Abstract

This research investigates the determinant factors of public speaking anxiety among Indonesian university students through both pedagogical and socio-psychological lenses. Public speaking anxiety is a prevalent phenomenon in language acquisition, potentially affecting communicative competence and academic achievement, especially in the context of foreign language learning. This study explores the influence of academic motivation, intolerance of uncertainty, and the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism) as potential mediators in shaping speaking anxiety among Indonesian Arabic students in Islamic higher education. The research was conducted among students enrolled in Arabic Language Education programs at several state Islamic religious higher education institutions (PTKIN) in Indonesia. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to analyze the data, collected via self-report questionnaires. The results show that academic motivation does not significantly influence openness, while intolerance of uncertainty does. Of the Big Five traits, only openness and extraversion significantly affect speaking anxiety. Academic motivation influences conscientiousness, but not extraversion, while intolerance of uncertainty affects extraversion, but not agreeableness. Openness and extraversion mediate the relationship between academic motivation and speaking anxiety.

This study aims to test the reliability and validity of the Academic Resilience Inventory (ARI), which was developed by Samuel (2004) for the Indonesian context. The inventory adaptation procedure that the researchers did in this research refers to the journal Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures (Beaton, 2000).  The total amount of sample used in this study was 200 students of Public Vocational School 1 Pandeglang, taken by using accidental sampling. To test the validity of the measurement inventory, the researcher used Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with Lisrel software. The result revealed that, in general, the Academic Resilience Inventory (ARI) by Samuel (2004) is significantly unidimensional, meaning it only measures the construct of the academic resilience inventory. However, in the result of CFA, the validity test known that item no.8 on the intelligence factor, item no. Forty on temperamental factors, items no. 2, 14, 25, 26, and 28 on social relations factors, item no. Three on the factor of family relations, item no. 6 on academic factors are invalid. Further psychometric properties analysis and education are described.

Abstract

This study explores the differences in Subjective Well-Being (SWB) among early childhood education (ECE) teachers in Indonesia and Malaysia. A total of 200 teacher of ECE participated. Statistical tests indicated that the data from both groups significantly deviated from a normal distribution. As a result, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was applied to compare the SWB scores, revealing a significant difference between the two countries (p = 0.015). Teachers in Malaysia reported higher SWB, suggesting that cultural and educational policies may influence well-being. Regression analysis assessed the impact of work tenure and gender on SWB, but neither factor was found to be significant. Notably, years of service negatively affected SWB, indicating that longer tenure is associated with lower well-being in both countries. These results highlight the importance of considering contextual factors such as social support and work-life balance in addressing teacher well-being. This study addresses a significant research gap by providing cross-national evidence on subjective well-being (SWB) among early childhood education (ECE) teachers in Southeast Asia, this research offers novel insights into how national education systems and socio-cultural environments influence teacher well-being. By comparing Indonesia and Malaysia, the study highlights previously unexplored regional differences and underscores the need for context-sensitive policy interventions across diverse educational settings.
