Abstract

Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the tubers or roots that is widely grown in Indonesia that contain high antioxidants. One type of flavonoid that functions as an antioxidant is a natural dye called anthocyanin. In the process of extraction of anthocyanin, the solvent has an important role. In this research, the deep eutectic solvent was used because it is more economical and environmentally friendly. This research will optimize the microwave assisted extraction of anthocyanin content in purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) using a deep eutectic solvent with the variation of material to solvent ratio, microwave power, and extraction time. Optimization is done by using the statistical method Response Surface Method (RSM) with Total Anthocyanin content as a response. The optimum operating conditions for the extraction of anthocyanins from purple sweet potato using the deep eutectic solvent were obtained at a solid to solvent ratio of 1:29 at a microwave power of 270 watts for 193 s, with an optimum TAC value of 311.64 mg/L and an antioxidant value of 44.85%. The use of DES can increase the extraction yield and is environmentally friendly.

Abstract

Natural dyes are alternatives to synthetic dyes as batik dyes. However, color results produced by natural dyes were not as good as synthetic dyes, hence mordant compounds were required. As a substitute for metal mordant, it was essential to have another alternative mordant, such as chitosan. This research was intended to analyze the color produced by various sources of natural dyes, betel nut; spurred mangrove (tingi) bark; baheda (jolawe) peel; mangrove bark; mahogany bark; and copperpod (jambal) bark, quantitatively by testing the value of color differences (ΔE) on variations of  the chitosan concentration and fabric dyeing. In conclusion, the use of chitosan could enhance the absorption of dye into the fabric. In a chitosan concentration of  10 g/L, betel nut reached an  ΔE value of 15.40; spurred mangrove 16.26; baheda peel 18.97; mangrove 10.87; mahogany 14.01; and copperpod 19.33. Furthermore, the test of fastness to sunlight with greyscale showed the value in range of 4-5 (good).

Abstract

Yogyakarta is one of the largest batik-producing cities in Indonesia. It has a positive impact on the artisans's economy. It adds new jobs, but this has yet to be matched by the skills and knowledge of the artisans in managing liquid waste generated from batik activities. So far, liquid batik waste has been stored in holding tanks and allowed to seep into the ground or even directly thrown into the water without further processing. So, it harms the environment, such as pollution of the waters and the surrounding environment and even the death of aquatic biota. Therefore, a renewable technological innovation was created, combined with the Heterogeneous Fenton method as a medium for processing batik waste. The methods used include pre-test, lecture, question and answer and post-test. Based on service activities that have been carried out, including providing information on equipment technology of batik waste processing to batik artisans in Desai Iroyudan, Guwosari Village, Pajangan District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, it is known that the level of community understanding has become 98% or increased by 23%.

Abstract

Abstract

The batik industry is one that continues to develop over time. One of the ongoing concerns is the waste generated by the batik industry, particularly the dye content in batik dyes. Reactive dyes, if not processed properly, can have a very negative impact on the environment. They can pollute water sources, harm the surrounding environment, and even kill aquatic biota. Currently, liquid batik waste is stored in holding tanks and allowed to seep into the ground without further processing. Given the environmental impact of batik dyes, efforts must be made to minimize these effects before the waste is discharged into water bodies. A batik waste processing method currently under development is the Heterogeneous Fenton method. This method can degrade batik waste into compounds that are less harmful to the environment. The implementation of this service involves socialization and introduction of the program to the service partners, as well as training. This includes technology introduction, tool usage, and the transfer of scientific and technological knowledge to the service partners.
