Abstract

The use of ethnopharmaceutical practices remains widespread in Bali, as this knowledge has been passed down through generations. Although the Balinese people still strongly uphold their traditional healing systems and have long utilized plants as medicinal ingredients, there is still limited research documenting the diversity of plant species recorded in the Usadha manuscripts along with their therapeutic uses. This study aimed to inventory medicinal plants that are still used by the community in Banjar Saraseda, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. The study employed a descriptive design, with data collected through interviews to obtain information from respondents regarding local plant names, therapeutic uses/indications, parts of the plant utilized, and methods of preparation and application. The data were analyzed descriptively and presented in tables. Based on the ethnopharmacological survey conducted in Banjar Saraseda, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali, a total of 20 medicinal plant species were recorded. The most frequently used plant parts were leaves (75%), followed by rhizomes (15%) and fruits (10%). The primary methods of preparation included boiling (65%), pounding (15%), grating, crushing, brewing, and direct use (each 5%). Based on therapeutic indications, the plants were mainly used to treat fever (20%), muscle pain and gout (20%), hypertension (20%), skin itching (10%), diabetes (10%), and to manage wounds, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, and gastritis (each 5%). This study demonstrates that the Banjar Saraseda community in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali continues to preserve traditional knowledge in the use of medicinal plants that has been inherited through generations.

Abstract

Bay leaf is one plant that has benefits as traditional medicine, acting as an antioxidant with flavonoid content. The processing is still very simple, which has an impact on the short shelf life of the herb. One alternative to prevent this is to formulat e bay leaf extract into effervescent granule preparations, which provide a more comfortable feeling with a large concentration of active substances. This study aims to determine the difference in the physical quality of effervescent granule preparations wit h variations of effervescent salts and to determine the concentration of acids and bases that produce effervescent granules of bay leaf extract with good physical quality. In 3 effervescent granule preparation formulas, the variation in acid and base concentrations (citric acid, tartric acid, and sodium bicarbonate) is F1 by 9.4%; 18.7%; 27%, F2 by 8.6%; 17.2%; 29%, and F3 by 7.9%; 15.8%; 31%. Physical quality evaluation of effervescent granule preparations includes organoleptis, flow velocity, rest angle, disperse time, pH, and moisture content. Quantitative data were analyzed with the One Way Anova test to determine the difference in physical quality of the three effervescent granule preparation formulas. Based on the results of physical quality tests, the three greenish-white granule formulas were obtained, the characteristic smell of bay leaf extract, and the granule form with a flow speed of 10 g / second, a stati onary angle in the range of 31-35 °, a dispersion time of < 5 minutes, a pH in the range of 5-6, and a moisture content of < 5 minutes. The results of One Way Anova testing found that the three formulas with variations of effervescent salts have different physical qualities, and acid-base concentrations that produce good physical qualities, namely F1 and F3

Abstract

Papaya fruit contains secondary metabolite compounds such as saponins. The secondary metabolites needed in soap production are saponins. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of ethanol extract of papaya fruit (Carica papaya L.) with concentrations of 2.4 and 6% in solid soap preparations can produce good physical quality and to determine the difference between formula 0 (without extract) and formula I, II and III (with extract concentrations of 2, 4 and 6%) in the physical quality obtained. This research is an experimental study, starting with making extracts formulated into solid soap form with variations in extract concentrations of 2.4 and 6%. The soap produced is white in formula 0 and formula I with an aria fragrance aroma. In contrast, formula II is yellow and formula III is orange with the aroma of papaya fruit ethanol extract and in the four formulas obtained a solid preparation. The homogeneity test results on all formulas are homogeneous. The pH test results obtained the lowest pH value in formula II and formula III with a pH value of 9 while the highest pH value was obtained in formula 0 with a pH value of 11. The test results of the height and stability of the foam obtained the highest foam height in formula III (7.43 cm) with foam stability of 66.82% while the lowest foam height was obtained in formula 0 (6.23 cm) with foam stability of 78.59%. The results of the physical quality test show that the soap meets homogeneous criteria, pH ranges from 9-11, has a foam height of 1.3-22 cm and foam stability between 60-90% in accordance with the requirements of SNI No. 3532-2016.

