Abstract

ABSTRACT Denture stomatitis (DS) is a prevalent inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa, frequently observed in individuals wearing removable dentures. The condition is primarily initiated by the colonization of Candida species, though its development is often accelerated by other predisposing factors, making it a multifactorial clinical challenge. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the condition by focusing on a systematic review of the most recent scientific literature published from 2020 onward. The research methodology involved a systematic search across multiple scientific databases to gather current data on the epidemiology, etiology, risk factors, and contemporary therapeutic approaches for DS. The results from this review indicate a high prevalence of the condition, with a notable incidence among elderly patients and individuals with specific systemic health issues. The findings confirm that effective management necessitates a multifaceted strategy, combining conventional antifungal agents, innovative approaches like photodynamic therapy, and strict adherence to enhanced denture hygiene protocols. In conclusion, the successful treatment of denture stomatitis is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it requires an individualized therapeutic plan that is carefully tailored to each patient's specific risk factors and the underlying etiology of their condition. ABSTRAK Stomatitis gigi tiruan (DS) merupakan kondisi peradangan yang umum terjadi pada mukosa mulut, yang sering terjadi pada orang yang memakai gigi tiruan lepasan. Kondisi ini terutama dipicu oleh kolonisasi spesies Candida, meskipun perkembangannya sering kali dipercepat oleh faktor predisposisi lain, sehingga menjadikannya tantangan klinis multifaktorial. Artikel ini memberikan gambaran umum yang komprehensif tentang kondisi tersebut dengan berfokus pada tinjauan sistematis literatur ilmiah terbaru yang diterbitkan sejak tahun 2020 dan seterusnya. Metodologi penelitian melibatkan pencarian sistematis di berbagai basis data ilmiah untuk mengumpulkan data terkini tentang epidemiologi, etiologi, faktor risiko, dan pendekatan terapi kontemporer untuk DS. Hasil dari tinjauan ini menunjukkan prevalensi kondisi yang tinggi, dengan insidensi yang menonjol di antara pasien lanjut usia dan individu dengan masalah kesehatan sistemik tertentu. Temuan tersebut menegaskan bahwa manajemen yang efektif memerlukan strategi multifaset, yang menggabungkan agen antijamur konvensional, pendekatan inovatif seperti terapi fotodinamik, dan kepatuhan ketat terhadap protokol kebersihan gigi tiruan yang ditingkatkan. Sebagai kesimpulan, pengobatan stomatitis gigi tiruan yang berhasil bukanlah solusi yang cocok untuk semua orang; Hal ini memerlukan rencana terapi individual yang disesuaikan dengan faktor risiko spesifik setiap pasien dan etiologi yang mendasari kondisi mereka.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the crucial role of dental implants as a rehabilitation solution for tooth loss, yet they still face challenges related to bone integration, material durability, and procedure optimization. The use of materials such as hydroxyapatite (HA) and modern technologies continues to be developed to address these issues. Therefore, this study focuses on conducting a literature review of recent developments in dental implant materials and procedures. The method used was a descriptive analytical literature review of three relevant primary articles discussing HA/MWCNT synthesis, implant interaction with saliva, and immediate implant placement procedures. Findings from the first article demonstrated that the combination of HA with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) through electrophoretic deposition improved coating uniformity and corrosion resistance. The second article confirmed the safety of the implant material through artificial saliva analysis, which detected no harmful elements after corrosion. The third article demonstrated that immediate implant placement after extraction, with the support of bone graft and antibiotics, effectively maintained tissue structure and improved aesthetics. It was concluded that the selection of innovative materials such as HA/MWCNT and procedural approaches, such as immediate implant placement, significantly contribute to improving the clinical success, aesthetics, and safety of dental implants. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh peran krusial implan gigi sebagai solusi rehabilitasi kehilangan gigi, namun masih menghadapi tantangan terkait integrasi tulang, ketahanan material, dan optimalisasi prosedur. Penggunaan material seperti hidroksiapatit (HA) dan teknologi modern terus dikembangkan untuk mengatasi masalah ini. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini berfokus untuk melakukan tinjauan literatur terhadap perkembangan terkini dalam material dan prosedur pemasangan implan gigi. Metode yang digunakan adalah literature review deskriptif analitis terhadap tiga artikel utama yang relevan, membahas sintesis HA/MWCNT, interaksi implan dengan saliva, dan prosedur pemasangan implan segera. Temuan dari artikel pertama menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi HA dengan multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) melalui deposisi elektroforetik meningkatkan keseragaman lapisan dan ketahanan korosi. Artikel kedua mengonfirmasi keamanan material implan melalui analisis saliva buatan yang tidak mendeteksi unsur berbahaya pasca korosi. Artikel ketiga membuktikan bahwa pemasangan implan segera setelah pencabutan, dengan dukungan graft tulang dan antibiotik, efektif mempertahankan struktur jaringan dan meningkatkan estetika. Disimpulkan bahwa pemilihan material inovatif seperti HA/MWCNT dan pendekatan prosedural seperti pemasangan implan segera secara signifikan berkontribusi pada peningkatan keberhasilan klinis, estetika, dan keamanan implan gigi.

