Abstract

The implementation of community service through the Students Village Empowerment Program aims to disseminate and educate on the cultivation and processing of maggot as a protein source for poultry and increase the knowledge of farmers in using maggot as an alternative feed in poultry rations. The benefits of community service activities were to provide skills and knowledge about maggot utilization as a source of poultry feed so that it can be applied in poultry feed by the target audience or farmers. The village empowerment activity of the students was carried out in Kanie Village, Maritengngae District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The object of farmer groups were native chicken farmers, domestic chicken traders, and layer chicken farmers who were the part of Prima Karya Sentosa Livestock Farmer Group (35 people). The stages of implementing the activity are preparation including coordination, team and participants preparation including the 25-student engagement of the Animal Production Technology study program (DIV), and preparation of extension materials. The extension method was carried out in the form of a lecture and discussion with all members of the group. Training infrastructure and other facilities were provided by the farmer group partner. All the participants were expected to have knowledge and skills in cultivating maggots including the BSF maggot life cycle, maggot nutrient content, and maggot application in the feed after attending the training. Therefore, assistance should be conducted for the sustainable program of poultry management, especially applying maggots as poultry feed ingredients.

Abstract

Abstract

In Indonesia, livestock development is crucial in improving human resources and determining the future of a nation. The quality of human resources is influenced by the level of food consumption, especially animal-sourced protein consumption obtained from livestock. The consumption of animal protein is 16.67 grams per capita per day and contributes 25.8% to total protein consumption. Consumption of animal-based food such as meat is 4.46 grams, and eggs and milk are 3.43 grams per capita per day. The contribution of animal protein consumption is 0.76 grams per capita per day. Beef demand has rapidly grown over the past few years in Indonesia, but it is not matched by a significant increase in domestic beef production. One of the problems is the availability and continuity of the feed. Therefore, crop residue is a potential feed resource that can be used as an alternative feed. The integrated crop-livestock system can be a solution to overcome feed availability for beef cattle. For this reason, crop residue identification and mapping should be conducted in each region (province, regions/cities) to generate the database for development planning policy involved in the development area of a crop-livestock system based on the specific location for the appropriate crop. Keywords: beef cattle, crop residue, integrated farming, rice straw, corn

Abstract

Sidenreng Rappang Regency is one of the duck production centers in South Sulawesi Province. However, most duck eggs are still marketed in fresh form with limited innovation in processing and packaging. The traditional management of existing processed products generally results in low competitiveness. This condition highlights the importance of innovation in processing and packaging to optimize local potential and contribute to improving community welfare. The purpose of this program was to empower PKK women’s groups in Manisa Village by enhancing their skills in producing oven-salted eggs and product packaging. The activities were carried out using a participatory approach through three stages: socialization, technical training on salted egg processing with an oven, and packaging training. The implementation showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge across all aspects. Pre-test and post-test results indicated that basic knowledge of salted egg production increased from 37% to 76%, production using the wet method from 38% to 77%, and the use of ovens and packaging rose from 25–30% to 79%. This twofold increase reflects the effectiveness of practice-based training, where participants not only understood the concepts but were also able to apply the skills independently. Participants were also able to practice using vacuum plastic and attaching labels. The participants' response was very positive, as seen from their enthusiasm in the discussion and hands-on practice

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to increase the pregnancy and birth rates of beef cattle through dissemination and training on reproductive technology management for the Padaidi Livestock Farmer Group in Tanete Village, Maritengngae District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The main issues faced by the partners included low pregnancy rates (25–40%) and limited knowledge among farmers regarding reproductive management and disorders such as postpartum anestrus, repeat breeder, silent heat, and abortion. The activity was carried out in several stages: preparation, training, mentoring, and monitoring and evaluation. The training covered topics such as mating management, reproductive performance recording, and the identification and prevention of reproductive disorders. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test methods to measure participants' improvement in understanding. The results showed a significant increase in farmers' comprehension of the materials presented, including mating management, handling of cows and calves, and reproductive disorders. The active participation of farmers throughout the program demonstrated strong enthusiasm and commitment to applying the knowledge gained. This initiative is expected to enhance the productivity of smallholder cattle farming and serve as a foundation for the development of sustainable mentoring programs between universities and local communities.