Abstract

White turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria) is a medicinal plant that Indonesian people widely use as a treatment for a disease. This plant is processed by blending it and serving it as a traditional medicine. However, the method of processing which is still very traditional allows errors in processing to make the efficacy of white turmeric not optimal, besides that the preparations that are processed cannot be used for a long time. Granule is a solid dosage form intended for oral use, the advantage of this preparation is the flexible dosage weight which allows for the formulation of large amounts of active ingredients such as most extracts. This study aims to obtain white turmeric ethanol extract granules with varying concentrations of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, namely 1%, 3%, and 5% which have good physical quality. The test results from this study showed that the physical quality of the preparation was good, in which the organoleptic preparation obtained was light yellow, smelled of orange aroma, and granular form. The granule compressibility test of the three formulas complied with the requirements because it was <20%. The granule flow rate test showed that the three formulas met the requirements, namely >10 gram/second. Test angle of repose of the three formula granules meet the requirements> 40o. The granule soluble time test showed that the three formulas met the requirements, namely <5 minutes and the granule water content test of the three formulas met the requirements, namely <5%. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) binders with concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5% produced good granules.

Abstract

Red dragon fruit skin (Hylocereus lemairei) contains flavonoid compounds (polyphenols), and vitamins C and E which play the main role as antioxidants, so they are good for moisturizing, nourishing, and maintaining skin health. Lip balm is a cosmetic preparation with main components such as waxes, fats, and oils from natural or synthesized extracts to prevent dryness by increasing lip moisture. The stability of preparation is very important in maintaining the physical quality of the preparation until it reaches the consumer. This study aims to determine the concentration of Cera alba as a stiffening agent needed to produce lip balm preparations of red dragon fruit skin extract (Hylocereus lemairei) with good physical quality. The response observed was the physical quality of the lip balm preparation which included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, and mechanical strength of the lip balm. Data analysis was carried out descriptively. This research begins with the extraction process of red dragon fruit skin using an ultrasonic wave-assisted maceration method using 96% ethanol and 1% HCl. In this study, a lip balm formulation was made from red dragon fruit peel extract with various concentrations of Cera alba 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3) as a stiffening agent. The resulting preparations were stored for 28 days, and their physical quality was observed. The results showed that lip balm preparations F3 produced good physical quality of lip balm preparations during storage. Dragon fruit peel extract can be properly formulated using Cera alba at a concentration of 15% to become a lip balm preparation that has high-quality physical characteristics and has the potential to be developed into a cosmetic preparation that is able to maintain skin moisture, especially the lips.

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure can cause various skin disorders, including sunburn, erythema, premature aging, wrinkles, pigmentation changes, and DNA damage, which may lead to photocarcinogenesis. Sunscreens play an important preventive role against these harmful effects, yet synthetic organic and inorganic agents may cause skin toxicity. Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) leaf extract contains phenolic compounds with dual photoprotective properties as antioxidants and UV filters. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a sunscreen cream containing ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves. The formulation varied the concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine as emulsifiers. Physical properties (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, and spreadability) and in vitro activities (antioxidant by DPPH method and SPF by spectrophotometry) were assessed and compared with commercial creams. The results showed that the cream formulation containing 4% stearic acid and 2% triethanolamine exhibited the most ideal physical characteristics compared to commercial products. The breadfruit leaf ethanol extract cream demonstrated weak to moderate antioxidant activity, while at a concentration of 400 ppm, it exhibited sunscreen protection categorized as maximum protection. The ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves has the potential to be developed into a natural sunscreen formulation that is safe and environmentally friendly.