Abstract

Dental implant is considered the optimal rehabilitation option for tooth loss, a prevalent issue in Indonesia that can impair oral function. However, it presents technical challenges, particularly in the posterior maxilla where bone volume is limited. This study constitutes a literature review conducted using Google Scholar and Science Direct databases, spanning the years 2000–2024, with the keywords "dental implant", "osteotome technique", "sinus floor elevation", and "case report". The selection process prioritized relevance, scientific rigor, and contribution to the field of study. Two case reports indicate the effectiveness of the osteotome technique in augmenting bone volume and facilitating implant placement in the posterior maxilla. This technique is minimally invasive and expedites the rehabilitation process. Sinus floor elevation using the osteotome technique offers a simpler alternative to conventional procedures, associated with a lower risk of complications. Nevertheless, this technique necessitates operator proficiency and is suitable primarily for cases of mild to moderate bone defects. In conclusion, dental implant placement utilizing the osteotome technique following sinus floor elevation demonstrates efficacy for the rehabilitation of posterior maxillary teeth, contingent upon the consideration of anatomical, aesthetic, economic, and patient preference factors. ABSTRAKKehilangan gigi menjadi masalah umum di Indonesia dan dapat mengganggu fungsi oral. Dental implant merupakan pilihan rehabilitasi terbaik, meskipun memiliki tantangan teknis, khususnya di area posterior maksila dengan volume tulang terbatas. Studi ini merupakan tinjauan literatur menggunakan Google Scholar dan Science Direct pada tahun 2000–2024 dengan kata kunci "dental implant", "osteotome technique", "sinus floor elevation", dan "case report". Seleksi dilakukan berdasarkan relevansi, kualitas ilmiah, dan kontribusi terhadap bidang studi. Dua laporan kasus menunjukkan bahwa teknik osteotomi efektif untuk meningkatkan volume tulang dan memfasilitasi pemasangan implan pada posterior maksila. Teknik ini minimal invasif dan mempercepat proses rehabilitasi. Elevasi sinus dengan osteotomi menjadi alternatif prosedur yang lebih sederhana dibandingkan teknik konvensional, dengan risiko komplikasi yang lebih rendah. Namun, teknik ini memerlukan keterampilan operator dan hanya cocok untuk kasus defek ringan hingga sedang. Dental implant dengan teknik osteotomi setelah elevasi lantai sinus terbukti efektif untuk rehabilitasi gigi posterior maksila, dengan mempertimbangkan faktor anatomi, estetika, ekonomi, dan preferensi pasien.

Abstract

Black hairy tongue (BHT) is a benign but alarming oral condition characterized by hypertrophy and elongation of the filiform papillae, resulting in a black or brown discoloration of the tongue. This case report presents a 64-year-old male who developed BHT after a 10-day course of ceftriaxone and pantoprazole therapy. The patient had no history of smoking, poor oral hygiene, or systemic disease. Clinical observation revealed black discoloration on the dorsal tongue surface. The temporal association between drug administration and lesion onset, along with improvement after medication discontinuation and oral hygiene reinforcement, suggests a drug-induced etiology. The patient's condition improved following the cessation of pantoprazole and substitution of ceftriaxone with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Literature review indicates that antibiotics, especially beta-lactams, and proton pump inhibitors may play a role in the pathogenesis of BHT by altering oral microbial flora and inhibiting keratin desquamation. This case highlights the importance of clinician awareness regarding rare adverse drug reactions such as BHT. Prompt identification and management, including discontinuation of offending agents and improvement of oral hygiene, are essential for resolution and prevention of unnecessary diagnostic procedures.

