Abstract

This study was motivated by the low scores on midterm and final exams in the Citylight GBI Rayon 8 youth worship programme, where some children scored below the minimum standard of 70. This raised questions about the effectiveness of the methods used to teach the Word of God, particularly the use of PowerPoint teaching media and the level of creativity of Sunday School teachers/facilitators in delivering the material. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the use of PowerPoint teaching media and facilitator creativity with children's understanding of the Word of God, as measured by mid-term and final exam scores. This study employs a quantitative method with a correlational approach. Data was collected through a 15-item questionnaire using a Likert scale distributed to 64 respondents, who were a sample of the total 175 children. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software to test validity, significance, and correlations between variables. The results of the study indicate a significant relationship between facilitator creativity in using PowerPoint teaching media and improved children's absorption of the Word of God. Children who participated in worship using engaging and creative teaching media tended to have better understanding and achieved scores above 70. The conclusion of this study emphasises the importance of creative facilitators in supporting the effectiveness of learning God's Word, as well as the need for collaboration between the church and parents in strengthening children's understanding outside the context of Sunday worship.

Abstract

Abstract:This study aims to explore a theo-pedagogical model of Christian learning based on the Israeli Shema as a foundational framework for contextual Christian education. The research seeks to identify how the core theological principles embedded in the Shema—particularly its emphasis on covenantal obedience, holistic devotion, and intergenerational transmission of faith—can inform learning practices that are more relevant to contemporary educational settings. Employing a qualitative descriptive method supported by an in-depth literature review, this study analyses biblical-theological interpretations of the Shema alongside recent scholarly discussions in Christian pedagogy. The findings reveal that the Shema provides a comprehensive learning paradigm that integrates cognitive, affective, and practical dimensions of faith formation, emphasising the unity of belief, daily practice, and community life. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic integration of the Shema’s theological structure with contextual Christian education, offering a fresh framework that bridges ancient Israelite pedagogy and modern learning needs. The study’s implications highlight the urgency for Christian educators to adopt relational, life-oriented, and community-based learning approaches that foster deep spiritual formation and nurture holistic Christian identity within diverse and evolving educational contexts.

Abstract

The story of Simon of Cyrene being compelled to carry Jesus’ cross (Luke 23:26) is often read as a peripheral narrative within the Passion account. However, from a pastoral theological perspective, Simon’s figure represents a profound act of empathy and an actualization of solidarity in suffering. This article aims to highlight the pastoral significance of Simon of Cyrene’s action as a paradigm of empathy in pastoral ministry. Through a pastoral hermeneutical approach and biblical narrative analysis, the study elaborates how Simon’s action reflects an active presence amid the suffering of others, even without prior preparation or willingness. This context is highly relevant for contemporary pastoral care, especially in accompanying individuals or communities experiencing trauma, crisis, or marginalization. The theology of empathy derived from Simon’s story challenges pastoral ministers to embody real solidarity—not merely through words of consolation, but through concrete involvement in bearing the burdens of others. The article also emphasizes the importance of pastoral readiness to become “contemporary Simons,” present not because of position or authority, but out of a heartfelt calling to compassionate accompaniment. Thus, the story of Simon of Cyrene serves as a reflective mirror for a humanistic, responsive, and transformative model of pastoral ministry amidst the realities of suffering in today’s world.
