Abstract

Looking at the times, humanitarian problems have developed so complex, ranging from genetics, space exploration, education, interfaith relations, gender issues, human rights, and so on. The rapid development of the times makes Islamic sciences inevitably have to follow the flow of the times, and without exception the science of interpretation. The science of interpretation is required to always develop in the face of the complexity of humanitarian problems. It was here that the idea of the use of hermeneutics became a necessity for today's interpreters. Hermeneutics as a methodology in the interpretation of the Quran is considered quite important and urgent to do because hermeneutics does not only speak at the level of the text alone but also considers the context and role of subjectivity of an interpreter, so that by using the method of hermeneutics, interpretation or study of the Quran is expected to be able to become an actual contextual and answer the challenges of the times. The problem in this study is how Muhammad Syahrul's hermeneutic method in interpreting Quranic verses about Polygamy. The purpose of the study was to know and analyse Muhammad Shahrur's hermeneutics in interpreting Qur'anic verses about polygamy. The research method used in writing this paper is a qualitative research method through library research or literature review method using descriptive analysis writing method. The results showed that using his Limit Theory (Nadzariyah al-Hudud), Syahrur tried to reconstruct the understanding of polygamy by using quantity and quality standards together. In terms of quantity, the minimum standard limit for a person to marry is once (one wife), and the maximum limit is four wives. Islam allows a person to marry 4 (four) people together (polygamy), but in quality it is necessary to distinguish between the status of the first wife and the status of the second, third and fourth wives. For first wives (first marriages) one can marry a woman who is a virgin or widow whether or not she has children, but in a second, third, and/or fourth marriage (polygamy), the wife must be widowed and have orphans. So one cannot marry all one's wives in virgin condition, but on the contrary it is quite possible one marries wives who are all widows. This is in accordance with the main purpose of polygamy, which is to provide protection and protection and ensure the welfare and happiness of orphans living in intact families so as not to become homeless and avoid juvenile delinquency.

Abstract

Sufi tafsir is a form of interpretation of verses from the Qur'an carried out by Sufis, with a focus on the dimensions of Sufism both in the practice of 'amalî and aspects of nazharî. This research reveals the history of Sufi interpretation and the essential differences between two styles of Sufi interpretation, namely nazharî and 'amalî Sufi interpretation by exploring the epistemology of Sufism in the interpretation process because the author highlights the inaccuracy of general understanding in detailing the fundamental differences between these two styles of Sufi interpretation. The aim of the research is to contribute to a deeper understanding of Sufi interpretation styles and help to detail fundamental differences in the context of Sufism epistemology. By using library research methods and a qualitative approach, the research results show that based on Sufism epistemology, the explanation of levels of meaning in Sufi interpretation is based on extracting meaning (the context of discovery) and explaining meaning (the context of justification). The distinction between the Sufi nazharî and 'amalî interpretation styles lies in the context of justification and the presence of esoteric and exoteric meanings. As for the context of discovery, both are based on mukâsyafah/sufi spiritual experience.

Abstract

In the last few decades, interpretation with a contextual approach has begun to occupy a central position in the paradigm of interpreting the Qur'an. This is because the classical method of interpreting the Qur'an which is static and more textual is considered no longer compatible in responding to the reality of the era which is developing very complexly. This paper utilizes the library research method to examine the epistemological reasoning of contextual interpretation. The results of this study found that contextual interpretation is a form of approach in interpreting the Qur'an which starts from the argument that every text has a context that binds the meaning behind it. Thus, the meaning of a text of revelation (God's message) will only be found if an interpreter has a deep understanding of its context, then translated and elaborated based on the reality faced. In a different expression, contextual interpretation cannot be separated from the understanding of three horizons, namely between text, context, and contextualization.

