Abstract

The new pattern of learning for Indonesian Muslims, preferring references to religious knowledge through digital media, provides opportunities for Salafi groups to propose their religious teaching and movements, such as through Islamic-based websites, to contend in religious discourse. Ultimately, Islam experiences ideological contestation, including the construction of the hijra movement through a socialized understanding of Islamic law. This article explores the discourse of the hijra movement applied Salafism using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, which focuses on text, practice, and socio-cultural analysis. Therefore, the research data includes affiliated online publications and religious practices observed in Salafism religious forums in Bogor, Depok, and Jakarta. The results demonstrated that the hijra movement through digital media has become a strategic arena for the Salafi group in disseminating the Puritan narrative among middle-class Muslims, while Moderatism prioritizes tolerance and pluralism. Salafi group succeeded in captivating these Muslims who preferred to acquire Islamic understanding through online media rather than traditional religious forums to profess Salafism even though of internal conflict within Salafism. This study highlights the need for strengthening digital literacy to investigate ideological interactions across diverse Islamic groups in digital spaces.

Abstract

This article examines changes in campaign patterns and the mobilization of political support through online media. This shift in campaign strategy provides competing political groups with opportunities to innovate in their use of digital media tools. Political contestation necessitates access to alternative information sources beyond mainstream media. However, social media, which allows individuals to autonomously convey political views and calls to action, carries the risk of political vulnerability through hate speech and misinformation. This paper employs a qualitative method, analyzing data through content analysis based on Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis model, which emphasizes textual, practical, and socio-cultural dimensions. The primary sources for this article are documents concerning evolving patterns of presidential election contestation in online media and activities interpreting political contestation. Socio-cultural analysis reveals that the voting public in the presidential election tends to acquire knowledge of diversity through social media rather than direct mobilization, potentially contributing to increased tensions in Indonesia’s political contestation.

Abstract

In AI in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching: Theory and Practice, Marcel Danesi underscores the ramifications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the use of tools like ChatGPT, on Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) and its critical components: language acquisition and teaching. Danesi covers several aspects of FLT to speak, write and assess, voicing their greatest concerns on the impact of AI. Danesi provides a balanced view, considering both the advantages and challenges of dependence on AI in language education. He articulates important ethical arguments on the impact of AI in education, particularly its failure to address students’ emotional and contextual concerns, while highlighting the gap human instructors fill. In addition, the book provides synthesis of the frameworks on the use AI technologies and pedagogical tools to improve FLT while maintaining the human dimension of teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to map the application of language learning strategies based on Rebecca L. Oxford's theory in her book Language Learning Strategies: What Every Teacher Should Know for four primary skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, this study analyzed direct (memory, cognitive, compensatory) and indirect (metacognitive, affective, social) strategies. Data were collected through a literature review and analyzed using the content analysis method based on Klaus Krippendorff's framework. The results showed that memory strategies significantly affected listening and reading skills, cognitive strategies were applied evenly across all skills, while compensatory strategies focused more on speaking skills. Metacognitive and affective strategies are important for learning management, and social strategies support all language skills. The findings guide educators in designing effective teaching methods, particularly in Arabic language learning.
