Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate the "Redi: Sang Sel Pelayar" storybook series as an educational tool for pediatric cancer patients, enhancing their understanding of cancer and improving treatment adherence with age-appropriate content. Using Sugiyono's R&D method, the study progressed through defining, designing, developing, and disseminating stages. Five types of childhood cancers were addressed: leukemia, retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma, neuroblastoma, and nephroblastoma. This study demonstrates that illustrated storybooks are effective in helping children understand cancer and related medical processes. The storybooks, tailored to specific cancer types and age groups with adapted characters, make it easier for children to grasp their condition. The overall average score of our readability questionnaire was 3.9, which means that our book is categorized as readable (3.4 < Mean > 4.2 = Readable). There was also a significant increase in post-test scores after the children underwent intervention by reading storybooks (P: 0.015; 95% CI 0.013–0.018). Evaluations showed significant increases in children's knowledge after reading the books, along with positive changes in their behavior and understanding of cancer. The implications for pediatric oncology care are significant, suggesting that culturally relevant educational tools can reduce anxiety and improve adherence. Despite the promising findings, the study was limited by a small sample size and a lack of long-term effect measurements. Future research should focus on larger samples and longitudinal studies to better assess the impact on adherence and well-being. Overall, the "Redi: Sang Sel Pelayar" series offers a novel approach to pediatric oncology education, with potential applications for other chronic illnesses, proposing a valuable addition to standard pediatric care practices.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the factors that promote and hinder youth's mental health during the pandemic. A total of 151 participants (79% female) aged 18-30 years completed an online survey included open-ended questions about their friendship experience. Thematic analysis using an inductive approach yielded several themes. Social support, communication, quality time, openness, emotional bonds, empathy, guidance, and advice were identified as relational aspects that promote mental health. Lack of social support, ineffective communication, emotional and physical distance, and conflicts were identified as relational aspects hindering mental health. Toxic relationship tendencies, such as judgment and imposition, were also considered detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, personal aspects such as integrity in friendship were perceived as positive for mental health, while certain negative personality traits, negative feelings, and thoughts were seen as harmful. The way young people define supportive friends versus "toxic" friends can differ across contexts other than pandemic.

Abstract

This study utilized Twitter data to examine narratives related to psychosocial responses to the impacts of COVID-19 among Indonesians, which were further discussed in the context of coping strategies. We collected and analyzed tweets containing coping-related trending hashtags, namely #Covid-19, #coronavirus, #lockdown, #dirumahsaja (stay at home), #newnormal, #pakaimasker (wear a mask), #amandirumah (safe at home), #vaksin (vaccine), #ppkm (referring to the micro-lockdown term), #coping, and the keyword “mental health.” A total of 24,502 tweets were collected from three distinct periods: the Early COVID-19 Emergency Responses Phase, the New Habit Adaptation Phase, and the Early Mass Vaccination Phase, using a Python-based library. After filtering out duplicate and irrelevant tweets, a total of 6,265 tweets were subjected to deductive content analysis procedures. This study found that Indonesian Twitter users more often tweeted narration related to problem-focused coping strategies during the three periods of COVID-19 in Indonesia, followed by seeking social support in the first and the third periods, while cognitive coping was the second most strategy in the second period. Informational sharing, problem-solving strategies, and criticism were the three most forms of problem-focused coping strategy. Calls or appeals and social support seeking was the most form of social coping strategies. The forms of cognitive coping were finding meaning or reflection, views, and optimism. This study implies the exploration of the speech-act psychology, the intersection of psychology, communication, and even technology to understand how individuals and communities adapt to crises. The findings also inform public health communication strategies, social media governance, and mental health interventions aimed at mitigating the impacts of crises.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a program to increase pro-environmental awareness, knowledge, and behavior among students at SMAN X in Makassar using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. GREAT began with preparation, socialization, and environmental ambassador (EA) inauguration, then continues with program implementation which consists of five pro-environmental activities, namely Collecting Inorganic and Organic Waste, Cool with Reusable Stuff, Nature Gift Day, Planting and Watering a Tree to Support Green Nature, Upcycling Unused Stuff. After the implementation, a closing ceremony and program evaluation were held through FGD and self-reflection form. Overall, despite certain shortcomings that require attention for future programs, GREAT has effectively heightened awareness, knowledge, and redirected students' intentions toward pro-environmental actions not only in school but also in family and public environments. Additional endeavours are necessary to overcome challenges identified in the planning and execution of forthcoming interventions in other contexts.

Abstract

Ethnic minorities and indigenous people are two of the many groups at high risk of being stigmatized in society because of their identity. Such stigmatization might have diverse psychological and social impacts. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of stigma experienced by ethnic minority students and their responses to it. This study was descriptive qualitative research involving 12 participants aged 18–30 from East Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi, who had studied and lived in Yogyakarta for at least one year. Thematic analysis with an inductive approach resulted in three grand themes according to research questions: forms of stigma, coping strategies, and efforts to minimize stigma. Findings indicate that the stigma experienced by students was classified as stereotypes and negative treatment in both academic and non-academic contexts. Participants' responses to cope with the stigma were mainly related to four types of coping: problem-focused, emotion-focused, cognitive coping, and avoidance. There are three key areas of improvement that can reduce the occurrence of stigma in ethnic minority groups, namely self-development, relationship development, and institutional development (e.g., education and community). This research provides insights for key stakeholders, such as families, educational and youth institutions, and the media, to formulate interventions aimed at reducing stigma that may have negative psychosocial impacts on individuals and groups at both the individual and community levels.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the right moments to comprehend people’s understanding of mental health topics is through World Mental Health Day (WMHD). This study aimed to explore themes related to mental health that are the conversation topics on Twitter as social reactions to WMHD 2021. We collected and analyzed Indonesian tweets that contained #WMHD or Mental Health keywords. From October 1 to 23, 2021, a total of 12,500 tweets were collected utilizing tweepy and request, a python programming-based library. Data cleaning processes left 7,126 tweets to be further analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. This study found seven themes from the most to the least frequently discussed, namely (1) positive mental health, (2) social network and social capital, (3) mental health literacy, (4) stressful events, (5) material economic well-being, (6) mental illness and (7) physical wellbeing. This research showed that social media has the capacity to investigate users’ knowledge and perception which might then serve as the foundation for providing relevant mental health education on various platforms to support the improvement of community well-being. Furthermore, knowing the topics of mental health-related conversations on twitter can be a precursor to the development of a measurement tool related to mental health understanding.
