Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the construction of meanings in gender-related verses within al-Baḥr al-Madīd, a Qur’anic exegesis authored by Ibn ‘Ajībah, through the lens of feminist hermeneutics. The research is motivated by the paucity of scholarship that bridges Sufi epistemology and Islamic feminist discourse, particularly in exploring the interplay between ẓāhir (literal) and bāṭin (inner) meanings in Sufi interpretations of verses addressing relations between men and women. Utilizing a qualitative-descriptive methodology with a textual analysis approach, this study examines Ibn ‘Ajībah’s interpretive framework alongside the epistemological foundations underpinning his exegetical method. The analysis centers on the influence of Sufi spiritual values—such as spiritual equality, purification of the soul, and respect for human dignity—in shaping the interpretation of gender-related verses and their potential to facilitate more inclusive readings concerning women’s rights. The findings reveal that the ishārī approach employed by Ibn ‘Ajībah foregrounds ethical and spiritual dimensions that enable non-hierarchical reinterpretations of gender-related verses. Nonetheless, these interpretations remain engaged with ẓāhir meanings, which are informed by the social context and scholarly traditions of his era. This study demonstrates that Sufi exegesis constitutes a significant alternative framework for advancing gender equality discourse within Qur’anic studies, while simultaneously broadening the scope of Islamic feminism to encompass Sufi spirituality.

Abstract

This study explores the multidimensional concept of hijrah in the Qur’an through the perspectives of two contemporary exegetes representing the Sunni and Shia traditions: Muhammad Quraish Shihab (Tafsir al-Mishbah) and Nāṣīr Makārim Shīrāzī (Tafsir al-Amṯāl). Employing a qualitative library-based approach and a cross-mazhab thematic tafsir method, the research aims to uncover how both scholars interpret hijrah as a relevant social and spiritual transformation. Findings indicate that both exegetes view hijrah holistically, encompassing physical movement, social struggle, and inner purification. Shihab emphasizes hijrah as moral and societal renewal toward an inclusive and ethical community in the Indonesian context, while Shīrāzī highlights its spiritual dimension as an inner jihad against egoism and injustice. Despite doctrinal differences, both use similar analytical and literary-social methods, demonstrating a convergence on hijrah as a timeless call for ethical transformation and social justice. This cross-mazhab approach enriches Qur’anic scholarship by bridging sectarian perspectives and offering practical implications for contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the concept of libâs at-taqwâ in the Qur’anic perspective as a response to the social reality of Muslim dress in Indonesia, which is often understood merely in its outward form. The notion of piety clothing is frequently associated with ritual attire, yet in practice it has undergone meaning distortion, commercialization, and neglect of its spiritual essence. Using a thematic (mawḍū‘ī) tafsir approach through library research, this study focuses on Tafsîr al-Mishbâh by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsîr al-Azhar by Hamka, particularly on Surah al-A‘râf/7:26. An analysis of their exegetical methods reveals different emphases: Quraish Shihab regards inner clothing as the true attire in Islam, while Hamka underscores outward clothing in accordance with the sharia as a concrete manifestation of inner piety. The Qur’an presents libâs at-taqwâ as a symbol of inner submission reflected through ethics, modesty, and spiritual awareness. This study highlights five forms of its implementation in modern life: as a symbol of self-awareness, an expression of moderation and aesthetic balance, a means of social and ethical protection, an Islamic identity in plural society, and a medium of da‘wah. Thus, libâs at-taqwâ must be understood holistically, integrating both inward and outward dimensions in harmony with Qur’anic guidance.

Abstract

This article explores the basics of moderation excavated from the verses of the Qur'an, which can be used as the epistemology of education in Islam. The critical value of this study is the critique of the epistemology of modern Western education, which ignores metaphysics as an approach and study in epistemology. Through this article, the author wants to make a description of the human ontology and its axiology from the perspective of the Qur'an as an epistemological foundation in education. It is urgent to do this because the basics of educational epistemology cannot be separated from the human perspective on ontology and axiology. Through the analysis of the verses of the Qur'an, it is illustrated that humans are created in moderation. The dimensions inherent in the reality of human ontology- such as exoteric-esoteric, physical-spiritual, physical-metaphysical, individual (private)-social aspects- are given serious attention by the Qur'an and placed in their respective positions. Another interesting discussion in this article is a description of the ethical-axiological values of a moderate Al-Qur'an perspective, such as the influence of morality, family, worship and prayer on the development of human physical and spiritual aspects. Regarding the research approach, this article can be called a thematic interpretation study because the author tries to collect the verses of the Qur'an in a specific theme and then examines the interrelationships between these verses to produce a general concept.