Abstract

The use of dental implants is increasingly recognized as a solution to replace missing teeth. This research aims to explore the selection of materials and techniques in the development of effective and biocompatible dental implants. The main focus of this study is on bioactive materials such as hydroxyapatite (HA) and calcium metaphosphate (CMP), as well as the potential of hydroxyapatite from chicken bone as an alternative coating for dental implants. Additionally, the importance of public education through religious-based counseling is also explored to enhance the acceptance of this technology. The method used in this research is a literature review and analysis of relevant research findings. The studies analyzed include those on surface modification of dental implants with bioactive materials, the potential of hydroxyapatite from chicken bone, and research on public counseling regarding dental implants from an Islamic perspective. The analysis involves comparing the findings from existing studies and drawing key conclusions from each stud.. The results of the study show that surface modification of implants with bioactive materials can enhance bone healing and the success of osseointegration. The CMP coating proves to be superior to HA in terms of resistance to delamination and particle reduction, which could lead to implant failure. Surface modification of implants with bioactive materials like CMP and HA plays a significant role in improving osseointegration and implant stability. Moreover, the use of hydroxyapatite from chicken bone as an alternative coating for implants provides a cost-effective solution and has the potential to reduce the cost of dental implant development. ABSTRAKPenggunaan implan gigi semakin berkembang sebagai solusi untuk menggantikan gigi yang hilang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi pemilihan bahan dan teknik dalam pengembangan implan gigi yang efektif dan biokompatibel. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah bahan bioaktif seperti hydroxyapatite (HA) dan calcium metaphosphate (CMP), serta potensi hidroksiapatit dari tulang ayam sebagai alternatif pelapis implan gigi. Selain itu, pentingnya edukasi masyarakat melalui penyuluhan berbasis agama juga dieksplorasi untuk meningkatkan penerimaan teknologi ini. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tinjauan literatur dan analisis hasil penelitian terkait. Penelitian yang dianalisis meliputi studi tentang modifikasi permukaan implan gigi dengan bahan bioaktif, potensi hidroksiapatit dari tulang ayam, dan penelitian tentang penyuluhan masyarakat mengenai implan gigi dalam perspektif Islam. Analisis dilakukan dengan membandingkan hasil penelitian yang ada dan menyimpulkan temuan utama dari masing-masing studi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modifikasi permukaan implan dengan bahan bioaktif dapat meningkatkan penyembuhan tulang dan keberhasilan oseointegrasi. Lapisan CMP terbukti lebih unggul dibandingkan HA dalam ketahanan terhadap delaminasi dan pengurangan partikel yang dapat menyebabkan kegagalan implan. Modifikasi permukaan implan dengan bahan bioaktif seperti CMP dan HA memberikan kontribusi penting dalam meningkatkan osseointegrasi dan stabilitas implan. Selain itu, penggunaan hidroksiapatit dari tulang ayam sebagai alternatif pelapis implan memberikan solusi biaya efektif dan berpotensi mengurangi biaya pengembangan implan gigi. Modifikasi permukaan implan dengan bahan bioaktif seperti HA dan CMP dapat meningkatkan keberhasilan oseointegrasi, dengan CMP menunjukkan keunggulan. Selain itu, hidroksiapatit dari tulang ayam menawarkan solusi biaya efektif dalam pengembangan implan gigi.

