Abstract

The Aceh Province, recognized as one of the world's finest coffee producers, is also known as the "Land of 1001 Coffee Shops," reflecting its deeply rooted coffee-drinking culture. In Banda Aceh, the growth of coffee shops has increasingly concentrated in the city center, driven by a shift in young people's preferences for public social spaces. Coffee shop locations play a dual role as commercial facilities and public spaces, emphasizing their significance in connecting activities within specific zoning and spatial functions. This study aimed to identify the distribution pattern of coffee shop locations in the Kuta Alam subdistrict, designated in Banda Aceh’s Detailed Spatial Plan for trade, services, residential, and public service zones. Data collection involved identifying 109 coffee shop locations. The analysis employed quantitative and spatial methods. The findings revealed that the spatial distribution of coffee shops in Kuta Alam predominantly occurs along local roads, with clustering along secondary arterial roads and the least presence on primary arterial roads. Most coffee shops are located near residential areas, regardless of road classifications. All coffee shops in Kuta Alam exhibit clustered spatial distribution (average nearest neighbor index below 1) clustering occurs in areas like Bandar Baru and Peunayong and along roads such as Syiah Kuala.

Abstract

This community service project focuses on disaster advocacy in Aceh, Indonesia, by drawing lessons from Japans experience with Mount Fuji. The subject of dedication is the local community and university students in Banda Aceh, particularly those with limited knowledge and preparedness regarding the volcanic hazards of Mount Seulawah. The aim of this program is to raise disaster literacy, strengthen awareness, and encourage proactive preparedness through an innovative advocacy model that combines technology and cultural approaches. The methodology of this program involved several stages: information gathering and literature review about Mount Seulawah and Mount Fuji; team discussions and planning to design advocacy content; interactive media displays such as VR application MSeulawah, 360-degree videos, banners, brochures, and cultural arts; and public advocacy conducted during the Bunkasai Festival at Syiah Kuala University. Tactics included the use of cardboard VR for immersive experiences, video screenings, interactive games to test disaster knowledge, and cultural elements such as Japanese art and traditional games to increase community engagement. The outcomes demonstrate that the integration of technology and cultural strategies was effective in attracting participation, especially among students. Visitors reported an increase in knowledge and awareness of volcanic risks, while the interactive media successfully enhanced retention and engagement. This initiative highlights the potential of hybrid advocacy models to strengthen community resilience and suggests the establishment of a Seulawah Museum as a long-term educational platform.

Abstract

Land-use changes surrounding industrial areas not only have physical impacts on the environment but also create significant social and economic implications for local communities. Changes occurring near cement industry in the Kemukiman Lhoknga, Aceh Besar Regency have transformed land that was previously forest into cement industrial zones, residential areas, and trade and service sectors. This study aims to analyze the influence of the cement industry on changes in land use, as well as the social and economic conditions of the community. Data were collected through primary approaches, including field observations, interviews with local community representatives, and questionnaires distributed to residents, as well as secondary approaches through satellite image interpretation, literature review, and government agency data. The results show an expansion of residential land by 66.38 ha, most of which originated from the conversion of forest land (−80.79 ha) and plantations (−5.10 ha). Social changes were reflected in the shift in community attitudes from initially rejecting to eventually accepting the presence of the cement industry. This change in attitude was driven by economic improvements, marked by expanded employment opportunities and increased community income.

Abstract

This study examines community empowerment strategies to develop Luthu Lamweu Village as a sustainable tourism destination based on community-based tourism (CBT). Strategically located in Sukamakmur District, Aceh Besar Regency, the village boasts significant tourism potential, including natural landscapes, cultural traditions, and local products such as handicrafts and traditional cuisine. However, this potential remains underutilized due to inadequate infrastructure, weak institutional frameworks, limited community capacity in tourism management, and suboptimal promotional efforts. The research utilized a descriptive method with data collected through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The findings reveal a high level of community enthusiasm for tourism development, driven by an awareness of its positive economic impacts in improving local livelihoods. A participatory approach, involving skills-based training, institutional capacity building, and strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, has been identified as a primary strategic measure. Key recommendations include the implementation of homestay management training, development of creative economic products, conservation of local culture, and sustainable environmental management. Moreover, the establishment of local institutional frameworks, such as tourism management groups (Pokdarwis), is essential for structured and sustainable management of the village’s potential. Collaboration among government bodies, private sectors, academia, and local communities is critical for the successful implementation of these strategies. By adopting a community empowerment-focused and integrated management approach, Luthu Lamweu Village has the potential to become a model for sustainable tourism destinations that balance economic, social, and environmental aspects while serving as an inspiration for other villages in Aceh Besar and beyond.