Abstract

Mulla Sadra's cosmological philosophy combined with the Qur'an which is rich in spiritual values ​​can be used as a basis for building a new environmental ethic. Some of the basic principles of Mulla adrā's cosmological philosophy include: first, everything that exists, including Allah and His creation, has various hierarchies and strata of existence, which have basic and important similarities. God and His creation have an indivisible unity. Being (creation) is absolutely dependent on its Creator. Second, just as the universe with all its levels is a sign (āyah) for Allah Ta'ala, so is the Qur'an. The universe is a Big Book (Kitab Takwini), while the Qur'an is a Small Book (Kitab Tadwini). Third, as God's most perfect creation, humans have a central position and role in the hierarchy of levels of nature's existence, namely giving meaning to the reality of that existence. As the caliph of Allah, humans must do their best to maintain the balance of nature and interact fairly/correctly with other creatures (majud-majud).

Abstract

This study aims to understand the patterns and methods of Qur'anic interpretation in the Shi'a tradition through the analysis of two major works, namely Tafsir Al-Qummi and Tafsir Al-Mizan. The main focus of this research is to identify the problems associated with the interpretative approaches employed by these two exegetes, particularly how their methods shape a distinctive understanding of the Qur'an. The study seeks to answer questions regarding the patterns and methods of these two tafsir works and their contributions to enriching the understanding of the Qur'an from a Shi'a perspective. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of Shi'a exegesis, especially Tafsir Al-Qummi as a classical work and Tafsir al-Mizan as a modern interpretation.  In offering a unique perspective, the Shi'a approach to tafsir emphasizes the central role of Ahl al-Bayt as the primary authority in understanding the Qur'an. Through the analysis of these two tafsir works, this study aims to demonstrate how the Shi'a tradition of Qur'anic exegesis not only expands interpretative methods but also provides profound insights into the relationship between the sacred text and Shi'a theological doctrine.

Abstract

This article is anattempt to explain the episteme setting and the foundations of the diversity of theories about esoteric interpretation of the Qur’an (ta’wīl al-qurān). Such studies are important because there is still a misunderstanding of the meaning and truth of ta’wīl al-qurān. Through this article, the author wants to map discourse, look for aspects of the similarities and differences in theories about al-ta’wīl. Next, analyze the implications of the theory for the application of ta’wīl al-qurān. In addition, to exposing differences in theoretical views, this article is also intended to show the meeting point between the views of the interpreters of the Sunnah and Shi'ite, as well as between the exoteric scholars (ahl Sharīah) and esoteric scholars (ahl Ṭarīqah) about the nature of ta’wīl al-qurān. The discussion begins with a review of the definition and basic meaning of al-ta’wīl in terms of etymology and terminology. Then, the author invites the reader to examine the views of the commentators related to the requirements, classification, patterns of relation, methods and steps toward ta’wīl al-Qurān. In this article, the author shows the agreement that the exoteric meaning (ma’nā zhāhir) as the basic foundation of ta’wīl, in addition to the other differents according to how they understand the Qur’an and its nature meaning. It is explained also influence the classification and pattern of relation –chosen by commentators- on how the methods and steps work toward ta’wīl al-Qurān

Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa metodologi penerjemahan Muhammad Asad dalam The Message of the Qur’an mengadopsi pendekatan komprehensif dan kontekstual. Pendekatan ini mempertimbangkan aspek sejarah, sosial, dan filosofis dari ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an. Asad memadukan metode penerjemahan literal dan interpretatif untuk memberikan pemahaman yang mendalam dan fleksibel terhadap Al-Qur’an. Mengingat bahasa Arab Al-Qur’an adalah bahasa klasik dengan struktur makna yang kompleks, metode interpretatif lebih dominan dibandingkan dengan penerjemahan literal. Selain itu, Asad menerjemahkan sumber-sumber Isra'iliyyat tanpa elemen mitologis, yang dianggap tidak penting. Ia lebih menekankan simbolisme dan makna filosofis dalam menafsirkan ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an. Untuk memperkaya interpretasinya, Asad memanfaatkan berbagai sumber pendukung, seperti hadis, sejarah, geografi, sains, arkeologi, Alkitab, serta literatur klasik dan kontemporer. Hasilnya, karyanya menjadi relevan dengan realitas modern serta memenuhi kebutuhan intelektual baik bagi pembaca Muslim maupun non-Muslim. Dengan demikian, karya ini menjembatani pesan asli Al-Qur’an dengan kebutuhan intelektual dan spiritual masyarakat modern, khususnya di dunia Barat. Studi ini menggunakan metodologi kualitatif dan studi kepustakaan. Data ini berasal dari berbagai sumber, seperti tulisan Muhammad Asad dan studi akademik tentang penerjemahan Al-Qur'an. Penelitian ini juga menganalisis latar belakang intelektual dan biografi Muhammad Asad, termasuk pengaruh pendidikan serta pengalaman hidupnya terhadap metodologi penerjemahannya. Penelitian ini berkontribusi terhadap kajian penerjemahan Al-Qur’an dengan mengeksplorasi lebih dalam metodologi yang diterapkan oleh Asad serta implikasinya terhadap perkembangan tafsir kontemporer. Implikasi penelitian ini mencakup pemahaman yang lebih mendalam mengenai pentingnya konteks dalam penerjemahan Al-Qur’an, khususnya dalam mempertahankan makna asli teks Arab dan memastikan relevansinya bagi masyarakat modern.

Abstract

This study discusses the dichotomy of economic paradigms, examined both theoretically and practically, in relation to the value of economic inclusivity, and aims to contextualize the definitions of monetary verses in the Qur’an. The research was undertaken because the interpretation of currency by the majority of mufassir (Qur’anic commentators), Islamic academics, and economists has misinterpreted the meaning of money when linked to the development of today’s monetary system. This study employs a literature review method and thematic interpretation that is appropriate given the relevance of non-field data samples. The findings indicate that the heterodox economic paradigm is more coherent than the orthodox paradigm from a theoretical standpoint, and this view is supported by strong archaeological evidence. A monetarily sovereign government is at least capable of purchasing anything domestically, including employing the entire unemployed population. In addressing poverty, inequality, unemployment, and inclusivity, the heterodox paradigm features a consumption-led growth program that is considerably more efficient and has a better economic impact compared to the orthodox paradigm’s investment-led growth policy proposals. In terms of interpretation, the understanding of money as a medium of exchange from the orthodox paradigm is only suitable for mercantile societies without authority, as was the case in the Arab world during the Jahiliyyah era, whereas the definition of money as a unit of account is a more appropriate definition to be used today in light of the differences and advancements in the monetary system

Abstract

Penghormatan terhadap Ahlulbait Nabi Muhammad SAW merupakan aspek penting dalam tradisi Islam yang diakui oleh banyak umat Muslim. Namun, terdapat berbagai pandangan dan interpretasi mengenai penghormatan ini, terutama dalam konteks modern. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami perspektif Al-Qur'an mengenai penghormatan kepada Ahlulbait dan menganalisis bagaimana nilai-nilai tersebut dapat diterapkan dalam konteks masyarakat kontemporer. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan hermeneutik Fazlur Rahman dengan teori gerakan ganda. Penelitian ini mengumpulkan dan menganalisis ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an dan hadis-hadis yang berkaitan dengan Ahlulbait, serta menggunakan literatur yang relevan untuk mendalami isu ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penghormatan kepada Ahlulbait tidak hanya merupakan bentuk cinta kepada Nabi Muhammad SAW, tetapi juga pengakuan terhadap peran spiritual dan sosial mereka dalam Islam. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi dua ayat kunci yang sering dijadikan dasar penghormatan, yaitu QS. Al-Ahzab/33:33 dan QS. Asy-Syura/42:23. Penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya sikap proporsional dalam menghormati Ahlulbait, berdasarkan pada ketakwaan dan perilaku mereka, bukan sekadar hubungan darah. Pendekatan hermeneutik "Double Movement" memungkinkan pemahaman yang lebih dinamis dan kontekstual terhadap penghormatan ini dalam masyarakat modern.
