Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem, which is currently still an important problem in Indonesia. Chronic malnutrition also has an impact on dental and oral health, such as causing disturbances in the development of salivary glands and can affect the eruption time of milk teeth, which can increase the risk of dental caries. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of consuming river water as drinking water on caries in stunted children in Sungai Tuan Ilir Village, Banjar Regency. This research is an analytical survey with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of elementary school children from the Sungai Tuan Ilir Village area in Banjar Regency. The sampling method used was total sampling, involving 95 children. The results of the research using the Chi-Square Tests obtained a Sig value. (2-tailed) = 0.000, so there is a relationship between drinking water consumption and dental caries in stunted children. The conclusion drawn from this study is that there is a significant relationship between water consumption and caries in stunted children in Sungai Tuan Ilir Village, Banjar Regency. It is recommended that promotive and preventive efforts need to be increased from pregnant women to toddlers regarding stunting and the importance of maintaining healthy teeth as early as possible.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of morbidity around the world. Between 1990 and 2019, the number of people with hypertension doubled, rising from 650 million to 1.3 billion. Hypertension is defined as high blood pressure with a systolic pressure higher than 140 mmHg and a diastolic pressure higher than 90 mmHg on both measurements taken at a five-minute interval during a period of sufficient rest or calm. Stress is the leading cause of hypertension because it increases cortisol output by the adrenal glands, which leads to hypertension. This study is a literature review which includes completing a journal review applying comparative research methods. The results indicate that there is a link. Cortisol levels and stress levels are linked in hypertensive patients because when stressed, the body releases more stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol), which activates the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System (RAAS), causing blood pressure increase..

Abstract

Based on International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data, an estimated 463 million people aged 20–79 worldwide were living with diabetes in 2019, with projections rising to 578 million by 2030 and 700 million by 2045. Indonesia ranks seventh among the ten countries with the highest number of diabetes cases, totaling 10.7 million people. Banjarbaru City is one of the regions in South Kalimantan with the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Inadequate management of DM can result in both acute and chronic complications, including cardiovascular disorders, peripheral neuropathy, and diabetic foot. One non-pharmacological approach to reducing blood glucose levels is through physical activity, such as the Diabetes Foot Exercise (Senam Kaki Diabetes) and Diabetes Exercise (Senam Diabetes), which aim to improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and enhance glucose metabolism. This community service project aimed to improve knowledge, skills, and self-reliance among Prolanis patients with type 2 DM in applying combined foot and diabetes exercises as an alternative method to lower blood glucose levels and prevent complications. A cross-sectional analytic observational method was applied, with the population comprising 20 Prolanis patients selected using total sampling. Initial blood glucose tests (pretest) showed that 16 participants had hyperglycemia, while 4 were within normal limits. The intervention included education on DM complications and prevention, followed by the practice of combined foot and diabetes exercises. Post-intervention (posttest) results indicated a decrease in blood glucose levels in all participants, although 50% remained in the hyperglycemia category. The targeted goal was achieved, with improvements in both blood glucose control and patient knowledge. It is recommended that healthcare workers and community health cadres continue promoting and supervising the regular practice of these exercises to maintain quality of life and reduce the risk of complications in type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), 61.9% of Indonesians aged 55–64 years and 54.2% aged over 65 years experienced dental and oral health problems, while in South Kalimantan the prevalence reached 59%. Among children aged 10–14 years, only 2.1% brushed their teeth properly, and overall only 8.1% of Indonesians practiced correct and timely toothbrushing habits. Poor oral hygiene is strongly influenced by behavioral factors, particularly the lack of awareness regarding the importance of maintaining dental and oral health. This community service project was conducted at SDN Tambak Raya Martapura, targeting 47 elementary school students from grades I to VI, with the aim of improving oral hygiene through promotive and preventive approaches. A total sampling technique was applied, and interventions included mass toothbrushing, health education, and the application of disclosing solution to detect dental plaque as an indicator of oral hygiene. Initial examinations showed that the majority of students had moderate levels of oral hygiene. After the intervention, follow-up examinations demonstrated significant improvements, with 32 students (76%) achieving good oral hygiene, while 10 students (24%) remained in the moderate category. No students were found in the poor category. The targeted outcomes were successfully achieved, indicating that the combination of mass toothbrushing and disclosing solution application was effective in promoting oral health. It is recommended that schools, parents, and health workers continue to integrate these activities regularly to improve children’s oral hygiene and prevent future dental health problems.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, incurable disease associated with a reduced life expectancy of approximately 10 years due to cardiovascular complications such as ischemic heart disease and stroke. According to the International Diabetes Federation and WHO, the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia is projected to rise from 8.4 million in 2000 to 21.3 million in 2030. Data from the 2018 National Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) indicated an increase in prevalence from 6.9% in 2013 to 8.5% in 2018, with higher rates in urban (2.0%) compared to rural (1.0%) areas, and the highest prevalence observed up to the age of 65. South Kalimantan ranks second nationally in periodontal disease prevalence, which is significantly associated with diabetes. If left untreated, periodontal disease in diabetic patients may lead to severe infection and even death. This study aimed to analyze factors influencing blood glucose levels and periodontal disease in patients with diabetes mellitus. It employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 30 diabetic respondents. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between stress level (p = 0.013) and periodontal disease (p = 0.004) with blood glucose levels (p < 0.05). The study concludes that stress level and periodontal disease are significantly related to blood glucose control in diabetic patients. It is recommended to provide greater attention through curative efforts, including non-pharmacological therapies such as relaxation techniques, diabetes exercise programs, and proper tooth-brushing education for patients with diabetes mellitus.
