Abstract

There are several interesting things about the Tablighi Jamaah (hereinafter referred to as JT) movement. This interesting phenomenon includes, first, the da'wah method. JT's preaching method is considered unique and contradictory by some laypeople. In his preaching method, it is necessary to leave the family for a certain time. So this method requires members to leave work and family. This, of course, has an impact on the family's livelihood and productivity. Meanwhile, earning a living for the family is considered a sharia obligation. This is the first contradictory and unique condition. However, on the other hand, this co-contradictory condition is followed by other conditions. No method of preaching exceeds the speed carried out by JT. Suddenly, after going out (khuruj) for 3 days, he suddenly became a brother of worship and regretted his sins in the past. This condition of spiritual change certainly cannot be carried out by individuals or other religious organizations. This event only occurs in the JT tradition.

Abstract

This research carries the theme of the development of Islamic historiography in Indonesia with a focus on the methods of writing Islamic history, the influence of traditional literature, and other relevant topics. The development of Islamic historiography in Indonesia through historical research methods namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography collected by researchers from various sources such as books, articles, and similar studies that discuss the theme of Islamic historiography in Indonesia. In the context of writing Islamic historiography in Indonesia, the writing method can be divided into two things, namely first, Islamic history is an inseparable part of the history of Muslims globally and holistically. Second, Indonesian Islamic historiography is understood as an integral part of Indonesian national history. Variations of Islamic historiography writing in Indonesia are manifested in various forms such as hikayat, khabar, silsilah and tambo. Topics of study in Indonesian Islamic historiography include local history, multidimensionality, and biographies of national figures. Historians try to reconstruct the history of Indonesian Islam by taking various sources from traditional historical records, Dutch colonial records, and modern historiography.

Abstract

The Book of Manaqib of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani, published in 2011, by Ajid Thohir, offers a significant contribution to the study of Sufi historiography by illuminating a genre that is often neglected in Islamic historical scholarship. Focusing on the hagiographic narratives surrounding Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani—a central figure in the Qadiriyya Sufi order—the book systematically examines the various versions and traditions of Manaqib literature, highlighting their role in shaping religious identities and spiritual practices among Muslim communities, particularly followers of the Qadiriyya-Naqshabandiyya orders. Using historical research methods, the study analyzes the structure, authorship, and epistemological foundations of several key Manaqib texts, arguing that these works are not only important sources for understanding the development of Islamic historiography but also serve to strengthen communal ties within the fiqh and Sufi traditions. The book shows how the Book of Manaqib functions as more than a record of miraculous deeds and virtues; It is an influential vehicle for spreading Islamic values, fostering piety, and cultivating collective memory in various Muslim societies.

Abstract

Jama’ah Tabligh (JT), a global Islamic revivalist movement, experienced an unprecedented internal conflict that shattered nearly a century-long tradition of organizational harmony. A significant leadership rift emerged, splitting the movement into two factions: the Nizamuddin-based MS (Maulana Saad) group and the Pakistan-based SA (Syuro Alami) faction, led by Sheikh Abdul Wahab. Over time, noticeable differences in characteristics developed between the two factions. These distinctions became particularly evident in Parongpong, though similar patterns emerged in other regions. The distinction between Syuro Alami (SA) and Maulana Sa'ad (MS) in Parongpong—and more broadly across Indonesia—is observable in several key dimensions. In terms of numerical strength, the MS faction holds clear dominance. This article explores the internal conflict’s local impact, particularly in Parongpong, West Bandung, and examines the broader consequences stemming from the leadership division in India and Pakistan. This study employs a historical method encompassing heuristic, critical, interpretive, and historiographical stages. It draws on oral sources—collected from 2015 to 2023 through informal conversations and interviews with JT members in West Java, especially Parongpong and Bandung—and written materials including the Buku Musyawarah Halakoh and publications from tablighi-jamaat.com. The conflict's roots involve differing views on leadership structures, spiritual allegiance (bai‘at), missionary methods, and theological interpretations. The SA group, often more digitally engaged and scholarly, contrasted with the orally oriented MS followers. The conflict has had profound implications for JT’s internal social structure and its global reach. In Parongpong, the rift manifests in disrupted religious routines and divided loyalties. This study contributes to understanding the organizational dynamics of Islamic movements and the sociological consequences of internal fragmentation. It offers valuable insights for religious scholars and policymakers into how spiritual authority is contested and redefined in a transnational religious context.

Abstract

Islamic historiography constitutes an intellectual legacy that plays a vital role in shaping the identity and historical consciousness of the Muslim community. One of the key figures in this tradition is Ibn al-Athir (1160–1233 CE), best known for his monumental work, al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh. This work not only records historical events chronologically but also presents a narrative construction rich with theological, moral, and political dimensions. This study aims to examine Ibn al-Athir’s historiographical method in al-Kāmil, focusing on his writing approach, sources used, as well as his editorial and narrative interpretation strategies. Employing the historical research method (heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography), this research draws on al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh (Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah edition) as its primary source, utilizing a historiographical approach. The study finds that Ibn al-Athir applied the principles of tadhkirah (remembrance), ṣaḥīḥ (authenticity), and tāmm (completeness) in his historical writing. Furthermore, the findings reveal a deliberate strategy of omission concerning politically and socially sensitive parts of the narrative. Thus, al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh emerges as a model of Islamic historical writing that combines factual accuracy with meaning-making, significantly contributing to the development of both classical and contemporary Islamic historiography. This work remains relevant as a primary source and as a critical object of study for understanding the dynamics of Islamic historical writing across eras. Through a deep understanding of Ibn al-Athir’s historiographical method, this study seeks to contribute to the advancement of contemporary Islamic historiography.

Abstract

This research focuses on the typology of mosques in the Bandung area, Indonesia. Due to its close ties to Islam, research on mosque typology is still limited. This mosque holds significant value within the Muslim community. This research was conducted in Greater Bandung: Bandung City, Cimahi City, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and Sumedang Regency. This study employed qualitative methods (Creswell, 2008) with descriptive research characteristics. Using the Bandung Grand Mosque as a reference, as suggested in previous studies, the results show that the dome-shaped roof element is a dominant feature replicated by mosques in Greater Bandung. Other elements, such as columns, openings, and roof ornamentation, are also replicated by several research subjects, but to a lesser extent. This research provides a broader overview of the area, with a more diverse analysis of factors such as time, socio-cultural, and technological aspects.
