Abstract

Sialang Village is one of the villages in North Sumatra, precisely located in Bangun Purba District, Deli Serdang Regency. The village is surrounded by oil palm plantations, both company-owned and private, with the main livelihood of the villagers working on oil palm plantations and also raising cattle. The village's potential to produce palm fronds waste is very large, but the villagers do not use palm fronds waste because they do not know how to treat this waste. Meanwhile, grass as animal feed has become increasingly difficult to obtain from time to time because residents have maximized the use of empty land for planting oil palm. Therefore, the University of North Sumatra community service team wants to apply science and technology in Sialang Village in the form of transfer of knowledge and technology on processing palm frond waste into animal feed integrated with chopper machines.

Abstract

Fertilizer is the main needed for farmers to support agricultural products. However, the availability of chemical fertilizers in the market was once scarce due to its limited availability. To avoid dependence on the need for chemical fertilizers is to look for other alternatives as plant fertilizers. One alternative to chemical fertilizers is compost produced from organic waste. Compost fertilizer is available in several forms, namely solid fertilizer and liquid fertilizer. In this community service, training was conducted on making a simple composter to make organic fertilizer. The composter produced in this activity is very easy to do and made by partners because it comes from materials that are easily obtained around partners. The advantage of this composter is that it can produce both solid fertilizer and liquid fertilizer at the same time, but the concern of the service team is a liquid fertilizer because its use is more practical and easier for plants to absorb. During the training process, the partners were very enthusiastic about participating in the activity and asking questions related to composting. In this composter, the waste used is organic waste resulting from household waste which is placed at the top of the composter. Then the composter is closed and allowed to ferment by microorganisms. The results of organic liquid fertilizer can be accommodated at the bottom of the composter and then applied to plants in a ratio of 1:10.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service initiative was implemented at Balee Carong in Alue Buloh Village, an isolated rural community experiencing significant educational access limitations due to damaged bridge infrastructure. The geographical constraints had severely restricted children's opportunities for supplementary education, including tutoring programs and religious studies. The program aimed to enhance children's fundamental skills in Iqro' reading, memorization of short surahs and daily prayers, along with basic literacy and numeracy competencies through participatory and engaging learning methodologies. Employing Participatory Action Research (PAR) as its foundational framework, the project positioned university students as both facilitators and collaborative change agents working directly with the community. Over a 45-day implementation period, educational activities were delivered through interactive approaches including game-based learning, singing, storytelling, and various creative exercises tailored to local context. Implementation results demonstrated remarkable progress in both religious and academic dimensions among participating children. Quantitative and qualitative assessments revealed that the majority of children showed substantial advancement in Iqro' reading proficiency, with significant increases in memorization of Islamic prayers and short chapters from the Quran. Concurrently, participants exhibited marked improvement in basic reading, writing, and arithmetic capabilities. The program culminated in two significant closing events: a "Festival Anak Sholeh" (Righteous Children's Festival) serving as a comprehensive evaluation platform where children demonstrated their acquired knowledge, and an educational field trip designed as both a recreational activity and cultural enrichment experience. These outcomes substantiate that the PAR methodology, when implemented through emotional engagement strategies, active community participation, and enjoyable pedagogical techniques, effectively enhances educational quality for children in underserved remote areas. The study offers valuable insights for educational practitioners and policymakers seeking to address educational disparities in isolated communities through contextually appropriate interventions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of population, agricultural sector, trade, Information and Communication, real estate, and education on regional tax revenue using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method. This research employs a quantitative approach with a causal associative method, focusing on cause-and-effect relationships between variables. The data used are secondary time series data collected from official documents of relevant agencies, such as the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation. The analysis results show that the population (X1) variable has a positive but insignificant effect on regional tax revenue (β = 19903.651; p = 0.400). The agricultural sector (X2) also shows a positive yet insignificant effect (β = 535.792; p = 0.858). In contrast, the trade sector (X3) has a negative effect, nearing significance (β = -13,683,591; p = 0.076). The transportation Information and Communication sector (X4) (β = 73,528,699; p = 0.251) and real estate sector (X5) (β = 61,295,163; p = 0.264) have positive but insignificant effects. Meanwhile, the education sector (X6) has a very weak and insignificant effect (β = 2,282,092; p = 0.956). The multicollinearity test results using Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) show that the education (VIF = 9.831) and real estate (VIF = 7.262) variables have relatively high multicollinearity. Nevertheless, the Breusch-Pagan test did not indicate significant heteroscedasticity (p = 0.155), meaning that the model is free from heteroscedasticity issues. The Durbin-Watson Test result of 2.107 indicates no autocorrelation in the model, ensuring the validity of the regression estimates. With an R-square value of 0.588, this model explains 58.8% of the variation in regional tax revenue. Although most variables are not significant, the findings suggest that the trade, transportation, and real estate sectors may potentially influence tax revenue. The use of the PLS method proves effective in addressing multicollinearity issues and provides more stable estimates compared to classical linear regression.
