Abstract

The purpose of this study is that students are involved in learning reading comprehension through small group strategies in class reading and to find out students' perceptions of learning reading comprehension through small group strategies. This research is a qualitative descriptive design with a case study method. Participants in this study were all students of class VII A SMPN 5 Karawang, and 5 students were interviewed. The data collection technique that the authors use is observation to observe student behavior during learning to read comprehension using small group techniques. In addition, the writer also uses semi-structured interviews to find out students' perspectives in learning reading comprehension using small groups. The data that has been obtained is analyzed using a qualitative technique proposed by Miles & Huberman. The analysis consists of three activity flows, namely: data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions/verification. The results showed that students find it helpful to learn reading comprehension with small group strategies because they collaborate with their group mates.

Abstract

Reading comprehension challenges the students’ understanding the meaning of the text. This study aim to exploring students’ behavioral engagement through KWL strategy in reading comprehension. The research method used in this study is descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. This research was conducted with limited to 4 students at eighth grade. The results showed that the KWL strategy gives students a better reading experience by enabling them to understand English text more quickly. The KWL strategy can make students more focused in learning reading comprehension. The KWL technique can also has encouraged students’ participation to learn more actively in analyzing the reading comprehension with peers and teacher. Finally, the KWL strategy can give teaching that builds students’ enthusiasm for developing their ability to reading comprehension; almost all students feel this enthusiasm after implementing the KWL strategy. This research suggest that teachers should expand or develop their teaching strategies to produce better learning experiences.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to open the insight of a senior EFL teacher toward the strategies that commonly use during reading teaching. Using narrative inquiry design, the result of this study would be in narrative form. The participant that chosen in this study is an EFL teacher with 25 years experiences. After collecting the data by interview, the researcher found the result that shows the mostly use strategies are Lecture and Direct Reading Activity. These two strategies come with it advantages and disadvantages. But, these two strategies consider the most effective and efficient to apply in the classroom.

Abstract

In the context of teaching language, a suitable teaching approach in the classroom affects teaching reading to language learners to be successful. The extensive reading can be used as an alternative approach to teach reading which provides many advantages for language learners specially to foster their reading skills. Many researchers have been conducted the extensive reading study, however, the majority of existing studies about the solution to teach language using extensive reading does not appear to be helpful to find students’ preference from the component of extensive reading. Therefore, this present qualitative study attempts to explore students’ preferences in the component of extensive reading. The findings present that the highest students' preference from the component of extensive reading is easy reading. Meanwhile, the smallest students’ preference from the component of extensive reading is about teacher orientation & guide. A future researcher is suggested to study extensive reading in other aspects besides exploring students' preference to increase the quality of next extensive reading implication to be better.

Abstract

Speaking is one of four crucial skills in English language learning. The pupils communicate and share their thoughts by language in their everyday life. They use language to make an order, to communicate with others, to express their emotions, thoughts and ideas. Speaking is one of the subjects in an English Education Department, the researcher inspired to evaluate whether the debating method increase the student’s speaking skill or not, especially during the outbreak of the corona virus. As the impact of this virus matter, education is one of some fields got impacted, so schools and universities are closed for more than a year. The new way of teaching learning could be a challenge for both students and instructors. Moreover, there is a need to know on how the students’ perception toward the teaching learning process via video conference, was it feel the same. However, this paper investigates the EFL students’ perception of speaking courses through the debating process during the pandemic. This study employing qualitative narrative inquiry. The data gathered from some the experiences of three Indonesian EFL students in university. The author was done collected the data conducted a semi-structured interview using a call through messages application. The study found that the participants’ perceptions toward speaking course conducted via video conference encourage their critical thinking, their team-work, students’ social skill and their interest towards the subject. It seems that the debate technique is impacted the students positively by promoting their critical thinking, social skill, team work and students’ satisfaction towards the subject.

Abstract

Currently, students are asked to be able to understand literacy in reading. However, to understand literacy, of course, it has to go through the right strategy especially to beginner reader students. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategy of students in reading English text through perspective from automatic information processing (AIP) in reading. The method for this study used interviews and observations of one participant conducted in the second-level high school. This study also uses descriptive case study as research design. This study shows 5 things that should be reviewed in reading English text, namely attention, decoding, comprehension, switching in reading and automaticity. However, the five things found in this study are still rarely noticed. Therefore, this study also aims to allow educators and students to know what steps to do as a strategy to be able to read and understand the text of reading in English especially for beginner reader.

Abstract

Social networking apps have emerged as potentially useful new tools for improving second language vocabulary acquisition. The current research compares the growth of academic vocabulary knowledge in English. The purpose of this study is to compare the perspectives or views of the Department of English Education at Singaperbangsa Karawang University (UNSIKA). Online learning conducted during the Covid-19 Pandemic students using WhatsApp group media to traditional vocabulary instruction methods. The qualitative research method used in this study is a descriptive design with an explanation of the form of narrative related to the views of students in online learning during the pandemic. Data was collected through interviews specially semi structure interview based on interview guideline and data analysis by involving three students in the online learning process. The findings provide information about the learning process as well as the advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp media. The interview results show that students in general have a positive attitude toward learning vocabulary through WhatsApp group media. However, technological limitations, unfamiliar presentation, and learning activities may prevent students from participating in a WhatsApp media lesson.
