Abstract

Increasing awareness of oral health among students at Pondok Pesantren Asy-Syujaa’iyyah in Cintaratu Village, Pangandaran, is essential for supporting sustainable tourism development. Children from farming families and local business owners often have limited access to dental services, leading to common issues such as cavities and gum problems. This community service initiative aims to enhance students' understanding of the importance of oral health through education and free dental check-ups. The program involved 111 students, 63.1% of whom were female, and 72% were under the age of 15. Interactive education was delivered through group discussions, which effectively increased participants’ knowledge of proper dental hygiene and the importance of a healthy diet. The results of the dental check-ups revealed that 41% of students had cavities, with some reporting pain. These findings underscore the need for ongoing education and regular check-ups to prevent more serious dental health issues. This program not only raises awareness of proper dental care but also fosters a generation that is more conscious of their oral health. This, in turn, supports sustainable tourism in Pangandaran, where improved public health can enhance the region’s appeal and create a more welcoming environment for both tourists and local communities.

Abstract

Abstract

Tantangan utama meliputi keterbatasan fasilitas sanitasi. Kata Kunci: Keperawatan Komunitas, Perilaku Hidup Bersih Dan Sehat (PHBS), Pesantren Sehat   ABSTRACT Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) is a critical step in improving individual and community health, particularly in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), which involve high levels of interaction among students (santri). Pesantren Asy Syujaa’iyyah in Pangandaran Regency faces sanitation challenges, such as a lack of handwashing facilities and waste management systems. These conditions pose risks to the health of students and the environment. Therefore, the implementation of PHBS based on a community nursing approach is essential to creating a healthy environment that supports character development among students. This study aims to enhance the understanding and application of PHBS through community nursing-based education. This community service activity was conducted on September 14, 2024, involving 111 students. A nursing approach was implemented through counseling based on PHBS indicators from the Ministry of Health and pre-post questionnaires. Counseling was carried out in small groups to improve communication effectiveness and empowerment. Data were analyzed descriptively to evaluate the improvement in understanding and application of PHBS. Post-counseling, there was a significant increase in students’ understanding of PHBS, particularly in handwashing, environmental sanitation, and waste management. Prior to the activity, most students only understood personal hygiene, but afterward, they recognized the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness and collective sanitation. The main challenges included limited sanitation facilities. The community nursing approach proved effective in improving the understanding and application of PHBS. Nursing-based counseling prioritized education, empowerment, and advocacy. This aligns with community-based health promotion models involving active participation from students and pesantren caregivers. For sustainability, cross-sector collaboration is necessary, such as with healthcare workers and government agencies, to provide adequate sanitation facilities. The implementation of PHBS in Pesantren Asy Syujaa’iyyah with a community nursing approach has succeeded in increasing students’ awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Support from facilities and cross-sector collaboration as well as regular evaluation are needed to ensure the sustainability of the program and ensure its effectiveness. Keywords: Community Nursing, Clean and Healthy Life Behavior, Healthy Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

Fishermen are a population at high risk for hypertension due to heavy physical activity, high sodium dietary patterns, and limited access to healthcare services. Bojongsalawe is a coastal hamlet located in Parigi, Pangandaran, where the majority of the residents work as fishermen. This community service activity aimed to conduct blood pressure screening and provide health education about hypertension risk of fishermen in Bojongsalawe Hamlet. The methods used included direct blood pressure measurement and health counseling following the screening. A total of 20 fishermen participated in the activity. The screening results showed that one person had hypertension, while the other 19 had normal blood pressure. The participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the activity. The education provided covered understanding of risk factors, signs and symptoms, hypertension complications, and prevention strategies. Subjective evaluation results indicated that this activity was effective in increasing early awareness of hypertension and the importance of early detection among fishermen. Simple screening activities accompanied by health education can serve as promotive and preventive efforts that are beneficial in controlling hypertension in coastal communities, particularly among fishermen.
