Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: This study explores how William Blake represents humanity through the concepts of innocence and experience in Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. Using a qualitative interpretive approach, the study analyzes selected paired poems to examine how moral awareness, emotional development, and humanitarian concerns are constructed through poetic contrast. The analysis is conducted through close reading and intertextual comparison, focusing on imagery, tone, and symbolic opposition between innocence and experience. The findings show that Blake does not present innocence and experience as opposing states, but as interconnected stages of human consciousness. Innocence is associated with trust, emotional openness, and moral hope, while experience reveals suffering, social injustice, and ethical failure. Through this tension, Blake invites readers to reflect on moral responsibility, empathy, and the impact of authority and social institutions on human life. The study argues that Blake’s poetic vision highlights humanity as a process shaped by moral struggle rather than fixed moral certainty. By combining textual analysis with a humanistic and reader-oriented perspective, this research contributes to literary studies by showing how Blake’s poetry continues to offer ethical insight into the human condition.

Abstract

The folklore of Hui Cilembu is one of the oral literature treasures in Sumedang Regency that contains moral values and etiological history. However, along with modernization, the existence of this oral tradition faces the risk of extinction if not scientifically documented. This study aims to dissect the narrative structure, identify the function of the story for the community, and formulate efforts for its preservation. The approach used is qualitative narratology by applying Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale theory. The research data was sourced from the oral text of the Hui Cilembu folklore, which was analyzed through the scheme of narrative functions and the character's spheres of action. The results showed that the story's narrative is constructed by a moral testing structure manifested in Propp's dominant functions, namely the Initial Situation (\(\alpha \)), the First Function of the Donor or Test (D), the Hero's Reaction (E), and Magic/Punishment/Reward (F/W/K). An overlapping of roles occurs where the Prince of Sumedang acts as both the donor/tester and the hero. Sociologically, this story functions as a means of moral education (didactic) and legitimization of the origin of local commodities. The implications of this structural analysis contribute directly to the preservation of oral literature through academic textual documentation and provide teaching materials based on local wisdom for primary education in the related area.

Abstract

Character education is an essential aspect of education because it aims not only to develop students’ intellectual abilities but also to strengthen moral values, social responsibility, and cultural identity. Traditional literary works can serve as a medium for character development because they contain local wisdom and life values inherited from society. This study aims to analyze the ethnopedagogical values of Gapura Panca Waluya in the Sundanese traditional literary work Wawacan Babad Sumedang and to explain its relevance as a source of character strengthening for students in literary learning. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytical method. The data source was the text of Wawacan Babad Sumedang manuscript variant Plt-29-Peti-121 by Abdoerachman. Data were collected through documentation studies and textual analysis by identifying, interpreting, and categorizing cultural values based on the concepts of cageur, bageur, bener, pinter, and singer. The results showed that Wawacan Babad Sumedang contains significant ethnopedagogical values representing the ideal Sundanese human character (jalma anu masagi). The value of cageur reflects self-control and inner balance, bageur represents social concern and respect, bener emphasizes integrity and responsibility, pinter illustrates intelligence and wisdom, while singer reflects creativity and adaptability. These findings indicate that traditional Sundanese literature has relevance as a source of character education and can be integrated into literary learning based on local cultural values.
