Abstract

Abstract

Natural dyes are alternatives to synthetic dyes as batik dyes. However, color results produced by natural dyes were not as good as synthetic dyes, hence mordant compounds were required. As a substitute for metal mordant, it was essential to have another alternative mordant, such as chitosan. This research was intended to analyze the color produced by various sources of natural dyes, betel nut; spurred mangrove (tingi) bark; baheda (jolawe) peel; mangrove bark; mahogany bark; and copperpod (jambal) bark, quantitatively by testing the value of color differences (ΔE) on variations of  the chitosan concentration and fabric dyeing. In conclusion, the use of chitosan could enhance the absorption of dye into the fabric. In a chitosan concentration of  10 g/L, betel nut reached an  ΔE value of 15.40; spurred mangrove 16.26; baheda peel 18.97; mangrove 10.87; mahogany 14.01; and copperpod 19.33. Furthermore, the test of fastness to sunlight with greyscale showed the value in range of 4-5 (good).

Abstract

The strategic plan for the development of the Semaki area is to develop regional-based economic, social and cultural communities with various training programs. One of which is handmade batik craftsmen who is in UKM Balai Agung Cendana Batik Tulis. The problems are high production costs and the length of production time in making batik. The purpose is to increase the knowledge and capacity of partners in producing batik with natural dyes by introducing natural dyeing technology so as to reduce the stages of the process so as to reduce production costs. Methods and approaches in implementing this activity are counseling and training. Community service activities at Balai Agung Cendana Batik Tulis were able to increase participants' knowledge in drawing motifs, wax painting, dyeing processes, and pre-mordanting with chitosan up to 100%. The batik training provided to the community was also able to improve the community's skills in drawing and painting batik up to 92% and the skills of dyeing fabrics with natural dyes and chitosan mordanting up to 98%.

Abstract

Community-based waste banks play a crucial role in promoting sustainable waste management and local economic empowerment. The “Restu Ibu” waste bank in Sambilegi, Sleman Regency, faces challenges related to limited product innovation, human resource capacity, and economic aspects, particularly product pricing and commercialization. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the technical skills and pricing determination capabilities of female waste bank members through applied chemical innovation and economic capacity building. The program employed offline counseling and hands-on training focused on producing liquid compost fertilizer from household organic waste using simple batch reactors made from locally available materials. Program effectiveness was evaluated through post-test assessments, participant interaction, interviews, and reviews of financial records. The results showed a 100% increase in participants’ knowledge of liquid compost production and reactor concepts, with comprehension levels improving from low (scores 1–2) to high (scores 3–4) among 88% of participants. Active engagement during training further indicated effective knowledge transfer. Overall, the program strengthened individual and institutional capacity, supported sustainable organic waste valorization, and enhanced the potential of the waste bank to contribute to local economic development and tourism-oriented community initiatives.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) producing tofu play an important role in the national economy, but most of them have not properly managed their production waste, which has the potential to cause environmental pollution. This community service activity aims to implement a simple, effective, and sustainable tofu liquid waste treatment technology, as well as to enhance the human resource capacity of MSME partners in Yogyakarta to manage waste independently. The methods used include observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and the implementation of four outreach sub-activities: (1) the hazards of tofu waste content, (2) wastewater quality standards, (3) wastewater treatment methods, and (4) Internet of Things (IoT)-based waste treatment technology. The results of the activity show that more than 80% of the partners have been educated about the dangers of waste, understand the correct treatment methods, and are able to use IoT technology to monitor waste parameters in real-time via smartphones. The impact of this community service is an increase in partners' awareness of environmental responsibility and their readiness to implement sustainable waste treatment technology.

Abstract

The batik industry faces challenges due to the shift toward synthetic dyes, which negatively impact the environment. While natural dyes derived from Bixa orellana seeds are eco-friendly, they typically exhibit low color strength. This study aimed to enhance natural dye uptake by modifying the surface of cotton fabric using chitosan as a biomordant. Cotton fabrics underwent pre-mordanting with chitosan (at concentrations of 1, 1.5, and 2.5 g/L), followed by dyeing with Bixa orellana extract and fixation with alum. Color strength was analyzed using a spectrophotometer to determine K/S values. Dyeing with Bixa orellana seeds yielded colors ranging from yellow to orange; higher chitosan concentrations resulted in a deeper orange hue. The results showed an increase in color strength from 1.436 (without chitosan treatment) to 4.153 (at a concentration of 2.5 g/L), representing a 188% increase in color intensity. Ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the chitosan, fabric, and dye enhanced color affinity. Chitosan proved effective as a biomordant—with an optimal concentration of 2.5 g/L—thereby supporting a more sustainable natural dyeing process in batik production.
