Abstract

Maintaining the dental and oral health of their children is greatly aided by mothers' awareness of dental emergencies. Dental emergencies might involve issues that need to be treated right once, like infections, chipped teeth, or damaged teeth. Aloe vera is a natural substance with remarkable healing qualities, which is why it is used in first aid for wounds. Aloe vera gel, which is readily extracted contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant substances that can help relieve pain, minimize swelling, and prevent infection. In Cideng Village, Gambir District, Central Jakarta, PKK women received counseling on handling wounds with aloe vera plants and dental trauma emergencies to increase their knowledge and abilities in dealing with dental trauma problems and wound healing with aloe vera. Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Trisakti Team from the dentistry education study program, the dentistry profession study program, and the master of dentistry study program completed this Community Service activity. Counseling and instructional media, including power point, videos, and posters, are used as part of community service projects. Through exams administered prior to counseling and compared with those administered following counseling, an increase in knowledge of tooth trauma crises and wound treatment using Aloe vera was gained in this activity. This counseling exercise is a crucial step in learning more about using Aloe vera to heal wounds from oral and dental injuries. It is necessary to keep taking a structural approach to the community. It is anticipated that social media counseling would expand its influence inside the community.

Abstract

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is a crucial dental intervention designed to maintain the vitality of the dental pulp, particularly in carious lesions or trauma. The evolution of biomaterials in VPT has significantly affected dental practices by providing less invasive alternatives that safeguard tooth vitality and functionality. Continued exploration of the properties and effects of these materials is crucial for enhancing treatment strategies and optimizing dental care outcomes. Bibliometric analysis allowed the assessment of trends in the biomaterials used for VPT. Data mining was performed using the Scopus database and Boolean expressions. Data extraction and analysis were conducted using VOSviewer version 1.6.20., VOSviewer thesaurus, and Microsoft Excel. A total of 856 documents were identified, and the United States had the largest number of documents and citations (110 documents, 6,938 citations). The top three sources were the Journal of Endodontics, International Journal of Endodontics, and Dental Materials Journal. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is still the dominant biomaterial used in VPT to this day. MTA can accelerate dentinogenesis in VPT. The prominence of “MTA” and “VPT” as keywords highlights research on prevalence, causes, prevention, and evaluation, emphasizing the need to investigate biomaterial-driven healing, regeneration, stem cell activity, and gene expression.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer has one of the highest death rates of all cancer types due to lack of treatment. Persea americana leaves consist of phenolic compounds that are known to have anticancer effects to inhibit the proliferation of human squamous carcinoma (HSC-3) cell lines. Ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves can inhibit the cell cycle in the G1/S and G2/M phases to give the cells time to repair damaged DNA. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves on HSC-3 proliferation. Methods: This study was conducted using experimental research and in vitro laboratory testing. Groups of extract consisted of four concentrations (100%, 50%, 25%, and 10%). Cytotoxic activity of the extracts was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Result: P. americana leave ethanol extracts with concentrations of 100% had a significant difference (p <0.05) compared to negative control. Conclusion: Ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves could inhibit HSC-3 proliferation.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the major diseases that can cause death worldwide. With the advancement of research on new drugs, medicinal plants have been explored as an alternative approach to cancer treatment. Papaya (Carica papaya) is a plant that has long been used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of C. papaya leaf have been reported to exhibit anticancer properties through mechanisms such as inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. This study aimed to analyze the cytotoxic effect of C. papaya leaf extract obtained with different extraction solvents on HSC-3 cell lines. Methods: This laboratory-based experimental study employed a post-test only control group design. The sample size was determined using the Federer formula, yielding four replicates per group. HSC-3 cell lines were treated with ethanolic and aqueous extracts of C. papaya leaf at concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 μg/mL for 24 hours, followed by a cytotoxicity test using the CCK-8 assay. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in both ethanolic and aqueous extracts, whereas triterpenoids were detected only in the ethanolic extract, and saponins were detected only in aqueous extract. HSC-3 cells did not show any significant cytotoxic response to either extract at any tested concentration. Conclusion: Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of C. papaya leaf at concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 μg/mL did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects on HSC-3 cell lines.
