Abstract

Kappaphycus alvarezii is a crucial species for carrageenan production, widely used in various industries. This review aims to synthesize global research on the cultivation of K. alvarezii, focusing on growth dynamics, nutrient management, and biochemical composition. Studies show that growth rates are significantly influenced by cultivation methods, such as longline, raft farming, and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), each offering distinct advantages in terms of yield and ecological sustainability. Nutrient management, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus level, plays a critical role in optimizing both biomass and carrageenan quality. The use of biostimulants and fertilizers has been found to enhance growth and biochemical properties, yet careful nutrient control is essential to prevent negative environmental impacts such as eutrophication. Genetic diversity, particularly through the selection of wild versus cultivated strains, is another important factor in farm resilience. Wild strains provide greater environmental adaptability and disease resistance, while selected strains typically offer faster growth and higher yields. However, the reduced genetic diversity in clonal farming raises concerns about long-term sustainability. Research gaps identified include the need for long-term studies on the sustainability of farming techniques, particularly in the context of climate change, and more extensive investigations into the ecological and economic benefits of IMTA systems. Future research should focus on integrating biological, ecological, and economic aspects to optimize K. alvarezii farming and enhance its contribution to the blue economy

Abstract

This research aims to explore the relationship between initial seed weight and RNA/DNA ratio in Gracilaria verrucosa, a seaweed with high economic value. Using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), four different initial seed weights (50 g, 75 g, 100 g, and 125 g) were tested, and the RNA/DNA ratio was measured at the end of the 49-day cultivation period. The results showed that lighter seedlings (50 g/bundle) had the highest RNA/DNA ratio, indicating higher metabolic activity, while heavier seedlings (100 g/bundle and 125 g/bundle) showed a decrease in the RNA/DNA ratio, indicating a decrease in metabolic flexibility. These findings highlight that in larger fry, there is a shift in energy allocation towards maintenance rather than metabolic processes. The variability in heavier fry (125 g/batch) underscores the necessity for additional research to elucidate the factors influencing these disparities. This research contributes to aquaculture practices by showing how seedling weight affects growth and metabolic activity. Understanding this relationship can lead to more efficient seedling management and better cultivation results. Further research is needed to explore the interaction of environmental factors and genetic variation with seedling weight to optimize cultivation strategies.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of different substrate types on the growth rate, agar content, and carbon uptake of Gracilaria verrucosa seaweed in ponds. The research method used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three substrate treatments, namely sand (100%), mud (100%), and a sand-mud mixture (50:50), each with three replicates. The parameters measured included absolute growth, specific growth rate, agar content, and carbon uptake. The results indicated that the sand-mud substrate treatment provided the highest growth of 108 g and a specific growth rate of 2.83% per day. However, there were no significant differences between treatments in agar content and carbon uptake (P > 0.05). These findings indicate that mixed substrates are more effective in increasing biomass growth but do not significantly affect biochemical quality. This study provides an important basis for the management of seaweed cultivation substrates for production efficiency and environmental contribution through carbon sequestration.
