Abstract

This research aims to analyze the challenges of future agricultural production in terms of water scarcity and the availability of agricultural land while exploring strategies that can be applied to address these challenges. The study employs a systematic literature review approach with a sample of 30 journals from various developed and developing countries. These journals span publication years from 2000 to 2021. Further investigation by reading the abstracts of each selected journal was conducted to ensure their relevance to the research objectives. The research findings indicate that water scarcity and the availability of agricultural land are significant factors influencing the sustainability of agricultural production. The absence of these inputs can have a substantial impact on meeting global demand. Factors such as extreme climate change, land conversion, population growth, and increased demand for agricultural products contribute to water scarcity and the limited availability of agricultural land. Strategies employed to address these issues involve a combination of policy measures and environmental prevention and adaptation strategies, such as wastewater and saline water management for irrigation, the use of superior crop varieties, changes in crop intensity, improved weather forecasting for farmers, and crop diversification. Moreover, to combat the shrinking availability of agricultural land, several strategies can be implemented, including optimizing land-use intensity, increasing the crop yield index, and formulating policies related to land-use conversion. Abstract

The Pengulu Tribe in Limun District, Sarolangun Regency, Jambi Province, has long used the fruit of *Scaphium macropodum*—locally known as "merpayang" or "mempayang"—as a traditional medicine. *Scaphium macropodum* belongs to the Sterculiaceae family and has a broader distribution compared to its seven subspecies. This study investigates the ecology of *S. macropodum* to provide initial information on its use by the Pengulu Tribe, as well as the population and habitat conditions in Sarolangun Jambi's production forest. The study aims to estimate the population of *S. macropodum* in the forest and analyze the ecological factors influencing its habitat. Conducted between December 2023 and January 2024, the research utilized observation, interviews, and literature review methods, with data analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. Ecological factors were examined using the Importance Value Index (INP), diversity and evenness indices, community similarity index (Ward method), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The study identified 47 species from 18 tree families within the *S. macropodum* habitat. The dominant species in two research sites, APL NM and HA DM, were *Shorea parviflora* (meranti). At HL DT and APL DM, the dominant species were *Shorea multiflora* (squirrel coconut) and *Canarium* sp. (mosquito legs). The Shannon-Wiener diversity analysis indicated moderate diversity and evenness across the four sites. APL NM and HA DM had significant community similarity (90.81%), while APL DM had a lower diversity index compared to the other sites.

Abstract

Abstract Rodent pests remain one of the major constraints to the productivity and sustainability of smallholder oil palm plantations in Muaro Jambi Regency. Farmers commonly rely on chemical pesticides, which pose risks of environmental contamination, pest resistance, and health hazards. This community engagement program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, emphasizing active involvement of farmers in every stage, including problem identification, socialization, construction of barn owl nest boxes (gupon), release of Tyto alba, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The results demonstrated that the installation of a single gupon covering 30 hectares reduced rat populations by approximately 28% within three months, decreased crop damage rates from 18.5% to 11.2%, and lowered pesticide use from 12.5 liters/ha/year to 10 liters/ha/year (a 20% reduction). Consequently, pesticide costs declined from IDR 2,500,000/ha/year to IDR 2,000,000/ha/year, while fresh fruit bunch (FFB) productivity increased from 15.8 tons/ha/year to 16.4 tons/ha/year (an improvement of 3.8%). These findings confirm that the application of Tyto alba is a promising, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly biological control strategy. The novelty of this program lies in integrating ecological and economic aspects through a PAR-based conservation model, which not only improves productivity and cost efficiency in smallholder oil palm farming but also strengthens farmer institutions. This model has the potential to be replicated in other smallholder plantation areas with similar characteristics. Keywords: biological control; tyto alba; oil palm productivity; sustainability; smallholder oil palm.
