Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest maritime countries in the world. Learning should be carried out contextually by linking knowledge with contexts relevant to students' daily lives, such as the maritime context. This research is descriptive to determine students' initial understanding of the basic concept of static fluids. This research involved 66 first-year students in biology education as research subjects. The data collection technique used in this research is a test that uses 6 questions that represent the concepts of density, hydrostatic pressure, and buoyant force. Data was analyzed descriptively, quantitatively and qualitatively. The research results show that many students still experience problems understanding the basic concepts of static fluids, including density, hydrostatic pressure, and buoyant force. This indicates the need for implementing learning that can improve students' understanding of basic concepts of static fluid and enable them to link their knowledge with conditions and situations related to the maritime context in their daily lives. One of the effective approaches to address this issue is implementing a problem-based learning model. This study highlights the importance of contextualized general physics instruction to bridge students’ experiential and conceptual understanding, especially in maritime-based learning contexts.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe students' mathematical critical thinking abilities as seen from their learning interest. The approach used is a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. This research was conducted in February 2024 at SMP Negeri 13 Tanjungpinang. The research subjects consisted of 1 student from each learning interest category so that the number of subjects was 5 students. The data collection techniques used were questionnaires, tests and interviews. The instruments needed in this research are researchers and are supported by learning interest questionnaires, mathematical critical thinking ability tests and interview guidelines. The data will be analyzed using data collection and conclusion stages in accordance with the Miles and Huberman analysis technique. The data obtained shows that mathematical critical thinking skills with a very high learning interest category are able to fulfill 4 indicators of mathematical critical thinking. then the mathematical critical thinking ability with the high learning interest category is able to fulfill the 4 categories of mathematical critical thinking but is still not complete and precise. Furthermore, critical thinking skills in the moderate learning interest category were only able to fulfill 2 categories while the other 2 categories were not fulfilled. Mathematical critical thinking ability in the learning interest category is only able to fulfill 1 indicator out of 4 indicators of critical thinking ability. And mathematical critical thinking abilities in the very low learning interest category only fulfill 1 of the 4 indicators of mathematical critical thinking abilities.

Abstract

Abstract Mathematical critical thinking ability (MCTA) plays a crucial role in problem solving and reasoned decision-making, yet many students still struggle with fraction problems, particularly in providing justification, evaluating strategies, and drawing conclusions. This study aims to examine junior high school students' mathematical critical thinking ability in solving fraction problems using a mixed-methods approach. Unlike previous studies, this research integrates qualitative analysis with the Graded Response Model (GRM) to provide a more comprehensive profile of students' critical thinking ability. The participants were 27 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through a mathematical critical thinking test, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using the GRM and thematic analysis with methodological triangulation. The findings indicate that most students demonstrated moderate to high levels of mathematical critical thinking. Students with higher ability demonstrated stronger reasoning, justification, and reflection, whereas students across all ability levels struggled to evaluate solution strategies and draw conclusions. These findings highlight the importance of instructional practices that foster mathematical reasoning, evaluation, and justification.
