Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to improve mathematics learning outcomes through the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) learning model online and susdut material in grades VII-6 of SMP Negeri 1 Tapa totaling 20 people using the class action research method.  The data collection techniques used in this study are teacher conservation, student observation and student learning outcomes covering three domains, namely affective, psychomotor, and cognitive shutter. The results of data analysis showed an increase in mathematics learning outcomes in the good and very good categories with a percentage of 87.50% for teacher activities, 89.47% for student activities, and for learning hasl each affective domain reached 89%, psychomotor realm 85% and affective realm 90%. The implication of this research is that it needs the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) learning model in improving mathematics learning outcomes.

Abstract

Mathematics is a fundamental science that plays an important role in developing students' logical, critical, and analytical thinking skills. One of the main competencies in mathematics learning is conceptual understanding, but international evaluation results and field findings show that this ability is still relatively low, especially in the subject of integer operations. This study aims to analyse students' mathematical concept comprehension skills in integer operations in Grade VII at SMP Negeri 1 Suwawa. The study used a quantitative descriptive method conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Suwawa, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo, with 21 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of an eight-question essay test that had been validated and reliability checked, as well as semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis techniques through the calculation of mean scores, standard deviations, and percentages, then grouped into high, medium, and low categories based on four concept understanding indicators. The results showed that 67% of students were in the medium category, 19% in the high category, and 14% in the low category. The indicator of recalling concepts was the most mastered by students, while the indicators of selecting procedures and applying concepts in problem solving were the most challenging. These findings indicate that most new students have mastered procedural understanding but have not yet achieved deep conceptual understanding. Therefore, learning strategies that emphasise meaningful activities and the use of various representations are needed to improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts.

Abstract

This study originated from empirical observations showing that junior high school learners demonstrated limited capacity in resolving mathematical tasks, especially those related to the Pythagorean Theorem, a condition assumed to have a strong association with the degree of students’ mathematical self efficacy. This investigation applied a descriptive qualitative design that emphasized an in depth case study framework. The participants involved six learners from class VIII A at SMP Negeri 1 Tomilito who were intentionally chosen using purposive criteria from an overall population of 23 students. The information required for the study was obtained by administering a self efficacy questionnaire, conducting a mathematical problem resolution assessment, and carrying out structured interviews. The results revealed that learners possessing high self efficacy demonstrated systematic problem resolution and fulfilled all indicators proposed by Polya. Learners with moderate self efficacy showed weaknesses in planning and precision, whereas those with low self efficacy experienced obstacles in comprehending problems and were unable to finalize solutions. Overall, the findings confirm that mathematical self efficacy affects students’ levels of mathematical problem resolution ability.
