Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the potential of bioactive compounds contained in the Senggugu plant (Clerodendrum serratum) as a traditional medicinal plant useful in traditional medicine. This research is a systematic review of the literature with data search using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Inclusion criteria included research related to Clerodendrum serratum, research articles, and published in the last 10 years. From the initial search results of 61 articles, 8 relevant articles were selected for further analysis and it was found that various parts of the plant, especially roots and leaves, contain active compounds such as ursolic acid, flavonoids, saponins, and silver nanoparticles, which exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antarthritic properties. Laboratory and in silico studies support the effectiveness of the compound in inhibiting the activity of inflammatory enzymes and proinflammatory cytokines, such as COX-2 and TNF-α, which are involved in inflammatory processes and other chronic diseases. This therapeutic potential suggests that Senggugu can be a safe and natural alternative in the treatment of various diseases, while supporting efforts to utilize local plant resources to improve public health.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the degenerative diseases that requires long-term management to maintain stable blood glucose levels. The side effects of conventional antidiabetic drugs have prompted the search for alternative therapies that are safer and more effective. Orthosiphon stamineus (commonly known as Java tea or cat’s whiskers), a herbal plant well-known in Indonesia, contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that have potential antidiabetic properties. This article aims to review the potential of Orthosiphon stamineus in lowering blood glucose levels through a literature review of previous research findings. The method used is a literature review by searching databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed using keywords like "Orthosiphon stamineus", "antidiabetic", and "blood glucose." A total of seven relevant scientific journals published between 2015 and 2023 were selected based on topic relevance, full-text accessibility, and the use of both in vitro and in vivo tests. The study results show that Orthosiphon stamineus leaf extract significantly reduces blood glucose levels, inhibits the α-glucosidase enzyme, and enhances GLUT4 translocation and insulin secretion. Conclusion: Cat’s whisker extract (Orthosiphon stamineus) has been proven to significantly reduce blood glucose levels through mechanisms of GLUT4 enhancement, insulin secretion, and α-glucosidase inhibition in diabetic animal models. Further research is recommended to confirm its effectiveness and safety in humans.

Abstract

The high prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Indonesia, such as periodontal disease, malaria, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, highlights the need for safer and more affordable alternative therapies. One promising natural source is mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), which contains xanthone compounds with diverse biological activities. This study aims to review the potential of xanthones from mangosteen pericarp extract as active drug candidates. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by searching articles in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases using relevant keywords including “xanthone” and “Garcinia mangostana.” Eligible articles were selected based on inclusion criteria (2014–2024, full-text availability, relevance, and reputable indexing). From 221 identified studies, 9 key articles were analyzed in detail. The findings reveal that xanthone compounds exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antimalarial, antidiabetic, anticancer, cardioprotective, anti-Alzheimer’s, protective effects against oxidative stress in keratinocytes, and potential COVID-19 therapy through ACE2 and Mpro blockade. These results suggest that xanthones from mangosteen peel hold great potential to be developed as active compounds in modern herbal medicines. Nevertheless, further studies, particularly clinical trials, are required to validate their safety and efficacy.
