Abstract

The people of Cirebon have various religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. However, they can live harmoniously in such diversity. Cirebon is interesting to explore due to its abundant culture-based tourism. However, in the tourism industry, the process of commodification is inevitable as part of current development. Therefore, this study employed a qualitative method using historical, social, and cultural commodification approaches expected to provide a better overview and information regarding culture-based tourism in Cirebon. The commodification of culture allows cultural forms to be a tradable commodity. It changes culture as originally a social relationship into culture as an economic relationship. Thus, it is important to apply historical and social approaches in the study to determine the existence of cultural heritage. This encourages the researchers to further discover the extent to which commodification is implemented in the culture-based tourism industry in Cirebon, aiming to provide information to the public to give more attention as well as participate in preserving cultural heritage in the midst of the challenges of modern times. The results of this study show an overview of cultural tourism in Cirebon, in which various elements of society are expected to help preserve and maintain culture as self-identity.

Abstract

This paper delves into the realm of cultural intelligence inherent in Japanese and Indonesian idiomatic expressions. In the context of intercultural communication, Indonesian speakers utilize diverse cultural intelligence frameworks to express various facets of Japanese culture, with language serving as a prominent component. While a plethora of studies have examined idioms from semantic and semiotic perspectives, a notable gap exists in the literature regarding the exploration of cultural intelligence within idiomatic expressions in both languages, encompassing both structural and semantic analyses. Filling this research void, the present study aims to elucidate the concept of cultural intelligence, specifically focusing on the comprehension of Japanese and Indonesian idioms, particularly those related to the notion of "face". Employing a descriptive research approach, data comprising 16 Japanese idioms and 13 Indonesian idioms were meticulously examined to unveil the cultural significance within each group. The idioms were sourced from various dictionaries and specifically focused on expressions related to body parts, especially the face, which are commonly employed in everyday life. These idiomatic expressions were systematically classified into three categories and subjected to comprehensive analysis. The findings reveal that the majority of the idioms convey emotions, personal characteristics, and concepts of honor, thereby reflecting both cultural similarities and differences between Indonesian and Japanese cultures through idiomatic expressions. This study sheds further light on the intersection between cultural intelligence and idiomatic language, enhancing our understanding of how culture influences language use and interpretation.

Abstract

Sintren art is a traditional art that developed in almost all coastal areas of the island of Java. In Majalengka, sintren art developed in Mirat Village, Leuwimunding District. Sintren as a traditional art grew among rural communities that were becoming modern so sintren then survived as a traditional performing art that had an influence on the social life of the community. This research was carried out using qualitative research methods which are believed to be a scalpel in research so as to help explain the research object factually. Data collection techniques were carried out by direct observation and interviewing sources. The results of this research show that sintren in Mirat Village is not only a traditional art that was initially performed in ceremonies or rituals, but also a traditional performing art that can be performed during circumcision celebrations, weddings, and welcoming guests who come to the village. There has been a shift in sintren performances, currently sintren can be performed anytime and anywhere depending on the enthusiasm and demand of the community, because currently the values contained in this sintren performing art are no longer closely tied to a ceremony or ritual alone. Sintren art absorbs the cultural values of the community so Sintren performing arts have become part of the culture of the Mirat community.

Abstract

This historical research examines the messages conveyed through the architectural art of an ancient mosque, the Cirebon Panjunan Red Mosque, which was built by Arab descendants living in Java in 1480 AD. In Indonesia, the acculturation between Islamic culture and traditional values resulted in the uniqueness of mosques' architectural buildings and ornaments. In addition to being a place of worship, mosques became an art form rich in symbols, representing historical, religious, and philosophical values. This qualitative research with historical methods seeks to investigate the visual narrative in the ancient mosque by implementing a series of historical research stages, including heuristics, criticism, and data interpretation. As pictures convey a narrative as well as words, visual narrative can be used to discover the values of the past. The results of the research have unveiled messages of history and culture regarding Islam's development during the Cirebon sultanate. In addition, the history of the Panjunan Red Mosque was described. Hopefully, this research can contribute to new knowledge on the past Islamic development in Indonesia and the wisdom of peaceful acculturation.
