Abstract

Oral health contributes to individual's physical, mental, and social well-being and significantly impacts their quality of life. Preventing oral diseases and promoting oral health contribute to overall well-being, enhancing their quality of life. Community-level or population-based prevention is the most cost-effective approach with the greatest impact on communities or populations, whether in schools or neighborhoods. Oral health education aims to enhance overall knowledge, potentially leading to the adoption of beneficial oral health behaviors. The provision of oral health education is expected to elevate public knowledge and awareness, enabling individuals to maintain or enhance their oral health and thus improve their quality of life. Offline activities involving oral health education were conducted through presentations on May 7th, 2023, at Giova’s Garden, Bogor. Various topics, including dental radiographic examination, primary management of dental trauma, dental prosthesis rehabilitation, oral health in children, and tips for maintaining oral health while driving, were presented to enhance participants' knowledge about oral health. The community engagement activity proceeded smoothly. Similar activities are anticipated to be carried out again with pre-test and post-test assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the education provided.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the accuracy of diagnosing oral lesions through clinical photos taken by clinical dental students (CDS). Methods: The observational analytic study was conducted on 100 CDS to evaluate 140 clinical photos of oral lesions. The gold standard was evaluated by three oral medicine specialists. Data analysis will be performed using accuracy and kappa tests. Results: The accuracy rate of lesion detection in CDS is high (88.55%) with substantial agreement (κ = 0.66). However, the accuracy rate of diagnosis is low (38.21%) with no agreement (κ = -0.30). Participation in the clinical Oral Medicine module positively influenced detection accuracy, with the highest rate among students who had completed the module (96.18%). However, diagnostic accuracy remained low across all groups. Conclusion: CDS demonstrates good detection abilities but struggles with accurate diagnosis. Participation in the clinical Oral Medicine module is beneficial for improving detection abilities. Further efforts are needed to enhance diagnostic skills and ensure that CDS are well-prepared for clinical practice.

Abstract

The high prevalence of dental caries among elementary school children in Indonesia, reaching 93%, highlights the urgent need for effective dental health education for both students and parents. This community service activity aimed to increase knowledge and awareness about dental health through interactive education at SD Negeri Sukabumi Selatan 01, Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, on April 23, 2025. The target participants were 30 fourth-grade students and 15 parents, selected purposively. The program involved pre-tests, delivery of material using audio-visual media, demonstrations of proper tooth brushing techniques, group discussions, educational games, and post-tests to measure knowledge improvement. The results showed an increase in students’ average knowledge scores from 6.13 to 8.00 and parents’ scores from 7.80 to 8.60 after the intervention. The interactive method proved more effective than conventional lectures, supported by active student participation, parental involvement as role models, and strong support from the school. In conclusion, interactive education based on school-family collaboration significantly improved understanding and fostered healthy behaviors in children. It is recommended that similar activities be conducted regularly with broader parental involvement and strengthened school roles, in order to sustainably reduce dental health problems among children.