Abstract

Dental implants are materials inserted into the jawbone that serve as supports for restorations, resembling natural teeth. In addition to their aesthetic function, implants also play an important role in the rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system. Proper maintenance is essential for the long-term success of implant-based restorations. One of the common complications is peri-implantitis, a pathological condition characterized by inflammation of the peri-implant connective tissue and progressive loss of supporting bone. If left untreated, peri-implantitis can lead to implant failure. This study is a literature review aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis. Data were collected through a search on Google Scholar using relevant keywords, yielding 15,700 articles. After applying inclusion criteria, articles were selected that were published within the last five years (2020–2024), written in English, available in full text, and categorized as original research, reviews, or case reports. Findings from three case reports indicate that non-surgical approaches provide significant clinical improvements. In Case 1, after one year, probing depth reduced to 1.5–3 mm without bleeding. In Case 2, after six months, no signs of inflammation or further bone resorption were observed, with a 2.1 mm reduction in probing depth. In Case 3, after six months, inflammatory resolution was achieved, with probing depth reduced to 2 mm and increased bone level seen on radiographs. All patients demonstrated good oral hygiene, were non-smokers, and had no uncontrolled systemic diseases. Overall, non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis can yield positive clinical outcomes in reducing probing depth and inflammation, especially in patients with good plaque control and stable systemic health. ABSTRAKImplan gigi merupakan bahan yang ditanam dalam tulang rahang dan berfungsi sebagai penyangga restorasi, dengan bentuk menyerupai gigi alami. Selain memiliki fungsi estetik, implan juga berperan dalam rehabilitasi sistem stomatognatik. Pemeliharaan yang optimal sangat penting untuk keberhasilan jangka panjang restorasi berbasis implan. Salah satu komplikasi yang dapat terjadi adalah peri-implantitis, yaitu kondisi patologis yang ditandai dengan peradangan jaringan ikat di sekitar implan dan kehilangan progresif tulang penyangga. Jika tidak ditangani, kondisi ini dapat menyebabkan kegagalan implan. Penelitian ini merupakan tinjauan pustaka (literature review) yang bertujuan untuk membahas efektivitas pengobatan non-bedah peri-implantitis. Data dikumpulkan melalui penelusuran di Google Scholar dengan kata kunci terkait, menghasilkan 15.700 artikel. Setelah dilakukan seleksi sesuai kriteria inklusi, dipilih artikel yang diterbitkan dalam lima tahun terakhir (2020–2024), berbahasa Inggris, teks lengkap, dan berupa original research, review, atau case report. Hasil dari tiga laporan kasus menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan non-bedah memberikan perbaikan klinis yang signifikan. Pada Kasus 1, setelah satu tahun, kedalaman probing berkurang menjadi 1,5–3 mm tanpa perdarahan. Pada Kasus 2, setelah enam bulan, tidak ditemukan tanda-tanda peradangan, dengan penurunan kedalaman probing sebesar 2,1 mm. Sedangkan pada Kasus 3, setelah enam bulan, terjadi resolusi inflamasi dengan kedalaman probing menjadi 2 mm dan peningkatan tingkat tulang berdasarkan radiograf. Semua pasien memiliki kebersihan mulut yang baik, tidak merokok, dan tidak memiliki penyakit sistemik yang tidak terkontrol. Secara keseluruhan, pengobatan non-bedah untuk peri-implantitis dapat memberikan hasil klinis yang positif dalam mengurangi kedalaman probing dan peradangan, terutama pada pasien dengan kontrol plak yang baik dan kondisi sistemik yang stabil.

Artificial acrylic resin tooth plates can get stained and accumulate plaque with various harmful microorganisms. Hence, a natural ingredient-based denture cleanser is required to prevent or remove extrinsic stains and plaque on the dental plates of acrylic resin dentures. The research objective is to demonstrate the efficacy of pinelapplel elxtract in relmoving or minimizing plaqulel on artificial telelth and to asselss thel elffelct of ulsing pinelapplel elxtract as a clelaning agelnt on thel qulality of lifel of delntulrel welarelrs. This relselarch is a laboratory elxpelrimelnt with a post telst only control groulp delsign. Abstract

Tooth loss affects quality of life, chewing function, and facial aesthetics. Dental implants offer a more stable and comfortable solution compared to other treatments, but their success depends on the alveolar process and osseointegration. Bone insufficiency can lead to implant failure, making bone augmentation necessary. This study reviews case reports on implant placement with bone augmentation using titanium mesh. The first case involves a 37-year-old patient who had an accident, where titanium mesh was used to support bone growth after tooth extraction and bone grafting. The results showed good bone development. The second case discusses the placement of 46 implants with a 3.3 mm diameter in a 63-year-old woman, with CBCT evaluation to assess bone thickness. Monitoring showed optimal osseointegration and good tissue healing. This success was achieved through careful planning, appropriate augmentation techniques, and strict postoperative evaluation and monitoring. In conclusion, the success of dental implant placement depends on an individualized approach, technology-based planning such as CBCT, and the right augmentation techniques. With an optimal strategy, implant stability, as well as functional and aesthetic outcomes, can be achieved, providing long-term benefits for patients. ABSTRAKKehilangan gigi berdampak pada kualitas hidup, fungsi mengunyah, dan estetika wajah. Implan gigi menawarkan solusi yang lebih stabil dan nyaman dibandingkan perawatan lain, tetapi keberhasilannya bergantung pada proses alveolar dan osseointegrasi. Insufisiensi tulang dapat menyebabkan kegagalan implan, sehingga augmentasi tulang diperlukan. Studi ini meninjau laporan kasus tentang pemasangan implan dengan augmentasi tulang menggunakan titanium mesh. Kasus pertama melibatkan pasien 37 tahun yang mengalami kecelakaan, di mana titanium mesh digunakan untuk mendukung pertumbuhan tulang setelah pencabutan gigi dan cangkok tulang. Hasil menunjukkan perkembangan tulang yang baik. Kasus kedua membahas pemasangan 46 implan berdiameter 3,3 mm pada wanita 63 tahun, dengan evaluasi CBCT untuk menilai ketebalan tulang. Pemantauan menunjukkan osseointegrasi yang optimal dan penyembuhan jaringan yang baik. Keberhasilan ini dicapai melalui perencanaan matang, teknik augmentasi yang sesuai, serta evaluasi dan pemantauan pascaoperasi yang ketat. Kesimpulannya, keberhasilan pemasangan implan gigi bergantung pada pendekatan individual, perencanaan berbasis teknologi seperti CBCT, serta teknik augmentasi yang tepat. Dengan strategi yang optimal, stabilitas implan serta hasil fungsional dan estetis dapat tercapai, memberikan manfaat jangka panjang bagi pasien. Abstract

