Abstract

Maggie: A Girl of The Street adalah novel yang menggambarkan tentang kemiskinan penduduk New York pada abad 19. Dalam artikel ini, penulis menggunakan theory sosiologi sastra yang akan membandingkan antara kejadian yang benar – benar terjadi dengan  apa yang di temukan  di dalam novel ini. Penulis juga menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi di dalam menganalisa novel. Pendekatan ini merupakan pendekatan extrinsic dari sebuah karya sastra. Pendekatan sosiologi ini di gunakan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana keadaan yang tergambar di dalam novel mempunyai persamaan dengan fakta sebenarnya yang berkaitan dengan kemiskinan serta dampaknya terhadap wanita di daerah kumuh di New York pada abad 19. Selain itu penulis juga mengumpulkan data melalui metode kualitatif kemudian di jabarkan secara deskriptif.  Dari hasil penelitian tersebut, penulis menemukan bahwa Crane dalam novel Maggie: A gril of the streets  menampilkan gambaran dari kemiskinan serta dampaknya terhadap wanita immigran di New York pada abad 19. Setelah menganalisa novel ini terbukti bahwa hidup di bawah garis kemiskinan telah member dampak negative terhadap wanita, yaitu: keinginan yang besar untukmendapatkan pria kaya, ketidakharmonisan hubungan antara ibu dan anak, bekerja sebagia buruh dan prostitusi. Mereka merupkan korban dari kemelaratan, dan harapan untuk keluar dari kemelaratan justru membuat mereka lebih terjerumus kedalam hal yang tidak mereka inginkan. Semua dampak dari kemiskinan itu dapat di temukan dengan jelas dalam novel ini.

Abstract

In designing the course or part of the course such assessments, it is well-established to know the lecturers’ needs as the preliminary study. This study aims to investigate the lecturer’s needs regarding the assessment model for Basic Reading in higher education. The data were collected through interviews with three lecturers. The researchers used purposive sampling to select the participants from a private university in Padang City, West Sumatera, Indonesia. The data from the interview were analyzed qualitatively. It was found that the lecturers perceived that they needed to improve the quality of teaching and learning, especially in assessment. They need to implement an authentic blended assessment model oriented to self-directed learning in Basic Reading subject, because it helps students to be independent.

Abstract

Background: Language has an important position in life because it can change anything just by saying something. A Human being needs language to do interaction. At least every creature in the world has its language. Besides, for a human language is different. Aim: This article concerns a description of things that are felt by the subject of the research relates to Grammar and something such as students' interest to speak the English language. Method: The method in this research is descriptive qualitative with data sources in the document of record. The data collection method used the observation and note method. The researcher used the interview technique of data collection and the researcher used thematic analysis in data analysis. Findings: It is revealed that students used regular and irregular verbs when speaking in class. The interpretation of student's ability on using regular and irregular verbs in speaking is low because the students are not able to use them.
