abrams. In this approach, literary works are understood as a direct reflection of the poet's soul closely related to life experiences, emotions, and his perspective on the world. The poem "Aku" was chosen because it is one of Chairil Anwar's most iconic works that expresses the spirit of individualism, resistance, and the search for identity. By using qualitative methods and a descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the exploration show that this poem is a strong self-expression and describes the poet's desire to live freely and not be bound by social norms or time constraints. This poem represents the poet's strength and resilience in facing difficulties and wounds, as well as the rejection of social norms that limit individual freedom.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal and analyze the cultural values contained in the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck by Hamka. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method to examine the representation of Minangkabau culture in the story. The results of the study conclude that the novel is rich in cultural values, especially those of Minangkabau, and highlights the conflict between traditional and modern values. The Minangkabau society is depicted as deeply rooted in customs, including a matrilineal kinship system and a strong family role in matchmaking. Cultural values influence social values, as reflected in the strong social hierarchy between the aristocracy ("blue-blooded" nobles) and common people. Social conflict between social status values and personal values (such as love, education, and morality) becomes the central theme. The love between Zainuddin and Hayati is tested by cultural pressures but remains emotionally eternal as a reflection of loyalty, sacrifice, and true love despite their separation. The novel emphasizes the importance of justice, modesty, and valuing individuals based on character rather than lineage or wealth. It strongly criticizes social inequality rooted in unjust cultural norms, while highlighting noble values such as education, loyalty, and morality. Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck is a reflection of the struggle between tradition and human conscience.
