Abstract

This article, using historical and ethnographic methods, explores the maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, Supiori Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Historically part of the Biak-Numfor and Supiori islands, Supiori became a separate district in 2003 under Law No. 35 of 2003. The Biak people in Sowek Village, who identify as the Sowek people, have lived in the Aruri Archipelago of Supiori Island for centuries. While their language and culture are part of the Biak-Numfor cultural family, their identity is rooted in their specific geographic location. Supiori Regency is predominantly oceanic and covered by mangrove forests, with only 25% of its land being dry. This landscape has shaped the Sowek people's reliance on marine resources and maritime trade. Contact with the outside world began long ago, facilitated by maritime trade and headhunting expeditions to Maluku, Ternate-Tidore, and the Raja Ampat Archipelago. The Sowek people navigate these waters using traditional boats such as the Wairon, Waimansusu, and Karures, guided by advanced astronomical knowledge of constellations like Orion (sawakoi) and Scorpion (romanggwandi). The maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, still preserved as a historical heritage, includes traditional fishing with nets, the cultivation of mangosteen (aibon), blacksmithing (kamasan), and the ecological conservation of mangrove forests, which serve as both fish habitats and natural fortifications for the village.

Abstract

The maritime industry is a cornerstone of global trade, responsible for transporting over 90% of the world’s goods. However, the 21st century has brought both new opportunities and unprecedented challenges for the sector. With the continued growth of global trade, rapid technological advancements, and shifting geopolitical dynamics, the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to adapt and innovate. Key challenges include the need for sustainability in the face of environmental concerns, such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, marine pollution, and biodiversity loss. Technological advancements, such as automation, digitalization, and the adoption of green technologies, offer promising solutions but also pose operational and regulatory hurdles. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in strategically important regions like the South China Sea, add further complexity to the security and stability of global shipping routes. Furthermore, the evolving expectations of governments, businesses, and the public demand the maritime industry prioritize environmental responsibility, workforce welfare, and safety. This paper explores these challenges, outlines the expectations for the maritime sector, and identifies the key directions that will shape the future of the industry, emphasizing the role of innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices. A comprehensive understanding of these dynamics is crucial for stakeholders to navigate the complexities of the modern maritime environment and ensure the industry's resilience and growth in the coming decades

Abstract

The development of technology is inseparable from the role of humans as creators of culture; technology is a product of creation and human initiative. Technology produced by humans has both positive and negative impacts on humans themselves. The negative effects of this latest technological invention are often used to over-exploit nature and make it easier for humans to meet their daily needs. Awareness of the importance of preserving nature by realizing green behavior or life-friendly behavior towards the environment can be started from the formal education pathway from elementary school to university. To realize awareness about green behavior, knowledge and competence in Environmental literacy are needed. Environmental literacy competence relates to head/mind or aspects of knowledge (learning to know), heart/hand skills (learning to do), and spirit / spiritual (learning to live together). Environmental literacy aims to build a community that agrees on how to understand conceptual ecology in the practice of special education in elementary schools. In addition, it is also an environmental literacy to realize pedagogical processes that are based on local wisdom and directly require the participation of the community in its implementation. The purpose of the research was to improve ecoliteracy in fifth-grade students of Mekarsari State Elementary School, Bogor Regency, West Java. The research used a classroom action research method with 21 fifth-grade students as research subjects. Data collection techniques were carried out by interview, observation, and documentation. The model of interactive qualitative data analysis techniques was conducted to analyze the research. The results of the research showed that the science, technology, and society model could improve the eco-literacy of students of Mekarsari State Elementary School, Pulo Merak, Cilegon from 70 to 76

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the adaptation strategies of farmers in a village on the slopes of Semeru, specifically in Wono Cepoko Ayu Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, which has long been recognized as a coffee cultivation area, namely Kolesem (Kopi Lereng Semeru; Semeru Slope Coffee). In 2014, farmers preferred to plant Balsa Wood and then returned to planting coffee from 2018 to 2023. Therefore, this article analyzes three main issues, namely, the reasons why farmers easily switched from planting coffee to Balsa Wood in 2014, factors that encouraged them to return to planting coffee during 2018-2023, and the impact of the transition on farmer welfare. This study emphasizes the socio-historical aspect with an economic sociology approach, enhanced with rational theory, and applies historical methods. The results of the study show that the transition to Balsa Wood is driven by its high economic potential, which leads to an increase in farmer welfare, such as land purchases and house renovations. However, a virus outbreak in Balsa Wood forced farmers to return to coffee cultivation and adopt intercropping methods to support their economy. This situation highlights that such adaptation remains essential to support farmer welfare and underlines the importance of flexibility in dealing with economic changes and agricultural challenges.
