Abstract

ABSTRACTWaste is residue from activities carried out by humans. Residue is one of the causes of environmental damage. Garbage is also found in the school environment. The school environment is an environment that needs to be maintained so that learning activities run well, smoothly and conductively. Concern for the school environment becomes the formation of the character of students. The knowledge possessed by students will be more helpful if implemented. Thus, the community service team carried out community service activities with the theme "Utilization of Beverage Bottles (Plastic Waste) as Media Containers for Horticultural Commodity Cultivation Plants with the 3R Approach (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)". This theme was raised because schools generally have managed waste, but the management that is carried out is generally only in the form of an appeal to "dispose of waste in its place. Based on the pretest and post-test results, it is known that the student's knowledge has increased. The activities on the second day went well; the team and students planted mustard greens using used drinking bottles. The mustard greens planted by the students were taken to the homes of each student to be cared for so that the plants developed well. After 30-40 days, the plants can be harvested. Keywords: service; management; reduce reuse recycle; waste.

Abstract

Coffee is the main commodity in the plantation industry which has a major impact on the economy. This research aims to analyze comparative and competitive advantages in coffee production. The analytical method used is the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) Model. The results of the analysis show that the price elasticity of countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and Indonesia, which are the main source countries for coffee exports, is negative. In contrast, Honduras has positive price elasticity. Thus, if there is an increase in coffee bean exports on the global market, it is estimated that demand for coffee beans from Colombia and Honduras will increase.

Abstract

Sustainable development goals now include efforts to achieve economic prosperity for people while complying with international agreements. Evidence has shown that the agricultural sector plays an essential role in driving the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of North Sumatra Province in 2022. The plantation crops sub-sector is the most significant contributor to the agricultural business sector. Coffee, an excellent agricultural commodity, is essential in developing neighboring regions. There are many small coffee plantations in North Sumatra, and local communities highly depend on its production. Arabica coffee development should be based on the capacity and prospects of the commodity in the region. The objectives of this study are to (1) describe the main areas where small-scale Arabica coffee producers operate in North Sumatra Province; (2) analyze the distribution patterns of small-scale Arabica coffee producers in North Sumatra Province; and (3) determine the extent to which Arabica coffee producers contribute to regional development. A descriptive-quantitative methodology was used in this study. Information was obtained from secondary data sources for the period 2019-2021. Location quotient (LQ) analysis, specialization, and localization analysis, primary service ratio (BSR), and regional multiplier (RM) analysis were used for data analysis. The analysis results show that Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, and South Tapanuli are the significant regions in the region.

Abstract

One of the SDGs for the process of coffee production and consumption through partnerships is SDGs 12 and 17. SDGs 12 relates to Responsible consumption and production and SDGs 17 relates to partnerships for the Goals. Efficient management of waste management is an important target for achieving SDGS 12 goals to move towards a more sustainable consumption pattern by 2030. Abstract

Introduction: The community's behavior, perceptions, and willingness to pay (WTP) are vital in forming and implementing integrated waste management. Thus, zero waste theory advocates the need for research on perceptions, behavior, and WTP for school waste management. This study analyzes school residents' perceptions, behavior, and WTP regarding waste management. Methods: This study used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study was conducted at SDN Betahwalang, selected purposively due to its active waste bank program. A total of 86 students and 75 school community members were surveyed. Quantitative data were analyzed using crosstabs and the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. Results and Discussion: This study used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design. The research was conducted at SDN Betahwalang, purposively selected for its active school waste bank program. The variables measured included students’ socio-economic characteristics, perception, environmental behavior, and willingness to pay for waste bank development. A total of 86 students and 75 school community members were surveyed. Data were analyzed using crosstabs and the Contingent Valuation Method, supported by qualitative insights from in-depth interviews. Conclusion: This study concludes that integrating environmental education through both formal and non-formal approaches effectively improves students’ knowledge, perception, and behavior toward waste management. Furthermore, the school community shows strong support for waste bank development, as indicated by their willingness to pay. These findings highlight the importance of institutional synergy and continuous environmental education in promoting sustainable waste practices in schools.