Dental implants are a superior treatment method for replacing missing teeth, offering the advantages of functional stability and the ability to preserve jawbone structure. This case review focuses on evaluating the various procedures, challenges, and clinical outcomes of dental implant interventions in patients with various complaints. Key steps in the cases analyzed included the collection of demographic and clinical data, a medical history evaluation, and an examination of the soft and hard tissue conditions. Additionally, periapical radiographs were used to evaluate the alveolar bone volume surrounding the implant area. Key findings highlight several effective techniques: the use of multi-unit abutments in the posterior jaw allows for angled implant placement to avoid important anatomical structures (such as the sinuses or mental foramen), thus eliminating the need for bone grafting and saving time and money. Prophylactic antibiotic therapy and a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash were also found to be effective in preventing postoperative inflammation, even in diabetic patients, without impairing osteointegration. Other findings confirm that longer implants are more durable, and the success of bone grafting in repairing bone defects depends heavily on careful planning and operator skill. It is concluded that the clinical challenges of dental implants can be overcome through proper planning, advanced surgical techniques, and a thorough understanding of the patient's condition. ABSTRAKImplan gigi merupakan metode perawatan superior untuk menggantikan gigi yang hilang, menawarkan keunggulan stabilitas fungsional dan kemampuan mempertahankan struktur tulang rahang. Tinjauan artikel kasus ini berfokus pada evaluasi berbagai prosedur, tantangan, serta hasil klinis dari intervensi implan gigi pada pasien dengan beragam keluhan. Langkah-langkah penting dalam kasus yang dianalisis meliputi pengumpulan data demografi dan klinis, evaluasi riwayat kesehatan, serta pemeriksaan kondisi jaringan lunak dan keras. Selain itu, radiografi periapikal digunakan untuk mengevaluasi volume tulang alveolar di sekitar area implan. Temuan utama menyoroti beberapa teknik efektif: penggunaan abutment multi-unit di rahang posterior memungkinkan penempatan implan miring untuk menghindari struktur anatomi penting (seperti sinus atau foramen mental), sehingga meniadakan kebutuhan pencangkokan tulang serta menghemat waktu dan biaya. Ditemukan pula bahwa terapi antibiotik profilaksis dan obat kumur klorheksidin 0,12% efektif mencegah peradangan pasca-operasi, bahkan pada pasien diabetes, tanpa mengganggu osteointegrasi. Temuan lain mengkonfirmasi bahwa implan yang lebih panjang lebih tahan lama, dan keberhasilan bone graft untuk memperbaiki defek tulang sangat bergantung pada perencanaan matang serta keterampilan operator. Disimpulkan bahwa tantangan klinis implan gigi dapat diatasi melalui perencanaan yang tepat, teknik bedah canggih, dan pemahaman menyeluruh atas kondisi pasien.

Abstract

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a very common and debilitating complication of Diabetes Mellitus disease that greatly affects quality of life. The literature review aims to critically summarize recent findings that examine the development of understanding of DN, from a simple complication to a complex and multifaceted disease. This study used a literature review based on articles obtained from Google Scholar and PubMed databases. All articles discussed Diabetic Neuropathy from the perspective of pathophysiology, clinical classification, diagnosis, and management. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive-qualitative approach, reported pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy options. Based on the search, all articles that met the inclusion criteria were narrative reviews, consensus studies, and case reports. These articles outlined the complexities of Diabetic Neuropathy diagnosis, evolving pathophysiological theories, and therapeutic approaches. A multidisciplinary diagnostic approach that includes a thorough history, neurological clinical examination, and ancillary tests (e.g., HbA1c, MRI) is essential. Management involves pharmacological therapy (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentinoid), non-pharmacological therapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, nerve blocks), and comprehensive oral health management. Interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, neurologists, and endocrinologists is essential for optimal patient care. Further research is needed to understand the detailed mechanisms and develop more effective therapies
